Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge
Ranked #1 of 2 Hotels in American River
Reviewed October 24, 2006

For our long-dreamed-of trip to Oz, we wanted to experience something outside the norm and selected Kangaroo Island, SA as one of our four points of travel. Reviews and information about the Island were scattered and the best information we could get led us to KI Lodge in the village of American River.

All I can say is "Totally Outstanding!" Our 2 teenagers, who hate everything (if you have teen's you can relate) were in awe and of all the places in Oz we visited (the Outback,Cairns & Barrier Reef, Sydney and Adelaide), KI Lodge is the only place they want to go back to!

The room was spotlessly clean and spacious, and offered a full kitchen, huge bathroom, full balcony, beds for us all, & better-than-expected tv reception. The reception/lobby area holds a great library, board games, a fireplace and lounging couches. When our few days were drawing to a close in American River, our family was a bit apprehensive when we discoved we had to check out of KI Lodge at 10 am but our bus to the ferry wouldn't collect us until 6 that evening. Even while we had to relenquish our room, our hosts at KI Lodge made us comfortable, even after we had paid our tab (find that anywhere else!) by setting us up in their huge conference room with access to a big-screen tv, cable and internet access, private bathrooms and bar service while we awaited the transport back to the ferry that evening.

The restaurant, open for dinner and when we were there, by reservation only, was 4 star calibre. The breakfast buffet was great - visitors have to try the yogurt, house-made granola and the island honey. We are not novice travellers and simply could not believe we were getting this quality of service, food and lodging in a place so far removed from cosmopolitan cities.

While it was a bit chilly for swimming, the pool is clean and inviting. I'd love to be there when the outdoor patio is in full swing!

The hotel staff arranged our travel excursions to Seal Bay and the national park. No need to worry about missing any link -our KI Lodge manager made sure we made all of our connections and handed us off to our Island Guide. By the way, the Island tour guide, Les, knows everything about the Island - being an KI resident since the '50's - and if you ride his bus, be ready to sing "Waltzing Matilda". Just don't be late getting back on the bus at the tour stops - it's not fun seeing him get pi**ed off!

While I have nothing but kudos for KI Lodge , I still believe the best testimonial that can be given to anyplace, anytime, anywhere is from a teenager who says " Kangaroo Island was the best part of our family vacation to Australia". It doesn't get any better than that.

Hats off to our new friends at Kangaroo Island Lodge and thank you all for making this the trip of a lifetime!

We spent 2 nights in Kangaroo Island that, apart from the millions flies, we enjoyed very much.
The KI Logde is a bit old-fashioned, and you feel to be back 30 years.
We got a sea view room and it had a nice view.
The furnishing and everything was old style, but we always kept in mind to be in a special place that matches the special environment.
Like the other reviewers, I have to confirm that American River is a very samll village quite isolated, but the car is highly recommended anyhow. And for us it was not a big trouble to drive around the island, if not for the great deal of dead animals along the street dazzled at night.
Breakfast and dinner were good, just the service a bit slow, but we were not in a hurry.
The swimming pool was actually too cold for enjoying it.
Please don't forget to make a walk at night to the near field, it is lighted only by the moon, you will see a wonderful starry sky and many small eyes around browsing on the grass (from the height you can easily recognize wallabies, kangaroos, wombats...)
Recommendation: don't miss the Koala walk, you can admire wild koalas in their environment and if you really lucky, you can spot them awake, as they use to sleep something like 19 hours a day.

The hotel rooms were pretty much standard fare - comfortable, but not overly luxurious. I agree with a previous reviewer that the hotel and American River are quite isolated from most of the activities and sights on Kangarooo Island and you will need to drive quite a distance to get to nice beaches or shopping. American River is actually only a few houses and a post office at the end of a 10km road.

By the end of a day of beachgoing, you probably will not want to drive the 30 minutes or more to Kingscote for dinner so be prepared to eat at the hotel restaurant. It is a bit pricey, but the quality is good. Breakfast is also expensive (AU$15) for a cold buffet and AU$5 more for cooked (eggs, etc.). That said, the staff were very pleasant, the location nice and quiet. We probably would look into a hotel nearer to beaches or other actvities, probably in or close to Kingscote if (when?) we go back.

I was very surprised how few people there seemed to be everywhere we went on the island, even though it was peak holiday time. It's a beautiful place and I would recommend at least four days+ to explore.

I recently stayed at this property for 4 nights. I had a poolview room which also overlooks the bay, so I wouldn't bother paying the extra for a Bayview Room. The room (#20) had a queen sized bed and a day bed, table & 2 chair, TV (4 channels, no in-room movies), kitchenette (fridge, sink, tea/coffee facilities). The bathroom was a bit cramped...the shower was huge and I suspect is used for people with disabilities, however, the actually shower head was one of those hand-held jobs. The toilet was very much in the way and there was very little room to dry off. The water would alternate between hot and cold and the water pressure was not that great. The on-site restaurant/bar was large and divided into 2 sections - upper level near the bar was dedicated to breakfast, the lower level being for dinner. The continental breakfast consisted of cereals, fresh fruits, yoghurt, breads, juices and tea/coffee. There was a hot breakfast for more $$. The dinners were good but I found them to be a bit on the expensive side. Main courses averaged at about $26.00 - $30.00. I actually ordered off the children's menu ($10.00) and still received and adult sized meal. The waiting staff in the restaurant were excellent. Despite a lovely and quiet location, this property (and American River) is a little isolated. There is a general store about a 10 minute walk down the road from the hotel, but there aren't really any other eateries nearby, so either be prepared to pay the restaurant prices or maybe eat in Kingscote and then travel back to the hotel.

Kangaroo Island, one of Australia's great wilderness destinations, is best known for its magnificent coastal views, unique landscapes, uncrowded beaches and fascinating wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, Australian sea-lions, New Zealand fur seals and Little penguins. Kangaroo Island is a place of natural beauty and a place to escape. Kangaroo Island Lodge is situated on the banks of Eastern Cove in American River, with all rooms perfectly perched offering exceptional water views over the bay. Amid lush coastal vegetation, Kangaroo Island Lodge blends in with its natural surroundings. There is no better place to unwind and to enjoy the peace and tranquility. The seclusion of this area allows for the abundance of wildlife to roam free. Tammar wallabies, brush tailed possums, black swans, Cape Barren geese, Australian pelicans and the rare and endangered glossy black cockatoos can all be found in here. The outer bay of Eastern Cove offers excellent sailing and fishing in protected waters. The Kangaroo Island oyster industry is also located in American River, with the Oyster Shed located just down the road from the Kangaroo Island Lodge. If you are a keen walker, there are two main walking tracks, the Independence Trail and the Fish Cannery walk. Both walks meander through the natural coastal scrub where numerous species of wildlife and birdlife can be seen. So why not come and escape to the Kangaroo Island Lodge? ... more   less
