“Fine...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2014 via mobile

We were at Pestana from Jan 22-29
Here is my quick review:

Hotel: good, clean, very nice staff
Our shower was broken...

Food: Cuba food will always be average. This food was ok, but lacked of variety. Having went to cuba a few other times... The food is always averge but usually has more variety or themed buffets. There was never any seafood :(
The "a la carte" restaurants were fine.
Lobster dinner: the hotel offers you the choice to pay 18 pesos per person to have a lobster dinner. We were a group of 7 and chose to have it but were very disapointed!
The lobster itself was very very dry and the service was awfull, they made us wait over 1h to get the lobster. It is not worth paying.

Oh and the line-ups at the buffet are always very long. Not enough stations oe chefs.
Ate a lot of pasta, rice, bread, cheese and chicken throught my stay.
Their red meat (hamburger/ hotdogs) always seemed undercooked.

Beach: beatiful, crystal clear water. The only downside is that there are a lot pf rocks at the entrence of the water and the beach is not very large.
I suggest you take a paddle boat and go check out the very far end of the beach (on the right) it's beautiful :)

Excursion: we paid 95 $ (pesos) to do the "Jeep On"... TOTALLY NOT WORTH IT.
They said we were suppose to go to a mountain... Never did. Suppose to snorkle... Never did (they said we didnt have enough time) and the funny part it they said we should expect coming back to the hotel around 5:30 pm... We came back at 3:30 pm !!!
The fun part was the short speed boat ride.
The next day our entire group went to complain to our Sunwing rep and unfortunatly they did not manage the situation very well. We lost 2 morning "complaining / negociating" how they could compansate us... All they wanted to offer was an access to the VIP section at the airport (worth 25$). We were not interested in getting this. In the end they ended up refunding us 25$.

Pool: was nice and big enough.

Animation: fun and the shows were good too. Note that there is night club / disco

Bar: the drinks are never the same from one bar to another.
Think of bringing a big plastic cup, because theu serve the drinks in very very thin and small plastic glasses.

Overall, i would recommend Pestana if you do not have too high expectations and pay a fairly low price :)

guess we hit the place on a good week, had a really nice vacation, ohh! bring water shoes, this is not a club 2000 dollar a week, so those who expect to get the same bang for there buck as a club 2000 a week, you will leave there on a sour note. A 3rd of the price very good value!

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2014

My husband and I returned from Pestana Cayo Coco on Feb 11th after a one week stay. This is our 13th all-inclusive vacation, and our fourth trip to Cuba. We were very excited about this trip, and travel with reasonable expectations. Our carrier was Sunwing and we had excellent service on both legs of our trip.

First impressions when getting off the bus and walked into the lobby was very pleasant. The lobby is tastefully decorated, with a bright airy feeling with ample seating arrangements to suit couples to large groups. Unfortunately, the good impression did not last long. The front desk staff, were dis-interested, unwelcoming and aloof. It’s a shame really, because this resort has great potential, but when your greeted with such a blasé attitude, it doesn’t create a good vibe. I must also state that this was not the case with all members of the front desk staff, but one or two that we encountered several times during our stay, and the attitude didn’t change. Our room was not ready, so we returned at the time they instructed us to, and we were given our card. It was pushed across the desk at us, with zero instructions on how to get to the room, no map , except a small piece of paper with the card wrapped in it. It wasn’t until we got to our room that we realized that this small piece of paper, about the size of a deck of cards, contained the map of the resort.

Our room was in building ten. We had a king size bed and a small partial ocean view. The décor of the rooms is bright and tropical. The bathroom is well equipped, with the exception of the very odd shaped shower head that makes it very difficult to not flood your bathroom. Also the shower curtain barely skims the top of the tub, so take care. The other thing that is of concern, especially to folks with mobility issues is the height of the tub. We have encountered this in other resorts in Cuba, so it appears to be the norm. The safe was modern and worked well. We had no issues with the A/C or our mini-fridge. Our fridge kept things so cold it was great. The resort supplies only a bottle of water. If you would like soft drinks or beer ect for your room you must purchase it separately in the store on the resort.

The pool is lovely and new, however, there are already missing tiles so take care. The pictures online, especially on the hotels website are very deceiving and lead you to believe the pool is a LOT bigger than it actually is. It is divided in half by a bridge and you cant swim under it. The major issue with the pool area is the seating and the shade. You essentially have to be up by 0700am if you want any chance of finding a chair with any shade at all. The whole pool area is surrounded around the back with pergolas, however the tops are completely open providing ZERO shade. There are a few scattered small huts with roofs, however they are too small so they don’t provide consistent shade. Unfortunately this was a huge issue for us as we do not enjoy laying and baking in the sun. I spend my whole work life getting up at the crack of dawn and I don’t want to have to do it on vacation just to be able to enjoy the pool; I personally feel the pool area is way to small to accommodate the number of guests this resort holds.

Food…well not really sure what to say here! Its typical Cuban resort food to some degree however there were other issues at this resort. The buffet is extremely crowded and LOUD. It felt like we were a herd of farm animals going in for a feeding. The line -ups to even get a simple fried egg took twenty minutes plus. The selection was more repetitive than any other resort I have been to unfortunately. The ala-cartes are another issue. Every other resort I have ever been to takes graduated reservations. At Pestana there is a 6:30 and 8:30 seating. So the “herd” lines up and all descend at the resort at once, so its instantly filled. So essentially is just a fancy buffet feel, and its such a shame. The décor in the ala-cartes is so nice and it could be a totally different experience. We went to the Italian at the first seating. We sat for 25 minutes before our order was taken. The bruschetta I ordered came minus tomatoes and the decorative drizzle on the plate I couldn’t chip off with a knife. Then fifty minutes into sitting there, the waiter came back to tell us they were out of lasagna. We cancelled our remaining reservations. It wasn’t worth the effort. The snack bar by the pool , the food wasn’t much better. The staff though pleasant, seemed like they didn’t know who was supposed to do what.

The store on the resort is tiny and sells essentially zero for gifts ect, so plan to do some shopping else where. Also the ONLY snack food they sell is a few odd chocolate bars and cookies. So bring what you think you may need. They do have a limited, but not good tasting selection of wine. Lots of rum and soft drinks, limited juices and some beer. The internet is painfully slow but good enough for short emails or Facebook.
Entertainment is limited. The night show doesn’t start until 9:45 at night which is quite late. There is no disco ect. There is some live music in the lobby on some evenings. There isn’t a lot to do once the day is done at the beach and pool.

The beach is beautiful and the water pristine. You do need to walk a bit to the right for a sandy entrance but that wasn’t an issue. Again, shade is a problem. Also for those that are sensitive to sand fleas and no-see-ems like me, I got eaten alive. I returned home covered in bites. But that is most certainly no fault of the resort.

To sum it up, this is a lovely esthetic resort, with huge potential . But there are significant issues and of all the resorts we have been to, this is the last one I would return to. It saddens me to write that, because we so wanted to like it.

Dear Caribe-Harlequin46:

I really appreciate your comment where you point that the hotel has potential, you like the room, the pool , the beach and the food but you dislike the lines at the buffet, we recognize we are new and learning of these situations we open a new service that we call breakfast express at the snack , it is a smaller buffet to try to avoid the lines in the main restaurant. We are trying now. About the shadows of the pergolas at the pool we have comments that we have a lot of them but it is new for us that they are small and do not make enough shadow. We will check what we can do. Thanks again and we will work with your comment at the a la carte restaurant. We hire a new chef since last week to be in front of the operation and this person came from Portugal.
I hope you will return to Cuba and visit us to see if we made the changes or give a new feedback.
Sincerely,
Director

Food - typical of Cuba from everything I've read = not very good. Do not waste your time with the Al La Carte's - worse than the buffet. The Snack bar is your best option.

Beach Towels - serious problems; irregular delivery. We went three days before we were able to get clean towels.

Customer service - poor response. Rooms were not ready on time; refused to take $ for towels on checking so unable to get. Towels until the next day. Westjet rep was of no help either.

Rooms we're great; property was nice; beach was fantastic! But you needed to go down before 7am to get beach chairs as there weren't enough for all guests.

We can see that you like the property, the beach, the room, but I recognize we have problem with towels, like I explained before the inconvenience with the external Laundry, about the beach chairs the same with the groups that we received during two weeks they reserved our chairs and never used during the day and was our first time and we did not took action properly with these guests.
I thank you for your comment and we would like you come to Cuba again and give us another chance to serve you better.

I am finally writing my review and feel that I should to save anyone thinking of going here to not go!! I have stayed at 3 stars in cuba and had a much better experience. I wish I could go back in time and rebook elsewhere. The most current reviews are exactly what we found also......too many ppl and not enough staff - the food was horrible!!! Long lines and most of the time the food not fully cooked and very repetitive. I was sick for two days until finally going to see the nurse for some relief of the nausea and stomach pains. The tubs are way to high - would not want to see my parents getting in and out of that tub! The only reason I gave it a two was that is was new and the décor is very nice!! The beach is rocky with lots of jelly fish and the pool was freezing!!! The animation played the same cd by the pool everyday all day - it became very annoying after a while and the shows at night start way too late - they do work hard but not worth watching! There were several waiters in the lobby that were great but once again too many ppl and they were working their butts off with the amount of ppl and lack of staff. I truly wanted to have a great time and wish my review was better! We are not travelers that expect a 5 star and know how cuba is - we were in cayo coco (another hotel) last year and loved our holiday. So please look elsewhere if you are looking to go to cuba!

Dear Nancy M:
Sorry that you did not enjoyed ypour holidays, our staff is very good, but as I wrote we had two weeks that had exceeded our available staff and there are not more in the area to hire. Now everything is more controlled.
I regret that your visit was at the same time with these two groups, as groups were always all at the same time in the same place and the service became very complicated at times.
The hotel is worth it, but there are always situations that deal.

There were 9 of us Feb 1 -9 (5 adults and 4 kids) with lots of Cuba all inclusive experience. I NEVER do long reviews but.here are a few of our good and bad thoughts:

1. great beach experience (beautiful clear ocean water) and when the tide goes out- wow--you are hanging out with sand dollars and starfish and sea cucumbers--pretty amazing!

But why do our fellow tourists think that live starfish are toys for their little "darlings"?. We were infuriated to see parents and kids carrying them around like beach toys and even taking them back to their room as souvenirs!

And, the issue of people "saving chairs" on the beach (AND at the pool) in the middle of the night really needs to be addressed.

The pool and beach attendants whose job it is to assist in getting your chairs were out of luck (and tips) the entire week-- that is their livelihood and they really lost out while we were there.

2. the staff went "full steam ahead" while we were there and were usually still smiling even while serving non stop lineups of people at the beach, lobby and snack bars.

The management at this hotel must know that they really need more bodies as soon as possible to accommodate the number of guests especially when it is at full capacity.

3. rooms are very nice but there was a huge glitch with the towel service while we were there (no clean towels for three days!) and who was the designer/architect that specified the shower nozzle (sprayed everywhere causing lots of floods) and deep tub combination?

4. the buffet was often chaos for breakfast and dinner (lunch was calmer because there were other great options) and at full capacity the resort is not really set up to accommodate that many hungry tourists at one time. We often opted to just go to the pool snack bar (even for breakfast) to avoid the chaos and the staff there were all amazing.

Try to book all of the a la cartes if you can(Cuban, Italian and Mediterranean) since they are all great and there are excellent Cuban musicians performing there as well as at some of the lobby and theatre shows. The nightly entertainment was very good and the performers are all very talented and professional.

Bonus--the airport is very close and has some pretty good shopping and duty free shops.

Dear muwer:

I appreciate your comments and we understand that during your stay, you found good things, like the beach, the room, the staff. But you had things that disliked, we had two groups that reserved all the beach chairs and not used them, I regret not having checked it properly but they made this during the night, this is the first time taht happens in the hotel, the same happens to us in restaurants entered at the same time and stayed there, they congested the operation.
Besides we had problems with external laundry and we had three days with drawbacks of towels and it was very stressful for our guests.
We have the same number of guests and is now quiet.
