Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 13, 2012

The logde itself is nice and eco, the food superb, the guides were fine in any situation. No doubt about that. But for single travellers, the rooms meant for couples will get divided into one great with a large window into the wilderness and one without ANY window or ANY furniture. I felt like stuffed into a locker or a monk's cell. That really made a sharp contrast to anything else that intended to be upmarket. Well I was there for the walk and the walk was great so it was no big problem sleeping in a shed. But the person at the other side payed the same price for a really beautiful room. So if you go there, check that in advance and then make your decision. And: if you're expecting a pool, forget it for now and a while.

Thanks for the feedback. Things have changed a little since you walked with us nearly 2 years ago but we appreciate you taking the time to let us know your experience.

Firstly with regards to a pool, I'm sorry you had an expectation of swimming at the lodge. We've never promoted ourselves as having a pool and as an eco lodge reliant on rainwater, we don't see this as in keeping with our philosophy.

There are opportunities to swim on some sections of the walk, weather dependent and also dependent on your swimming abilities.

Secondly, our single rooms. Normally, if you joined a walking tour as a single traveller the choices are to pay a hefty single supplement, if the operator will let you, or to be forced to share a room with another traveller that you don't know.

When building our bothfeet lodge, catering for single travellers and those who wanted a single room was really important to us. We worked very hard with our architect to be able to find a way of offering a single room, with share access to an internal bathroom between two people without having to pay a single supplement for the privacy. The solution? To invent an innovative folding room divider that separates our king rooms in half.

This makes two rooms that are identical in almost every way. Yes, one has an outlook to the garden, but the other does have a glass door that measures 1,2m wide by 1,8m high that lets in natural light as well as a skylight for light and privacy. Since you travelled we have also added extra furniture and unique artwork to the rooms to make the rooms feel more homely.

Single rooms are always optional. Walkers can of course choose to be matched with someone of the same gender on a twin share basis for the duration of their walk.

First up, Ha's food was simply amazing and this made the overall experience not just very good, but excellent.

bothfeet were very flexible with our booking and we were therefore happy to accommodate a late change to our tour dates from their end. The lodge and rooms are cosy, well laid out and tranquil. Feels like a real escape. No bells and whistles, but luxury at the same time. Sometimes less is more.

The guided walks were very well organised and our guide was professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Gavin (one of the owners) was also present during our entire stay and made sure we were well looked after.

Attention to detail is evident throughout; from pre-arrival information pack through to the warm drink and delicious homemade slices at the end of each day's walk.

We also enjoyed the company of an interesting mix of fellow travellers, particularly the dinner table discussions!

Having walked the first half of the trail on this first visit, we have subsequently booked to do the second half later this year.

Room Tip: For the most private room, see if the end bush room is available.

As other reviewers have said, it is a great hiking lodge and Ha's food is sublime - although not sure how much longer he will be there as he is being poached from both Vietnam and Bali!
We didn't have a very happy experience however as my husband injured his knee about 3 months out and despite emailing immediately it happened, we were refused a refund or even a deferral to next season and advised we HAD to use our deposit THIS season (even though management was told there was NO WAY the knee would be OK by then) and so felt we were more or less coerced into using it as an accomodation-only option - to explore the area at the end of the season - and the weather was terrible. For what we got, it was horrendously expensive ($310 per PERSON, per night, and it would have been cheaper and more comfortable to stay at a five star in Melbourne or any of the up-market accomodation options along the Great Ocean Road! Gavin was not present at any time during our stay and really gave the impression that he could not have cared less except to try and induce us to return by offering a 25 % discount on our next visiit - which does not even reduce the cost to that of nearby accomodation options!

Thanks for the feedback. It is true - take the walking out of a walking lodge and the experience is never going to be the same. We would liken it to paying to go into a water theme park when you're not able to swim. Your feedback confirmed we are doing the right thing next season: we won't be offering pure lodge stays from now on, just what we know: great full service packages that support hikers on the Great Ocean Walk.
Perhaps there was some confusion when talking with our staff. As a seasonal business, all our team take the winter off, holidaying in places like Vietnam, Bali and other parts of Australia. We're delighted to say they will be back, including our chef Ha, in September to help more visitors discover the trail. Thanks again and we hope your husband's knee recovers well in the coming months.

From the moment we were met at the airport by Gavin we knew we were going to get the type of 'hospitable' attention we were looking for...After a month in Australia with our 24 year old daughter, this was the perfect way to end the trip, just wish we could have spent more time doing the entire 6 day walk rather than just 2. The food provided by 'Ha' was fantastic..the guides lead by Marie informative...all in all a wonderful experience that can not be described with words....A 'must do' experience if you plan to actually 'see' the wonders of Australia and enjoy hiking. I would recommend the guided portion to learn more about the area..you can still go at your own pace while garnering valuable information. If you liked the Routeburn' in NZ...you will love this experience! We will be back to do the entire 6 days!

We chose Bothfeet as a way to do the Great Ocean Walk self-guided by comparing Internet sites. We are confident we made the right choice. The operators (Gavin, with Kate driving and Ha cooking while we were there) really have it all together.
Food was excellent. Foot spas were a nice feature at the end of each day's walk..
Self-guided walkers have to fit in with the recommended walk each day because drop-offs and pick-ups are necessarily coordinated, but there was no problem with that. The lodge is very small - you'll get to know the other guests.
Minor quibble is that bed linen consisted of a doona and we'd have preferred a lighter blanket.
Highly recommended.
