We holidayed at the Melia Cayo Coco from 8th to 22nd March and had a very relaxing and enjoyable time.

Our room was spacious, very clean and had a lovely herb garden to the back. The hotel’s grounds are beautifully kept by the wonderful gardeners (who also make hats, flowers, birds and grasshoppers out of palm leaves). The beach is fairly narrow (especially at high tide) but has very white sand and the sea is the most amazing turquoise blue colour.

The food at this hotel is the best we have ever eaten while on an ‘all inclusive’ holiday. The choice was incredible with fresh fish and meat being grilled/barbecued to order. Also, once a week, on the hotel’s Cuban Day, there is freshly grilled lobster (as much as you want) at lunchtime at the Grill Bar. There are three restaurants (Italian, Cuban and International) besides the main buffet restaurant and we ate twice in each. The food in all was excellently cooked and presented. The waiters and waitresses looked after us brilliantly, making sure we had enough to drink with our meals.

There is plenty to do through the day with a hard-working and enthusiastic Animation Team encouraging us to join in with archery, dancing lessons, water aerobics, jewellery making, Spanish lessons, volley ball, bingo and more. Of course, if you just wanted to laze in the sun, they were happy to let you do just that!

Early evening in the lobby bar (where waitresses do a marvellous job) there is different entertainment every evening with terrific piano players, singers, jazz bands and saxophonists. Following this, almost every evening, there is a fabulous dancing show.

We had a truly glorious holiday at the Melia Cayo Coco helped by the exceptionally jovial staff who all (gardeners, room cleaners, bar and waiting staff, reception team, etc.) had smiles for everyone. We enjoyed it so much we have already booked for next year.

P.S. If you like tea (that doesn’t taste like herbal tea), it is worth taking your own tea bags.

We stayed at the Melia for our first kid free getaway. Service was always excellent, the Cuban's are wonderfully romantic, funny and intelligent people. Our stay at this hotel and in Cuba was made special by their unique culture and hospitality. We also made good friends with many other English and Canadian couples. The weather in May/early June is very good. Hot every day but expect sporadic and often intense rain storms and some cooler evenings, but for the most part was sunny and hot. Any later than this and hurricane season is approaching and I would advise avoiding later dates.

There are a lot of crabs around the hotel, they're very timid, but if you don't like 8 legged creatures then stay clear of them! Food was always fresh and superbly cooked, but also monotonous. After two weeks we started to get bored of the same choices, but it was always fresh and well presented. Food after midnight isn't readily available, you have to ask for it from the pool bar, cooked by the security guard! If you like beef burgers and chips after an evening on the booze, then you'll like this. No premium branded drinks, or anything American, so expect local cuisine, local alcohol and local cola. Its drinkable but we mainly stuck with cuban beer and mojitos. You can get real coca cola from the on site shop but its also expensive.

If you like cigars, then buy them outside of the hotel for the best deals. The day trips are really very good, and the cigar factories will offer you cigars, but they're classed as contraband and so don't buy from them. Stick to shops in the main cities and you will get a good deal. The best deal I had was for Monte Cristo and Romeo et Juliet cigars from the airport where they were very cheap. Recommend a trip to Havana which is a long trip over three days and is incredible but be prepared. Cuba is a very poor country, and poverty is rife. When they see a tourist you will be harassed, but remain polite and walk away and you will be fine. I never felt threatened like I did in Egypt.

Mosquitos can be a problem at night, if your susceptible to insect bites, then steer clear. The Melia is located on a lagoon where they breed and can be a problem on hot and sticky nights. High power repellent required here. No cockroaches which is another plus, the hotel is expertly maintained and very clean. The rooms are spacious, if not a little dated but I think there are also plans to update them.

Overall, this is one of the best holidays I've ever been on. The price was spot on, even travelling first class on the return journey, and for the money you won't find a more economical long haul trip than to Cuba. You often get what you pay for, but that isn't the case here. It was good quality all round, great value and we will definitely return. According to the locals the best time of year is November - February when the weather is very hot, and I've met many people who visit regularly at Xmas time. This seems to be a very popular time of year, but also when the insects are out in force and prices go up.

You won't go wrong with this hotel, it's one of the best on the island, and the Cayo's have an independent climate which makes them ideal. Get out and about, visit some local towns and experience Cuban life to its fullest. For one of the worlds most impoverished countries, their culture is enriched with music, a fantastic outlook, amazing history, and a stunningly beautiful country.

We chose this resort so we could meet my relatives who live in Canada and it was one we could all do at the same time, but we couldn't have chosen better. I am surprised this hotel gets any negative comments, we loved everything about it from the service, the food, the activities, the staff and the excursions. I espesially loved the dive experience, Tony Mantana is the man!! The animation team were so lively, friendly and funny, we laughed the whole 2 weeks, loved them all. We met some amazing new friends from both the UK and Canada everyone was really friendly. I could go on but I think it is enough to say we have just booked to go back next year, and I can't wait. :D

I'm not sure how this resort gets so many amazing reviews. For the exact same price in Mexico or the Dominican you get SO much more.
After reading all the review for days i couldn't wait!
We stayed from March 26th until Feb 5th,

I would say there wasn't anything negative, but this resort is average at best.

The standard rooms are dated and not enjoyable to come back too after a day in the sun. The rooms are pink and beat up. Cracks all over, paint falling off. Sheets that are hard as a rock. Our "backyard" was cigarette butts, broken glass and empty plastic cups all over. It wasn't cleaned the entire week. It was actually disgusting and we couldn't sit on our chairs in the back because of how gross it was.

We attempted to watch TV once in our room around day 4 for half and hour, and our cable in our room was very fuzzy and unwatchable. Oh well we weren't on vacation for TV!

The beach was fantastic. You could always get a chair anytime of the day. The water was warm and on calm days you can see fish everywhere swimming around. You walk to the right for 5 minutes and it's basically a private beach for miles. I can't stress enough how nice the beach was.

I'm not sure about the pool area since we have a pool at home we didn't "hang out" near the pool.

We thought the food was great all three meals. Amazing Hash browns, bacon and great eggs - what more do you want for breakfast? If you did they have lots of it!

Lunch was best at the beach. Absolutely incredible hamburgers. I would be impressed with that burger if i ordered at home...that's saying something.
The lunch grill at the beach - yum. How can you top Chicken, ribs and steak on the grill outside everyday for lunch. AMAZING!

The A La Carts were very average and almost boring. We did enjoy the Italian - the Chicken Cordon blue was great. In fact we went twice for the same meal. We tipped our waiter $5 and asked to come back and he said yes.

On that note it was scary and weird to see all these people not tipping at the restaurants. Get some class. Many times we would see groups of 4-8 people leave the table without leaving a few dollars. What a shame for these workers....

Would we go back? no way - Just because the food was great and the beach was great so are most resorts.

You get so much more for the same price at other resorts. I don't understand all the repeat visitors....

I would say half the resort was age 20-40 and the other half was 40-60 with a few "older" people.

This trip occurred from March 21 - 28. After having stayed in November we enjoyed it so much we went back again. Adults only is a big draw to this resort of course! Again, for someone just arriving they might find the look of the hotel a bit dated but the people are what make this resort worthing of coming back again and again. They all, from the gardeners and the maids to the bartenders and servers to the management team make sure the guests are looked after and any concerns are addressed in a timely manner. This resort has the best food in Cuba we have had and have travelled to a number of resorts in the country. Charles makes the best eggs at breakfast and always has a huge smile on his face and Florencia can't be beat for cooking banana crepes in the evenings. Yusmilikys is the best server in the buffet at night and always is happy to see everyone! We tried the Italian a la carte and it is was wonderful - we were a group of 8 and everyone enjoyed their meals and the service was lovely. On the last night we were accomodated and given a table in the International even though we had been told that there was nothing available. This restaurant was awesome and was a true "fine dining" experience. As someone with celiac - they also ensured that modifications and substitutions were made so that my meal was gluten free. It was great! I highly recommend this restaurant. We did a trip out on the Catamaran from the resort and for 15 pesos per person they will take you out to the reef to snorkel for an hour. Some amazing fish out there! A special shout out to the new Food and Beverage Manager, Jorges, who was ever vigilant in all his areas and was very pleasant to deal with. We hope to be back again in December!
