We stayed at this resort from Sept. 14 - 21 and absolutely loved it! We were in a standard room and did not find anything wrong with it...no need to upgrade to Lagoon room. We arrived at 11:00 am and our rooms were ready which was a huge plus(the hotel was not at max capacity which was even better)! The night of our arrival we got a knock on our door and it was a staff member welcoming us to the resort and gave us a bottle of rum. The beach is beautiful, always some activities going on (the animation team does a great job encouraging participation but are in no way pushy).

For $5 CUC you can take the bus out to Pilar beach with stops at other resorts, we spent one day at Cayo Guillermo and it's well worth it! We booked one excursion through our Air Canada rep onsite(David), it was called Ocean Splash - you get about a 15 minute dolphin experience, then off to Pilar beach where you're taken to an island for snorkeling, then a speed boat through mangroves to a restaurant/bar in the middle of nowhere for lunch (meal & all your booze/drinks are included) then to a different place for more snorkeling. A busy day and we were back at the resort by 4pm, definitely recommend that excursion.

The food at the resort is fantastic, we ate at all three a la cartes as well as the buffet and never had a bad meal. Wednesdays are Cuban day and they put on a huge lunch at the beach restaurant where you can get lobster as well. Drinks are great as well...bring your Bubba!

Definitely recommend this resort!

We have just returned from 10 days in Cuba - 3 in Havana and 7 at the Melia. Havana was good but after we got to the Melia we both said we wished we had just gone there for the whole 10 days!

We had upgraded via the hotel to a lagoon room which meant we had a bottle of prosecco, whisky and havana rum included in our room and got to have breakfast in the international restaurant. It seemed that guests who had upgraded through Thomas Cook didn't receive either of those benefits so I would recommend emailing the hotel directly to upgrade. Our lagoon room was beautiful and well worth the money. It was spacious, modern and clean, with a lovely modern bathroom and walk in shower. We also had a big balcony with a couple of sun loungers. It was nice to sit out there and watch the sun set over the lagoon and all the electric storms! We were in the furthest lagoon room so no smell or midges (was a bit whiffy as you first walked onto the lagoon where there was some stagnant water but who cares!!).

The hotel surroundings were really nice, it was lovely walking round in the evenings with everything all lit up. There was a sports club, and a pool bar where the pool tables were free. We didn't go to the disco. The beach was lovely, especially if you go in the afternoon when the tide has gone out a bit! We were taken out in the hobie cat. We didn't watch any of the shows as preferred to go to the pool bar after dinner.

The staff were great, really hardworking and friendly particularly in the international restaurant, and it was nice to come back from dinner and find the night maid had come and put petals on the bed!! The coconuts and palm tree hats were a great touch.

The food was great - especially in the international restaurant where we had a 9 course tasting menu which was fantastic and beautifully presented - as good food as I've had anywhere!! The other two a la carte's were ok not exceptional. The buffet food was lovely as the meat, fish and pasta was all cooked to order, the food was kept hot and there was plenty of variety.

We took the bus to Pilar beach which was well worth it (if a bit windy!!) at 5 CUC per person- it took a while to get there but the views on the drive were lovely and the beach was spectacular. We also did the speedboat excursion which was a good laugh, and deep sea fishing which was expensive but if you can find another couple to go with you can halve the cost as you pay for the boat regardless of how many of you there are.

Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel - we didn't want to leave to return to Havana, I cannot think of a single thing to complain about other than that our flight from Havana was delayed 4 hours, so we arrived at the Melia late and starving - and there was nowhere to eat other than to get room service which we had to pay for as it was out of hours. It would have been great if they could have put on even just snacks for us, but literally everything else was perfect.

We don't go back to the same place twice, but if we did I would definitely come back to the Melia!!

Room Tip: We were in 3922 - the furthest room out on the lagoon so a bit of a walk but amazing views, really p...

stayed for two weeks in september2013 just hubby and me . greeted with cocktails on arrival , very quick check in , golf buggy to take you and luggage to rooms !also no wristbands here !amazing staff , all really friendly and helpful, anything you want .. just ask !white sand and crystal clear sea, large pool, beautiful gardens tended by many talented gardeners ( they make hats, and sculptures from leaves ), the entertainment crew were brilliant , not pushy .. if you say no they leave you alone! , we had a lagoon room which was really nice , I was expecting swarms of mosquitos but the hotel sprayed bug spray twice a day however some guests did get bitten , I used 3 cans of level 4 jungle formula and we had a plug in too , but no bites , phew. fabulous holiday , will definitely visit again .

Room Tip: lagoon rooms worth the extra money

This was our first time in Cuba. The Hotel is well laid out, and perfect for a couples holiday. The Rooms are huge and are well equipped for guests. The food is good for Cuba comprising a central restaurant - buffet style and a nymber of a la carte which require booking. The best thing of all was the staff. They could not have been more helpful, courteous, happy and always willing to go the extra yard to provide sublime service. If you intend to visit this part of Cuba, this is the place to be!!

Hubby and I stayed for 1 week from Sept 28-Oct 05. We were actually booked for Iberostar Mojito but changed our minds on that resort at the last minute and TRULY PLEASED that we did! We've been to different parts of Cuba many times but this is the only Cuban review we've done. Quite frankly, it's comparable to Sandals in Varadero food-wise but with a lovely, homey feel to the place because of the employees. All cheerful. All helpful and no one with their hand stuck out for a tip (which makes you tip them more anyway because you really want to) Nice place just like Paradisus in Holguin. Met lots of other travellers who frequent Melia Cayo Coco 2-3 times per year because it's so great! Really, you can't go wrong travelling as a couple to this resort. BTW we did see the rooms/food at Iberostar – if you don't have kids with you, choose Melia instead – you'll be glad you did. Just book it, you'll be fine.

Room Tip: The lagoon room is wonderful – modern enough and spacious.

Melia is a nice resort. What made this resort memorable was the people we met. The food is average though the sea food bar was really nice. The beach is limited at high tide but beautiful all the same. This is a small resort so were ever your room is its a good place. The lake rooms are the furthest from everything I don't think there worth the extra money. Spent some time at the other Melia it was really nice if it wasn't for the great people we met probably would of tried to move to Melia Guillermo. Lots of room at the pool but lacks shade.

Dear Customer,
We are truly sorry to read we have not been able to provide you with a holiday experience up to your expectations. Thank you for your comments, especially for your praises on the staff, who do a wonderful job for all our customers. We are aware that there is always room for improvement, and we are constantly working on it. As we have previously stated on this site, we are providing our beach a pool areas with more palapas; in a couple of days we will have finished the works you should have seen around the pool which includes our solarium enlargement. As of your comment on our lagoon rooms being located away from everything, I have to say that they are spread all along the hotel so we have some closest to hotel main amenities and some a litle bit away. But this is a small resort, only 250 rooms and as many customers have stated here, none of them is far away from main amenities. Besides, we always take requests into consideration, so if our customers want to stay closer or quieter, you only have to request it and we will just be too glad to provide. I sincerely hope that this recent experience do not deter you from staying with us again at Meliá Cayo Coco, where would be most pleased to serve and provide you with the best of our services.
With best regards,
Santiago Innerarity
