“Nice setting, good food, service a little lacking.”

We were told that Margan had just received a "Chef's hat" and had been very popular lately, so we thought we'd give it a try.

First impressions of the winery were good, it's a really nice looking building that houses both the cellar door and the restaurant.

We were impressed by the menu, they grow a lot of their own produce on site and have lots of choice available.

The service wasn't fantastic, we did show up right at the end of service and felt a little bit rushed, but apart from that we enjoyed out lunch here a lot.

We didn't taste the wines as we had to drive, but I have heard they are pretty good too.

“Uneven”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 10, 2010

It's true that the setting here at the winery is spectacular and the restaurant design is equally impressive. We found the food uneven however. One course (gazpacho) was outstanding, the other two courses indifferent and the undercooked kingfish was offputting. Our evening was also spoilt by a noisy and inconsiderate Xmas party group next to us. The waiting staff were not overly helpful when we drew to their attention the fact that we couldn't hear conversation at our table over the raucousness of that group. As a 'solution' they offered to move us mid-meal rather than speak to the offending and offensive table. The latter was not expected from an establishment that clearly rates itself so highly.

“Impressive”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2010

Margan Restaurant is located at their winery, the building itself is outstanding (compacted earth type walls), overlooking gardens of herbs and vegetables. Service was excellent, food outstanding, and priced accordingly but not over the top. Very extensive wine list.

“Good food and a good day out”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2010

Travel past Pokolbin down Broke Road for approx. 15 minues and you come to the beautiful area of Broke nestled amongst the ranges. Here you will find Margan's Restaurant & Vineyard with its cellar door. We went there for lunch. The restaurant is open Fri-Sun for lunch, Fri & Sat for dinner.

The ambiance within the restaurant was a little disappointing as it does not make the most of the wonderful scenery you catch glimpses of, through the windows. There are more brick walls than glass. There is however a verandah, which was not available when we there, but I presume this is used as part of the restaurant and would give wonderful views. The flies were horrendous on the day, maybe this could have been alleviated by closing doors and cleaning up finished plates quickly.

The food was magnificent. For lunch you can order plates to share at an average cost of $25 each. Each plate is suitable for two people. We shared three plates, had a dessert each (who wants to share dessert !), followed by coffee. On our next visit we will order individual plates from our favorites we tasted this visit. Next time we will have one plate for entree, one plate for a main and a dessert (still not sharing!).

The plates we had ranged from gnocchi with grilled prawns, Spanish sausage and duck with produce from the garden. The food was delicious and highly recommended. The dessert was equally as good as the mains. We had the best panna cotta ever and a raspberry fool.

The service was friendly, but as were having a number of dishes, we had to ask for clean plates on one occasion as we didn't want the new dish tainted with the remains (not that were many remains) of the preceding dish. Also cleaning the plates from the table took a while after we had finished each dish, this could have been quicker particularly since there were so many flies in the restaurant

Wine could be bought by the bottle or glass and was reasonably priced with a glass of wine being from $5. Coffee was good and was from a local supplier.

On the whole we had a wonderful meal and will be going back, when the flies have gone.
