Casa Ensenada Waterfront Guesthouse
Ranked #9 of 20 Culebra B&B and Inns

We booked el pequeño at the last minute for a get away vacation to Culebra for Christmas. The owner was great at providing me with all the details on how to get there and the amenities provided and was quite responsive via email. However, when we arrived and throughout our entire stay,I did not see either owner at all. Granted we were only there for one night, it would have been nice to meet at least one of the owners while we were there. Anyway, our room was nice but we also had a lot of mosquitos and I also noticed some tiny ants Ok... the counter near the kitchenette and the bathroom sink. Other than that, it was a great place, the deck out back was lovely, and the other guests starting there were very helpful and friendly.

First, the downside: (a) there are three small apartments -- we had the larger one, comfortable for four -- and the center one can hear loud conversations/coughing from the other two; (b) only one bathroom, off the separate bedroom; But the advantages: (a) walk to all good restaurants, and there are quite a few; (b) good kayaks: a double and an excellent single; (c) free (if technically illegal, but never enforced) parking across the street; (d) full kitchen (no breakfast included with apt.), well appointed; (e) comfortable beds (note that the two in the living room are double futon-style beds, good for teenage children of couple in bedroom; (f) very available (by phone) and cordial owner; beautiful waterfront for sitting in the evening or morning.

Room Tip: see above -- good for one couple and then kids. Don't try for two couples -- privacy would be...

Peaceful. No body bothers you. Walking distance to everything. The place has a dock which is a plus.

We stayed at the Casa Ensenada for 4 nights and had a very enjoyable time. The room
(Estudio) was clean and comfortable. Nothing fancy, it reminded me of the kitchenette hotel rooms you will find on Florida's gulf coast. A small stove, frig and microwave gives
you the freedom to "eat-in" if you like. The back patio was relaxing and the view was great. Great location, close to everything and the taxis's can be flagged down right outside the door. A very good value for the price.
The physical aspects of this hotel earn it a #4. The reason we marked a # 5 is because of the owners and staff. All were informative, helpful and Friendly. Not very many hotels we have stayed at have all of these attributes.

Downtown walking distance to mot things and ferry. Nice waterfront to sit out on. The room - pechengo was not all that great, dark and in the back of the house, but the rest was good. Culebra is fantastic, the water is beautiful and there are definitely places that you can go and be by yourself if you are willing to explore. Island time is slower than the mainland in the best of ways. The new owners were very welcoming and nice. They were staying there but living on their boat while they were fixing up the property. Better food here than on the main land. Zaco's Tacos is the best, but other places were good as well, like Suzies and the Dingy Dock.

Casa Ensenada fit our needs perfectly for our two night stay on Culebra.
We rented the Grande - it was clean and comfortable, and it was great to have a full kitchen, grill, beach cooler/chairs, and internet.
While the house is a quick walk (3 or 4 blocks?) from the ferry dock - and, on the route to Flamenco beach, we highly recommend renting a Jeep while you're on the island. We had a lot of fun exploring.
We bought some groceries from Milka's, and were able to cook a lovely dinner on the back patio of the guest house. The grocery prices were comparable to what we pay in the D.C. area.
A couple of negatives - there were some mosquitos in the room (and we were careful about keeping the doors and windows shut...). It seemed like they were coming in from somewhere else. Also, the toilet needs a new flapper/seal, so it wasn't always flushing quite right.
Also, while we were there, the guesthouse was bought by a new owner. It seems that it will be under the same management.... but, who knows if the new ownership will cause any changes?

A warning - most of the restaurants on the island are closed Monday through Wednesday. We were surprised to learn this as we looked for places to eat.

My husband & I stayed at in the Grande for 10 days and had the nicest stay. It had everything we could want to make us comfortable from the fully equipped kitchen, wifi, TV, fans, AC (which we didn't need) & comfortable king size bed (very important as I have back issues). Karen was great in supplying us with whatever we wanted or needed. We felt as though we were staying with good friends. We absolutely loved the patio with it's comfortable seating & we made use of the gas grill and cooler provided for beach lunches. The breeze & views were fantastic. We could easily walk to town & the largest grocery store on the island (Mayra's). Milka's also has everything you could desire in a market & is close by.
We chartered Matt from Air Culebra to fly us over from San Juan and back & we would definately go that way again. It was worth paying more as we gained a whole day to snorkel instead of sitting around the San Juan airport all day waiting to go back home.
Rob Kingsley took us out snorkeling for a day on his large motorboat. I highly reccommend going out for a day with him. He took us to Luis Pena Island and Carlos Rosario for some excellent snorkeling. Make a reservation at El Eden for dinner one night. Their saffron lobster risotto is legendary. Also love Mamacita's for their Big Kahuna burger and the pet iguanas. Susie's has great food as well as terrific chocolate cake. And Dingy Dock has wonderful coconut rum french toast with guava syrup for breakfast..
If I had anything at all negative to say about Casa Ensenada it would be that it needs new floors. We didn't even notice it after a day there though. There are just too many nice things about this place to mention. My husband already wants to plan his next vacation there!
