“I had a very good stay at the Tryp”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

I stayed at the Tryp in early December and had a very enjoyable stay. I was in block 4 which is a bit removed but not far from the lobby and main pool. My room and bathroom were very dated and so is the common areas of the hotel. The room was comfortable and I was not in there very much so in a sense in did not really matter all that much to me. The sidewalks leading to the beach , pools, etc are in need of update as they are all worn out. The food was ok. The staff at the hotel are all very helful and friendly. The manager is very present (and pleasant) and seems to really want to go out of his way to satisfy the guests. The beach is nice white sand but quite narrow. As you walk towards the Sol it gets wider and we walked the beach almost every day for hours. I like white wine, and for me that is an important part of my dinner in the evening. The white wine at the Tryp was very acceptable which sometimes has not been in other resorts I have stayed and has ruined the dinner experience. We dined in a different a la carte every night. They were all ok , specially the International. My least favorite was the Cuban , although the banana (plantain?) chips were amazing. The buffet has many items to choose from. Some of the dishes are way too salty, and many people were complaining about this. The smoothie bar in the morning was very very good. The cappucinos were also delicious. Do not bother paying extra for an oceanview room because they really dont exist at the Tryp. I would go again to this resort if I was able to get a good deal like I did on this particular vacation. I would recommend it to people who are not picky when it comes to accommodations and food. It is a place to relax and have a good time as people are very friendly.

Room Tip: If you like quiet opt for Blocks 11 or thereabouts. If you like party atmosphere ask for a room arou...

I have just returned from a week's vacation in Cuba with my sister and her husband and am writing this review on behalf of all of us.

CHECK IN- The check in was quick & friendly – not much to say here. It was painless.

THE ROOM - The rooms are rustic, utilitarian, very clean & comfortable, everything working or quickly repaired upon request, lots of hot water, all that you need if you're not spending your vacation in your room. Beds are firm but comfortable. Our first night was in block 6 which overlooks the party pool and is close to the nightly entertainment, but since this is not our scene we requested a move to a quieter location which was graciously accommodated the next day. . . to block 12. When we return we will ask for a room in either block 10 or 11 since they overlook the quiet pool. These blocks are a quick 2 minute walk to the gorgeous beach. The rooms are relatively sound proof compared to other resorts we've stayed at in Cuba and the house keeping was excellent. Remember to tip!

THE FOOD – When we arrived, we scrambled to book our 'a la cartes', however once we had our first day at the buffet, we came to really enjoy the buffet variety and quality of food, as well as the service, so we never did go to the 'a la cartes'. Yes, many people bring condiments from home, but really they are not necessary since the food is flavorful, plentiful and can easily accommodate a variety of special dietary needs. It is basic whole foods no boxed stuff diet, hence high quality, and devoid of additives and low in salt. (healthy). At first glance, it appears that the buffet is the same every day and at every meal; however, there is enough variety throughout the buffet to mix & match and plan a varied diet. Yes you do have to think....it's the only work you'll do all week. The food at the grills were skillfully prepared; the lines were short and the service was fabulous. I especially liked the crepe grill for breakfast.

THE BEACH – What can I say...kilometers of white sand, where you can walk and explore. There is a great bluff along the beach to check out, but remember to wear your shoes here. There is no restriction to walking along the beach in front of other resorts. The beach is very wide, and the water is shallow especially at low tide making it ideal for families with children.

ENTERTAINMENT – The entertainment is family friendly, light and fun. At other resorts, we really enjoyed the roving minstrels that play traditional Cuban music at the bars and during dinner. These were really no where to be seen at the the Tryp.

THE GROUNDS – The gardeners at the Tryp take their work very seriously and it shows. The grounds are impeccable, and there is obviously great attention to landscape detail. The Tryp also employs a staff dedicated to insect and rodent control. We enjoyed these healthy chickens and cats as they fulfilled their responsibilities and occasionally made themselves available for kudos and pats. It is easy to get around to the pools, restaurants and bars.

GUEST SERVICES – Guest services sets a positive tone for staff and tourists. They are accessible, eager to please and prompt with their responses. Unlike our experiences at other resorts we got the impression that the staff are treated well, are expected to provide a good service, but encouraged to take time to engage with the tourists, which makes for a more intimate experience.

THE DRINKS – Here is where the Tryp falls a little short. The drinks are not of the best quality. An upgrade in wines and cocktails would go a long way.

Note – The resort is isolated from a real Cuban society, so is more appropriate for a beach vacation. There are excursions to mainland small cities, if you really want to have contact with Cuban life.
Also, the evenings were a little cool with a brisk breeze, so consider when packing.

TRAVEL TIP – Wash your hands often! At the buffet, where many hands are handling the serving spoons we have had great success with being hygiene diligent. We make a habit of using hand wipes after plating our meal and before we eat. No one in our party suffered any gastrointestinal problems during this trip. I have come to the conclusion that where you have hundreds of hands touching the same spoon, you have to expect that at least one of them has not washed their hands and if not feeling well can easily transmit their sickness to others.

Enjoy Cuba and tip often. Tips are very much appreciated and never expected. Take the time to exchange your money to Cuban CUCS since the staff have some difficulty receiving value for foreign currency.

We arrived at Hotel Tryp on the 25th Feb 2013 and were very happy, situated in block 1, which is very quiet and if you have the top floor views over the sea, which are amazing and beautiful. The room was a little tired but we were happy and the shower was the best. The food is great, something for everyone, a massive selection (we have been in hotels before where they do not provide ice cream but there was a good selection. The 24 hour bar staff are not so great, they dont listen to what you want so often give you a drink that you had not asked for and regularly serve people behind you whilst you are still waiting, my husband found this so frustrating and argued with them to be told "its easy just say what you want" thats ok if someone else is not being served at the same time. The lobby bar is much better and staff are more efficient but too near reception so was kind of strange. The al la carte restaurants are quite good to, would recommend the cuban as it was in a beautiful little wooden building which looked like someone's home. There is nothing to do outside the hotel apart from the excursions. There is like a lagoon that runs under the 24 hour bar and quite near to the buffet restaurant which absolutely stinks, very off putting when you are on your way to breakfast. Not pleasant and attention is needed to rectify this - smells like a swamp. The animation team do not really speak at all, not to us anyway, Mariellis the childrens entertainer is lovely and sweet, we really got on well with her. overall we personally had a lovely holiday, lounging by the pool everyday getting very tanned. It does get very cold in the evenings which can be off putting (it is winter there at the minute) so would take something warm. We would recommend going to Tryp and would go back if there was not so many other destinations to visit. Dont like Thomas Cook one bit though, seats are too small for such a long flight. Watch out for the Canadian students, we escaped 2 days after they came but they kept us up for 2 nights as they were placed in our block. March would not be a good time to go!!!!!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 169 in block 1, which was very quiet.

We were surprised at how good the food was at the Tryp. When we decided to go to Cuba, we figured food will be bland but to our surprise mostly every meal was delicious. Having been to various resorts in Cuba, this was my favourite. The beach was spectacular, went on for miles, food was good, resort well maintained, rooms were old and a bit tired but clean. The staff at the Tryp were friendly, the service on the whole was good. My only complaint was that I couldn't get any Kleenex at the resort, either from the hotel or to buy and I had a terrible cold. The beach made up for anything lacking. We are in Cuba after all, not a 5 star resort in downtown Toronto. My advice, don't hesitate to book Tryp, you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: We were in room 1216 which we loved. It was at the far end of the resort but close to the beach and...

we stayed in this hotel February / March 2013 for our Honeymoon. The wedding / Honeymoon co-ordinator went well out of his way to make our honeymoon special.
The hotel was very clean and the grounds/pool/beach are where it excels. There are lots of staff cleaning and serving etc. The rooms are pretty basic and definitely need updating but you have to remind yourself that this is a Third World Country and emerging tourism so it is not in the same as other Caribbean resorts. If you are aware of this and dont ho and compare it to higher star established resorts then you should have a good time.

Our biggest tip is to bring a drink container like good sized plastic cups / drink flask / coffee style plastic mug as this is what the Canadian's do and it makes a major difference as the drinks are served in small plastic cups..

If you want to hear about the beach, the rooms, the food, the restaurants, the pools, the drinks and so on, please refer to the other reviews! For me, everything was up to my expectations except for the animation, it was WAY BEYOND! If you want to be quiet, no problem at all, you have plenty of areas where you can relax but if you want to have fun, get ready, the animation team is AWESOME! When i was there, this guy called Chino was in charge of the daily activities and the evening shows and let me tell you, we had a blast! Actually, i don't know where he takes all his energy but he seems to be everywhere at any time of the day, always smiling and ready to help!! Trust me, when this guy takes the microphone, you will laugh, dance, run, sing or even just clap in your hands and enjoy yourself, that's for sure! I hate those places where you feel pressure to participate and where you are put on the spot when you don't want to but there, it's not the case. The team is always respectful and they just want you to enjoy your holiday as much as possible. Don't forget to spoil them too with pesos or gifts, they work so hard to make your stay memorable and they deserve it so much! You ask me if I would recommend this hotel to my friends? The answer is DEFINITELY! :)

the beach is very narrow but with your chair you go into the see and you have the feeling to be alone !
the beach bar was closed at 5 maybe 1/2 more would be great. But for all inclusive nothing to say.
we changed our room because it was very far away. We had a room on swimming pool view on the 2nd floor. Animations for the kids at 8.00 great Our child is 8 years old and he enjoyed playing with the other kids . He was on the stage and try to understand what the organizer say to do ! Funny. We went to Cuba 10 years before and didnt see Cayo coco. A lack for us The best place in Cuba for the beach. For the food : seafood wasn t fresh But so many things to eat
Disco super : after the show ....disco

Room Tip: ask for a room with the view of the swimming pool , and the 2nd floor and a building near to the bar
