The Inn at Willow Grove redefines luxury travel in Virginia, full stop.

As others have noted, the Inn at Willow Grove is a modern facility, albeit one housed in a historic plantation manor house. It distinguishes itself from its competitors that clobber you over the head with period "charm," hunting lodge aesthetics, or cat-themed decor by enveloping its guests in tasteful luxury and gracious service. No lace doilies, no founding fathers chic, no blue and grey.

This is about class: contemporary, top-shelf luxury thoughtfully presented and generously offered.

The Inn is still a bit green, searching somewhat for its core identity, and yet to fire on all cylinders. That will get sorted out as the owners are a strong, guiding presence.

Watch out, though. Once it gets discovered by the DC hipeoisie, it will become the "it" destination in short order.

So, run, don't walk, and say that you were there before it was discovered. You won't regret it.

This is an extraordinarily sophisticated "country inn" with uncommon attention to detail. The property eschews the traditionally cluttered, fussy decors that have come to define even Virginia's more upscale "B&B" destinations. Instead, the destination both surprises and delights visitors by opting for a more internationally inspired ambiance -- all housed within a breathtakingly restored main house and surrounding cottages. That's not to say the decor isn't evocative of the state's Jeffersonian heritage, but only to emphasize that the property's interiors are refreshingly original in many respects with special attention paid to ensuring comfort. Almost forgot the restaurant. In a word, it's excellent in all respects.

A good friend of mine is an art historian who always speaks of bringing the world of art into your own personal existence; that is, of making even minor choices regarding your surroundings deliberate and beautiful. The goal is to live a stylized life, not of mere “high fashion,” but of purposeful grace, beauty and elegance.

Owners David and Charlene and their staff at The Inn at Willow Grove are the absolute personification of my friend’s principle in action. Their efforts made my fiancée’s and my New Years’ at the Inn one of the most luxurious and relaxing times we have ever enjoyed together. We loved our stay enough to easily say that we can’t wait to come back.

We lodged in the colonial era schoolhouse, a detached building lovingly restored with all of today’s luxuries, including a travertine bathroom with heated floors and bubble massage bath, a downstairs area comfortable and elegant and complete with a gas fireplace, and an upstairs bedroom with a bed that you just melt in. The room was absolutely flawless, quite, serene, comfortable and romantic

We enjoyed two breakfasts and one dinner (New Years) at the Inn and all our meals were absolutely stunning examples of the finest cuisine. Furthermore, the evening tea and deserts and breakfast coffee and hot beignets punctuated our experience for the best. You know something is being done right when both you and your loved eat something as seemingly straightforward as an omelet and both of you remark that it is simply the best one that you have ever had.

In fairness, the wait service was a little slow for New Years, but this was an instance where the delay was well worth the wait. The feast was simply fantastic and a fine testament to the culinary skills of Chef Jason Daniels. Watch out, for I wager the world will soon be beating a path to this Chef’s door.

It is a rare exception for me to feel so invested in a place after a stay of just two nights, but that is the nature of the experience that we were provided. It was a pleasure to meet the owners David and Charlene and I wish them every success. They have created something truly wonderful in their Inn and I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to savor it again.

We brought this year's departmental off-site staff meeting to the Inn at Willow Grove. The Inn provided us not only with the lovliest facility imaginable, they also attended to our business needs in the most responsive, discreet and hospitable way possible. We had everything we needed to accommodate our meeting space and AV/electronic requirements, and every creature comfort was attended to... The meals and snacks were excellent! Choosing the Inn at Willow Grove- a place with so much natural and designed beauty- set a creative and supportive tone for a very important meeting. And yet, with all the hospitality and luxury, we didn't spend more than we otherwise do when we "retreat" to a large hotel in a nearby city- our usual course. We will be back as a team, and I'm sure that members of our staff will find their own way back to the Inn at Willow Grove in the meantime. I have!

my wife and i stayed at the inn thanksgiving day and after and were lucky enough to be in the "butler's cottage". the decor, comfort and amenities here were equal to any other similar places we have stayed such as post ranch inn and meadow wood in california. our personal butler, gene, was true gentleman and quite expert on when to engage and when to leave us ample privacy. airport pickup by gene in a porsche sedan was that extra touch only the best places in the world think to offer. the owners, charlene and david are supremely gracious and their taste is exquisite. the comfort of the dining room, with fire pits and fireplaces seemingly everywhere you decided to sit, as well as the delicious menu and preparation made all meals enough to never want/have to leave this property. the bar is one of the most comfortable and luxurious drinking rooms imaginable. this place will not be a secret for long.

We spent our weekend at the completely renovated 1778 grand Inn at Willow Grove. As a world travellers we have been to many places before and this one is over the top and will be for years to come as you can see the commitment from the Inn's owners to transform this historic plantation into a destination. Five stars amenities, amazing decor and surrounding, staff trained with mastery and grace. There was nothing about our trip we did not like. Thank you for Gene our Buttler du Jour for making our visit so memorable. We look forward to our next visit.

What a wonderful treat as a way to celebrate our anniversary! We were warmly greeted and shown around, then taken to our beautifully appointed room in the main Inn building ("Interior" room). The lighting and decor were just beautiful, not only in our room but throughout the entire Inn. We enjoyed a drink in the cozy bar, hors doeuvres in the salon, and had an excellent meal at the restaurant, Vintage. The bar and restaurant were busy all evening, but the service was excellent. When we returned to our room after dinner, there was fresh ice in the ice bucket, along with a tray of tea and cupcakes, which we were too full to even taste. And in the morning, coffee and absolutely sinful fresh hot beignets were delivered to the room, along with the Washington Post. We were very happy to have a room in the main inn on this cold wintry day, but would love to go back and stay in one of the cottages with their own porches when the weather is nicer. We will definitely make a return visit!!
