Description: On the water's edge on Kaanapali Beach, Hula Grill offers a stunning view of the Pacific and of the islands of Lanai and Molokai that has to be seen to be believed. From this distinctly Hawaiian vantage point, you are invited to join us as we celebrate the hospitality, culture and cuisine of the islands. Dinner is served in our open-air dining room where you can relax in the ambiance of a plantation era beach house while enjoying renown chef Peter Merriman's Hawaii regional seafood that isn't only a favorite of vacationers, but locals, too. Hawaiian fresh fish and locally grown produce are combined to create amazing menu offerings that are as colorful as they are flavorful. Fiery sunsets are served up daily along with live Hawaiian entertainment. Our Barefoot Bar offers a more casual menu serving both lunch and dinner under authentic thatch roof umbrellas and a sand floor where you can sink your toes in. The Barefoot Bar is seated on a walk-in basis only.

Our family of 4 ate at the Barefoot Bar section, the service was excellent. The kids were given colouring in and enjoyed their kids menu meals. The husband had the fish special and I had fish tacos which were delicious. Cocktails were yummy. The view is perfect and atmosphere fun

we went here with some friends who had just gotten into Maui. Several people had told us what an amazing restaurant this was. heard it was a great place to watch the sunset. We looked at the menus posted outside before going to put our names on the seating list. Looked like food the adults and kids would all like. However, we found out that there was an almost 2 hour wait for the beach view seats (which was why we went there), so we opted for the immediate inside seating, hoping for at least a glimpse of the sunset. We were disappointed that we were seated as far inside as possible (though it was a cool beachy room). We set our iphone to go off right before the sunset so our friends who hadn't seen a Maui sunset yet could run outside and see one.
Our waitress was great. Very nice and thoroughly explained the menu items. But we were surprised to see the menu for this inside seating was much different from the menu for the beachside seating! Entrees were high $20's and up, and we had 5 kids with us that didn't want the fish of the day. She was nice when we asked if we could order off of the beach menu even though the answer was "no". but she did let the kids (up to high school aged) order off of the "kids menu". Luckily they were all able to find something that would be okay. It was pretty expensive though, even for the kids menu! The waitress's attitude changed slightly when she brought our bill, before we could ask for a split check. She was able to accommodate us but we could tell it irritated her.

All in all, it is a nice restaurant with good food, but unless you are seated in the beach-side of the restaurant, it isn't anything amazing as far as ambience. The food is good, but the prices are steep, and it felt a little like a bait and switch when we learned the menus we saw outside weren't the same menu we were given once seated.

I'd probably recommend this place to someone with the caveat that inside and beachside dining will be two very different experiences, so they know what to expect.

We chose Hula Grill over its sister restaurant next door, Leilani's, for lunch because we wanted something a little more casual. We were seated at one of the outside tables which featured warm dry sand as the floor, giving you the feeling that you were practically on the beach. Our group shared several plates and each one was delicious. The Crab and Macadamia Nut Wontons, Local-Style Potstickers and Fish & Chips were standouts. The staff was friendly and attentive.
