“Heaven, Romance, and Luxury in Orange, VA”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2012

The Inn at Willow Grove provided the perfect location for our first getaway as husband and wife. I have been lucky in enough to travel all over the world and the Inn at Willow Grove EXCEEDED any hotel/resort/inn I have stayed at in Dubai, Bora Bora, Europe, or anywhere else for that matter. Charlene and David have succeeded transforming a historical location with an intriguing past into a serene oasis without compromising on modern luxuries, such as heated floors, gas fire places, and out door fire pits. The staff including Stephen, Jamie, and Carlos where all exceptional attentive. I lost my voice during out stay and everyone was genuinely concerned offering tea and cough drops, its the little things that count. Jason's food, as other have comment was scrumptious, and we are looking forward to having one of his burgers. In fact, while on first trip to the Inn my husband and I made plans to return in the fall.

Room Tip: Weaver's Cottage was perfect!

From the booking process through check out, every moment of our stay at the Inn at Willow Grove felt like a customized experience. I travel for business about 100+ days a year and just needed a break from the madness of airports and hotel rooms that all look and feel alike. The Inn exceeded my expectations in every way. Every single interaction with the staff team was enjoyable and made my husband and I feel like we were visiting with long time friends. From Jamie the bartender to Carlos the 5 star restaurant manager to Stephen the butler and everyone else, the conversations and recommendations for both in-house and nearby options for food and activities were terrific. The food was so scrumptious that it was difficult to leave the property but we managed to venture out to nearby Gordonsville for fabulous BBQ at the BBQ Exchange where the food was great and the owners/staff and other customers were friendly and helpful to these city-folk. My only challenge was trying to figure out if I was a 'sow' or 'boar' when finding the rest rooms (the price of being a city-girl). We will be back at the Inn again, and again, and again.

My wife and I stayed here for the first time in late March. The Trip Advisor reviews created expectations that I feared could not possibly be met. I am pleased to say that my fears were misplaced. The Butler's Cottage was sublime, the service was terrific (including Steven's recommendations for touring the area), the grounds were lovely (the firepits were a nice touch), and dinner and brunch the following morning were excellent. I can only echo the earlier reviews. If you want to combine a historical setting without having to forgo modern conveniences (flat screens, heated floors, gas fireplaces), this is the place. It is not cheap -- but, happily, at this lovely inn, we did get what we paid for. We look forward to returning.

My wife and I had a wonderful weekend stay here and hope to go back again. So many luxury ameneities on top of a meticulously detailed property. The butler service puts this place over the top, and on par with 5 diamond resorts we have stayed at.

Room Tip: You can't go wrong with any room or cottage here.

We've been compared to many exceptional five star and five diamond resorts in the past, but shangri-la is the best compliment of all! We're so pleased that you enjoyed your getaway here, and we look forward to your return! Next time, take advantage of some of our other amazing amenities for an entirely different luxury experience - private vineyard tours with gourmet picnic lunches from Chef Daniels, hot air balloon rides with breathtaking Blue Ridge views... Our first time at the Inn was in January 2012, a little cold, but nothing their wonderful and romantic fireplaces and a little wine could not fix. Then you add the heated floor and towel bars, and the wonderful staff and warmth was in abundance. We unfortunately arrived at the Inn late the first time and did not get to explore the grounds. We recently returned and stayed in a different room and this time arrived much earlier. We had only stayed in the Inn one previous time, but we were greeted by name when we pulled up to the front door by Steven, the bellman. Spring had sprung and the view of beautiful Virginia rolling hills from the balcony was spectacular and we knew we were in for a great weekend.

The Inn and grounds are impeccably decorated with a combination of classic and whimsical, all which catch the eye and create a sense of home. The new finishes from the extensive historical rehab by the new owners are at a level we have only found in Four Seasons or Ritz Carltons. The common areas are abundant, with a great bar, and a multi-room dining room. Although we have yet to have an occasion (hopefully soon) to enjoy their party room or the barn, they are both first class and fun, and we can see why so many weddings are held here.

We have had the opportunity to dine in the restaurant three times. Each time we came away wanting to discuss each and every wonderful course. The chef is incredibly adept of putting together seasonal and fresh ingredients that are inventive without being overbearing. His creations, many with a southern flare, were as good as any of the great restaurants we have experienced throughout the south including our favorites in Charleston and Savannah. Brunch is special, do not miss it, is a surprise that will keep you coming back, it did for us!

Room Tip: Each is original, we had the opportunity to see many of the rooms and hope to have a chance to stay...

Thank you for your wonderful comments! Sounds like you’ve enjoyed a range of seasons in your visits here. While we certainly recommend visiting us while we're in full bloom, we’re happy to hear our amenities keep our guests comfortable even during the chillier winter months! Our heated towel racks and floors, gas fireplaces and luscious duvets are pretty fantastic regardless of the season! Thank you for staying - and dining - with us. We’re so thrilled that you enjoyed your experience and welcome you to come back any time!

Our experience involved five other couples who met at the Inn for an evening of wine tasting and a special meal paired with wines. Two of the couples had one or more previous experiences at the Inn, but it was a first for the remainder including myself. My companion and I stayed in the Butler's Cottage and were escorted there by our highly competent butler, Steven. The cottage included a covered porch and a patio. We entered into a spacious sitting area with a sofa and two overstuffed chairs and noted the room included a wet bar and a refigerator as well as a television. Upon entry we found a tray waiting for us with chocolate covered strawberries on a tray on the coffee table. We immediately popped a bottle of white wine and devoured the delicious strawberries. We were impressed that the stemware was Waterford. The bedroom contained a luxurious king sized bed, fireplace, and TV and the bath contained a soaking tub, large shower with a rain drop shower head and a shower wand, and a heated towel rack. The towels were oversized abd heavy cotton and the toiletries were all of high quality. After unpacking and relaxing, we dressed for the evening and joined a wine tasting in the piano room. The wines were all from small producers from Virginia, California and France and were all excellent. We then moved downstairs for a custom 10 course dinner paired with wines. The service was exceptional and the food was on par with virtually all the fine restaurants of the world. The chef, Jason is hugely talented and knows how the mix flavors and textures of food to maximum effect. I particularly enjoyed sea scallop with stone ground grits, but other delectible dishes included lamb chop, barbecued short ribs, grouper, and breaded oyster. The wines all matched perfectly. After dinner we relaxed by the firepits and finished off the remaining wines. When we returned to our rooms we found a bedtime tray waiting with hot tea and coconut cake. We were greeted in the morning with french pressed coffee and warm begines. Finally we enjoyed a late breakfast with delicious bloody marys, the owners personal recipe heavy on fresh horseradish. The breakfast meals were just as inventive as the dinner meals and I must single out the "benediction" which involved poached eggs served over pulled chicken that had been marinated in a berry sauce as truly inventive. I should note that we were impressed that both the chef and the owner stopped by several times on both the dinner and breakfast occasion to insure we were enjoying our experience. All six couples have pledged to return individually and as a group we have already begun to plan another trip. This is a fabulous Inn and restaurant only 90 minutes from Washington, D.C. and I can't recommend it enough -- a true 5 star experience and oh, so romantic!
