“There are good rooms and there are bad rooms”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2013

This is a strange hostel. There are 7 motel-like rooms which act as dorms or en suite doubles/twins. Each of these has bunk beds, sometimes a double bed, lockers, table and chairs, heater and a bathroom with loo, basin and shower. They are good rooms, nice and light, with a large window giving a view of the bay.
Rooms 8 & 9 are different and not nice. They share a bathroom - loo, shower, basin - have no light as the only window is onto a dark corridor. And they have no heating. If you book an double/twin/family room with shared facilities then you will get of these dreadful rooms.
So, if you are in rooms 1 to 7 you get a nice experience, if you are in rooms 8 or 9 then ask to move because it is not going to be a nice experience.
There is a small common lounge with a few chairs, a TV and some computers. There is a small kitchen, well equipped but with just one 4 ring cooker and an oven. There is one sink, one fridge and a microwave. There is seating for up to 12. The YHA say this hostel sleeps 48. There is some outdoor seating, too, but the common areas surely cannot cope when this hostel is full!
Overall, this hostel feels unloved but if it is quiet and you get moved out of room 8 and into room 4, as we did, then it is OK.

We stayed here 1 night in July 2013 after the short flight from Adelaide to Kangaroo island and hired ad car at the airport. Penneshaw is a very pretty little town with character of its own. The hostel was very quiet the night we arrived but the kitchen was clean and tidy and the common room area cosy. Rooms were fine and comfortable.

Great clean and trusting hostel! Close to the beach and shop/pub etc.

No deposits for towels, crockery etc.

Libby was very helpful with advice on what to do and where to eat and always enquiring about our day.

Penneshaw is very quiet in April!

I and my wife stayed here for 2 nights as part of 3D2N Kangaroo Island Highlights Day Tour package by SeaLink. We topped up the package for the private dormitory with ensuite i.e. we have the whole bunk to ourselves with our own bathroom. Basically it’s a no frills accommodation, but to us, it was good enough considering the price we paid for the package. Bath towels and bed linen was provided, but for ladies with long locks, note that there are no hair dryers in your bunk to blow dry (It’s afterall a dormitory). Room was also clean and very spacious in fact. There is also a self-contained common kitchen for your cooking and dining needs.

The dormitory host lady was very friendly and provided us with information readily. As for the location, it is very good as it’s just a 5 min walk from the jetty, thus right after we disembarked from the ship, we just walked over to YHA while some of the other ship passengers proceeded to take shuttle buses to other accommodations. It’s also a stone’s throw away from the Penguin Center, which to our disappointment, it was closed in the month of Feb since the penguins are all out at sea feeding.

On the whole, I would give YHA Kangaroo Island the thumbs up. If you are travelling as a couple, you may wish to consider topping up for the private dormitory. A great place!!

The hostel is in a former motel, conventiently located (be aware that there's no public transport on kangaroo island). The service was nice, also the design o the common areas. A big con was the roomthougj. We askes for a twin room. What we got (for much more than two bess in a dorm), was a room hadly any larger than the bed that stood in there. This might even have been ok, but in the middle of the night, we discovered beg buga which was the very end of us feeling comfortable!

100m from the ferry terminal this 1960s style building is superbly located for Penneshaw and exploring the island. Clean and comfy dorm style rooms with en-suite we shared 1 room with two friends yet it could easily have slept 8 people.
Close to the Penguin Center, Beach and a playground and 10 minutes walk to a supermarket, the local pub with Bottle shop and Penguin Cafe where I recommend you visit for breakfast.
Having stayed in a number of hostels around the world I can safely say this is one of the best. Don't expect any modcons but comfort and a good bed for the night before you set of exploring the Island and its wildlife.

Nice and close to the Sealink Ferry, all seemed clean and tidy, Kitchen good for a backpackers, and only a short walk to an excellent beach. Hotel, Cafe and takeaway close by but don't expect too much night life.
