“A terrible let-down”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2013

As regular visitors to the Burrawang Village Hotel, we look forward to their usually excellent food. Today, however, proved the exception - and how. Their famous cheeseburgers were appalling - the meat seriously overcooked, the cheese cold, the bun hard and cold, the fries cold. In retrospect, we should not have gone there for lunch on the Saturday after Christmas; there were too many people and, presumably, the kitchen staffed by anyone they could draft in on the day. We should have rejected the food as soon as we saw it, but we had been waiting so long that we had to eat something. Altogether an awful experience - it will be a long time before we venture there again.

I have previously enjoyed my time in and around the Burrawang area, having had the pleasure of taking in the idyllic surrounds with loved ones on previous occasions. This time would prove to be most memorable of all, as it was the setting for the most special of all gatherings.

We arrived in the afternoon and were greeted by the delightful local publican by what we soon discovered is known as the "Burrawang hello", a hearty salutation identified by two middle fingers raised in the direction of the visitor.

To our delight, the greeting didn't end there. The publican was so overjoyed to have out-of-towners come to His Own Private Part of the World, that he practically jumped over the bar and shook us warmly by the hands! Oh, did I write hands? I meant ankles, as he wrung every last dollar from our not-Burrawang trousers and dresses.

Having splashed out on an elegantly appointed private room, whose seemingly cold concrete-bunker style walls were still well-designed enough to allow neighbouring noise to filter in through the doors, we got settled and made plans for dinner. The lovely host kindly informed us that he had already arranged dinner for us, as the restaurant had thoughtfully been booked out ahead of time so as to allow us to enjoy a leisurely romp through the countryside until we found a resturant that was still open or if we wanted to use one of the high-end plastic butterknives to chase and disembowel a kangaroo.

The incredible attention to detail didn't end there, oh my Lord no! Our waste bins and laundry were left outside our serviced rooms, and initially we were, frankly, a little miffed at this. But when we thought about it they were obviously gently reminding us of our carbon footprints and the impact we had on the local environment, what with all our putting trash in bags (of all places!) and throwing money around willy-nilly! Boy, were our faces red! Thankfully, one of the ever-so-considerate housekeepers had the presence of mind to go out of her way and remove our consumerist shame and carry the burden of taking our bag of 1c hostel soap that has the consistency of marble forged from Satans' workshop to their rightful place in not Burrawang. For this, we are eternally in your debt, kindly sage.

Of course, there were a lot of other beautiful experiences for which words will forever be inadequate. I would just like to thank the staff for offering such cold shoulders on a hot summers' weekend, and for endeavoring tirelessly to keep Burrawang free from undesireables, namely those not from Burrawang.

Had lunch at this little pub in the very small and quiet town of Burrawang in the Southern Highlands. The food was great and even though it was a busy Saturday with an imminent wedding at 3pm the food came out pretty quickly even though we were told it would take a while. The food was fresh and tasty. There was enough choice on the menu. The only downside was the drinks were a bit expensive for a country pub - on par with Sydney prices. Would I eat there again - yes.

Room Tip: The view from the back outside area was great

We had lunch there yesterday. I have enjoyed the pumpkin and fetta pie several times but yesterday's was superb. I always love the ambience in the beer garden.

My only concern is the septic (?) smell down the back of the beer garden.

On my previous visit I had the lentil burger. Tastes ok but you end up in a mess trying to eat it. Maybe the recipe can be tweaked? Love the coffee and cake selection.

The pub rooms upstairs are clean and stylish. The newish rooms down the back of the property are pricey but nice for a special occasion. Breakfast is lovely.

I've always found the staff helpful and polite.

Room Tip: Know exactly what you want in accommodation before you book.

We stayed in one of the spa rooms for our anniversary a few months ago and were very dissapointed. The tarriff was expensive and we expected much more. We never go away so this added to our dissapointment. It is clear that the spa rooms are just there to add additional income to the hotel and the owner is not too interested in the detail required to make a weekend away memorable for his guests. To list a few of the dissapointmets /annoyances, for a spa room the spa was tiny and only fit one person, it was quite a joke really! It was an upright spa so you couldnt even relax and lay down! The photos on the websitevare very deceiving! Also light came into our room at 6am due to inadequate curtains, there were no DVD's or movie channels and the food at the pub made us sick. We didnt even bother checkingb he breakfast out as it was apparently cereal in the pub! For the room rate it should have included a full breakfast in bed. Very dissapointing stay. We would reccomend Bannisters in Mollymook where we went as newly weds before our honeymoon!

Four of us gently motored down from Bowral for a Monday lunch. Excellent food, well presented and very reasonably priced. Maybe a big crowd might affect the experience but a very pleasant time was had by all!
