WOW! What a fantastic holiday we had at this resort. We were then end August first week in September and stayed in a lagoon room. This was our first trip to Cuba and hopefully not our last! On arrival we were offered champagne while we waited to check in, which didn't take all that long considering a coach-load of people had just turned up. Our cases were taken by the kind staff and delivered to our room within 30 mins of our arrival at our room. Our room was clean, bright and modern with a wonderful view over the lagoon and mangroves. The staff are so pleasant, the hotel is very clean, the food was wonderful - if you can't find something good to eat in the buffet there is something wrong with you! The other restaurants were great too and we had no trouble getting reservations in them. A beautiful beach which is cleaned daily. We didn't have hardly any problems with mosquito bites - we probably only had a dozen between us, but whether this was because we were in the middle of the lagoon with no vegetation around us, or whether because we used Avon's Skin So Soft Original Woodland shower gel and oil spray or we just had good 50% deet spray I can say, but lots of other guests had lots of bits and swollen ankles.
My only minor niggles, which I put on the feedback sheet and the hotel has already acknowledged, were that because our room was the last in a row, only 3 times out of the two weeks was it cleaned when we returned to it at around 3-4pm after being on the beach or out on a trip - however, the maid was lovely and we just moved to the balcony whilst she cleaned. The other was that because of the time of year, we did have a torrential downpour on a couple of evenings and there wasn't enough waiters to cope with the amount of people in the lobby bar, so we just went to the billiard bar, which was quieter.
I really can't say enough about this place, it was the perfect resort and hotel and the perfect way to spend our 20th Wedding Anniversary!

Room Tip: Don't take any towels these are provided, including pool/beach towels. The tea is Ok but best d...

I had emailed the hotel before we arrived to ask for a quiet, upper floor non smoking room, we got the first two but when we opened the door the room stank of old cigarettes but after leaving the patio door open for a while the awful smell did get better, at least we got two out three requests that we asked for !
We were in room 8522 which was very tired but kept really clean through out our stay,
The beach is lovely and kept really clean but you have to put your towels out at 7:30am every morning if you want a sunbed.
Food in the buffet was good, there was always something to eat. My husband & I always found the lunchtime menu to be better than the dinner menu and the choice of desserts was fantastic, you must try all the different chocolate cakes & ice creams available.
All the staff at the hotel were really nice from the start and we didn't tip anyone until the end of our stay.
We've had a lovely relaxing holiday but the only real down side for my husband & I was that we felt that it was a 55+ persons hotel, were both in our 40's and for our first week we were one of the youngest couples there but thank you all for a lovely holiday.

Dear Customer,
We are so glad to read praises from a senior reviewer of Tripadvisor. Thank you very much for your comments. Yes, building 85 is one of the most demanded, rooms in that area are tired and are the first we will refurbish when we start the works of our standard accommodation. A lot of palapas have been added to the beach and pool area and we will be adding as many more as there is room for them. Sun heat is very intense in the island and shade have to be provided for everyone. Sometimes customers book their shade at both: beach and pool, leaving less for the rest. I would like to take this message to ask all our customers for their understanding and cooperation with this matter. Thank you for the praises on our staff, have already been shared with them.
Looking forward to seeing you again,

This was our first visit to Cuba and I hope it won't be our last! Fist impression was of disappointment because our room was very dark but we changed room and had a room close to the beach with a lovely view.. Room big old fashioned but clean. The food was probably the best we have had in a buffet restaurant, enjoyed the Italian and International restaurant, only one not too keen on Caribbean not enough atmosphere, Had lunch at the grill every day, waiter and chef always helpful. The staff were excellent, couldn't fault any of them, all keen to help in any way they can. We enjoyed the games on the beach especially winning a bottle of rum (still not sure how we won it just kept quiet) The entertainment was good especially the first week, beach party good fun. I must give a special mention for Pepe, we had such a good time with him.
It is one of the friendliest hotels we have ever been to, Met some people. Would we go back I would like to think so at some time in the future. Only negative had to be up early to get a sunbed on the beach, didn't mind too much beautiful part of the day, Carlos always there with a smile and ready to help. Thanks for making it such a good holiday.

Room Tip: The 800's are the best choice.

What better review can we give than to say that we have just returned from our 35th. visit in 6 years and plan to return again in October. The entire staff, office, entertainers, waitstaff, gardeners are exceptionally friendly and efficient. To us they are family. Every visit shows some improvement. The upgrades are complete in all the lagoon rooms, the walk in showers are ultra modern but if you like a bath you should request a room that has one.
The menu at the International has changed, adding more items and for those returnees, you will not walk away hungry.
The Beach BBQ has also just introduced a new menu.
The Italian restaurant (above the Pool Bar) is always a good choice, with menu items other than pasta.
As good as the (3) restaurants are it is hard to miss out on the exceptional display and choices in the buffet. The best food in Cuba.
Wednesday is Cuban Day, do not miss the special lunch at the beach BBQ. Lobster, ribs, chicken etc. plus band, dancers and fashion show with professional models.
For those that like shade around the pool, more cabanas/palapas were added during our last stay.
The entertainment that changes every 15 days now includes aqua shows, a fantastic experience as the dancers appear walking out of the water. Also a must is the Retro Show on Tuesday nights, followed by a good time in the Music Room (Disco) above the reception desk. The Family Five Band in the lobby is good enough to play in any North American Night Club.
From reception to departure, every thing is first class. Any request or problem is quickly attended to. You cannot ask for much more, if you have tried the rest it is time to try the best. Visit Melia Cayo Coco..

Room Tip: All rooms have a similar layout. Lagoon upgrades provide sunsets and tranquillity. Choose others as...

Our first trip to Cuba; if you have not been before you will not know you are in Cuba, Cayo translates to 'Island' and that is what it is a (very) large island the the north of Cuba linked by a causeway to the mainland. A very flat area full of water and vegetation and, as the hotel papers say, 'an ideal breeding ground for mosquito' (we were none too bothered by them). There are no residents on the island, all the hotel workers are bussed in and out daily via the causeway. We are Sandals visitors and are used to their attention to detail; for the price (half the price of Sandals) this place is getting on for a match (although not the finery of Sandals). The food, all day long, a choice of literally anything, cooked well and and much as you wanted, comfort, quietness, absolutely fine.As much water as you request by the bottle. Beach really good, sea very warm, what can one say to negate anything?. Well if the hotel wants to excel they need to obtain some more beach towels. We didn't get any until the end of the second day (along with another 20+ UK visitors) despite asking for them twice (they didn't have any - they were being laundered on the mainland). We were told that if we didn't return towels on the last day we would be charged 15 Cuban Dollars for each towel missing, hence our concern we didn't have any for 2 days (some were 3 days before they got theirs), and we were only there for 7 days. We also had a problem with just one waiter, on being asked for two glasses of water he washed and dried his hands (a good sign) and then went on to preparing some greenery instead of providing the water, and his coffee machine was out of order on two of the days. We did not find a 'tipping culture' although we heard from other UK visitors of housekeepers begging for clothing/footwear. We did tip on the odd occasion for exceptional service, (think his name was) Dago, and evening waiter is exceptional. Entertainment really good. As others have commented we went, by bus, to Pilar Beach (5 Cuban Dollars each for a 'Hop on/Hop off) day return). It is One hr 20 mins away but literally the best beach in Cuba We stopped off on the way back for lunch at the Melia (2nd stop Guillemo? - very poor compares to ours. We also went to Havana on a 'day trip' by air (an hour away), dirty, smelly, poverty, but well worth the trip, we felt as though we need to see Cuba (and we did).
Just another negative, we did request an upper floor with a sea view ........ we ended up on the ground floor with a view of .... vegetation, but, after a 9 hours flight we were not up for a confrontation, the room was just fine (block 83).
To end with well done, just get some more beach towels (would have been excellent stars otherwise). We were blessed with really good weather with storms at night, hot days, very warm nights, bliss. We will be back, promise.

Dear Customer,
Having stayed with Sandals and writing your positive comments means a lot to us. We are so proud that you, a Senior Reviewer share such amazing comments with us and our future guests. We very much appreciate you have taken the time to post your review and let us know your observations on some aspects; we cherish your ideas and suggestions, as they are the ones that make us improving each passing day. Regarding your comment on beach towel issue, I would like to let you and all our customers know that this is not a frequent problem in our hotel since we have happily managed to buy our own laundry equipment so that we send the less amount of linen to mainland. We still need to buy an extra washing machine, but are certainly in process. My apologies for the inconvenience with the waiter, we have addressed the manager in charge to look after it to avoid it from happening again to future visitors. I would also like to apologize for not being able to meet your room request on arrival. Please, email us for your next stay and let us know about every request you may have, we will make sure to look after all your needs this time.

We stayed at the Melia for two weeks to 13th September - my husband and I and my sister and her husband. We opted for lagoon rooms and weren't disappointed with the standard of the accommodation as these rooms have been recently refurbed.
We spent the first week pretty much on the beach - using the handy bus that runs from cayo coco to cayo guillermo which gave us a nice change of scenery - you can go to pilar beach and also visit a few of the other hotels in the area. The beach at the sister hotel (melia cayo Guillermo) is something else and their beach BBQ was very good.
At melia cayo coco we ate during the day at the beach restaurant where we were really well looked after by Amilkar and the chef on the BBQ. We did experience an unpleasant episode with a Canadian couple who complained about Amilkar (after they'd left the hotel, and after he'd looked after them for a whole week!! Cowardly trick!) but honestly his service was amazing.
The buffet restaurant is perfectly fine - and you won't struggle to find something to suit - fresh meat cooked to order, pasta, salads and some lovely desserts.
We ate in all of the al a carte restaurants - and were especially pleased with the international and Italian ones. Entertainment is provided every evening using a combination of the lobby bar and theatre - there's also late night drinking in the music bar, and the lobby bar is 24 hours! Dago in the lobby bar was excellent.
We spent most of our evenings in the sports bar playing pool and passing the time with Joseph and Andres who were good fun and always very attentive.
We took the catamaran trip during the second week and despite is experiencing a massive downpour, we had a ball and were really well looked after - in the bad weather everyone got stuck into the rum!!
We also flew to Havana for the day, and loved it - there are a lot of beggars but do not let that put you off - my tip - go bar hopping and enjoy some mohitos and Cuban music!! It's a long day but totally worth it, and we'd heard some horror stories of 9 hours on the coach each way so I would recommend the flight if you can afford it.
All in all, a great holiday with great staff and beautiful surroundings!!

Room Tip: Go for a lagoon room! Take breakfast outside on the terrace of the main restaurant - tends to be qu...
