“More than expected”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 12, 2012

We travelled to the Melia Cayo Coco November 28 - December 5. Upon first arrival we thought the resort appeared a bit dated however this did not cause any issues. The staff at this resort were the absolute best we have ever come across in the Carribean - from Edith our chambermaid to the amazing gardening staff who presented us with palm animals everyday, to Anelise in the pool bar area, Habir the lifeguard, Yamil and Omar in the buffet, Florencia who cooked the bananas every night, Mario and Yasmilinka in the evening buffet and so many more I can't possibly name them all here. It was also great to see the Management Team (the general manager and the food and beverage manager) constantly visible and keeping an eye on everything. The food at this resort is the best we have had in Cuba. I note one reviewer talked about the lack of beach - we had this for a couple days due to the high tide however by early afternoon there was much more beach available. The resort can't control the tides or the wind! We are already planning our trip next fall and can't wait to return to this resort.

Stayed at this resort Nov 11-18 and had a very relaxing time.
I have been traveling to Cuba since 2007 and the Melia Cayo Coco has always been a resort that has caught my interest, an adult only, 5 star resort.
Overall the resort was very clean, food was good and plentiful. Beach was narrow due to the tides being high in the morning but by the early afternoon you could see that they were getting wider.
We went to 2 ala cartes, the Italian and the International. Both excellent!!
It was hard to find anywhere to sit at the pool area due to the fact that they were taken up pretty quickly in the morning. Not to matter as we are not big pool people in the first place as we would rather spend our days at the beach.
The nightly entertainment was really good, both in the piano bar and on the stage.
Resort is well laid out and has lots of fauna and beautiful vegetation.
I would not hesitate to come back. Lots of picks and videos on my personal website at:

www.yo-yo-web.com/Trippers/Melia_Cayo_Coco_12.html

Good resort for couples and for those that want a quite relaxing vacation.

Also, a couple who we traveled with experienced problems in their room with intermittent electrical outages for three days. I would like to management for compensating them by upgrading them to a room on the lagoon.
Hope to return soon.

The Melia Cayo Coco was absolutly fabulous! We travelled to the Melia in the first week of December 2012. The service was great, and the staff could not do enough to make your stay with them memorable! Upon arrival, check in was efficient and friendly. The resort is within 15 minutes of the airport which meant a short bus trip. Grounds were clean and well groomed. The food in the buffet and the beach restaurant was five star plus!! An entire selection of fish and seafood, along with pasta and any another meat selection you desired, grilled to your liking! The beach restaurant offered BBQ chicken and ribs daily, with grilled lobster on Cuba day! The standard room was more than sufficient with all the ammneties you needed. Rooms were cleaned and made up with great towel art every day! Had a problem with the A/C which was repaired within 20 minutes of calling for service! The beach was quiet, and long walks were enjoyed daily. Pool area was busy, and sometimes it was hard to find a lounge chair. The entertainmnet was stellar, with great theater shows nightly, and acomplished musicians in the lobby every evening to entertain you. No complaints, other than than the beds were a touch hard, but tolerable. Looks like another trip to the Melia Cayo Coco for us in April 2013!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 10, 2012

We stayed at Melia during the first week of December. Overall, it was an amazing vacation.

Rather than telling you too much about our vacation (which was the same high quality as what countless other posters are raving about), we thought we'd leave you a few helpful tips. We looked at TripAdvisor extensively before we went and found so many valuable pointers. As they say, pay it forward!

** AIRPORT (Jardines del Rey) - Clean, efficient, modern **
Just a 20 minute bus ride to Melia from the airport

** BEACH - Great! Lots of chairs **

** BOOKING A LA CARTES - Book at 9AM Sunday morning for whole week **
Hotel told us to book between 10AM and 3PM on the day of... Guy taking the bookings said he took them from 9AM and could book up to 7 days in advance. International and Italian were excellent, we didn't try the Cuban/Caribbean restaurant.

** CIGARETTE LIGHTERS - Don't bring expensive ones **
Though you can fly with them from Canada, Cuba DOES NOT allow passengers to take lighters on their person or in their carry-on baggage. You'll be forced to throw them out at the airport security on your way home.

** CLOCKS - There are almost NONE anywhere on the resort. **
It's great to be on "vacation time," but the restaurants, activities, and shows, etc. still operate on a schedule.... Without knowing the time, you might miss a meal! No alarm clocks in the guest rooms either. We used our cell phones on airplane mode as a clock (bonus: 6-7 days of battery life since the antenna was turned off).

** COFFEE - Consistently inconsistent, ask for "black coffee" and hope for the best **
Coffee at the buffet in the morning was inconsistent and usually weak. The Cuban idea of "Coffee with Milk" is not like we were used to in Canada, it was an equal ratio of coffee and milk. It'd be like ordering a small coffee at Tim's with 6 milks. Ask for black coffee and instruct the server that you only want a little bit of milk. A few servers also thought that Black Coffee = Americano. This was not a bad thing since the Americanos were excellent, but be warned if you don't like strong coffee. The cappucinos were also very good.

** COURTESY ROOM - Be prepared **
If you fly out at night (like we did), the Melia offers a courtesy room for a quick shower and to freshen up before you leave for the airport. This was a nice feature, though the Courtesy room we were given was obviously a previous guest's yet-to-be-cleaned room and bathroom. Though it was nice to shower after a day in the sun, we had different expectations of what we were going to. The room was a 5 minute walk (each way) from the front desk and they expected 2 people to shower, change, and be back within 25 minutes.

** DEPARTURE TAX - 25 CUCs per person... MUST BE CASH!! **

** ELECTRICAL OUTLETS - 220 V... Be careful **
Most modern plugs will be able to handle any voltage between 110-220V. If you're not sure, ask.

** EVENING ENTERTAINMENT - Outstanding **
Every show was very high quality. Certainly something you could expect to pay for at a local theatre or casino in Canada. Show starts at 9:50PM, usually only 1 hour.

** EXCHANGE RATE - A bit better at the hotel **
1 CAD = 0.94 CUC in first week of December (airport offered 0.93 CUC)

** FOOD - As good as everyone says! **
Be careful with the seafood paella prepared at the beach bbq. We had one small illness, but it luckily didn't ruin our trip. They make the same paella some nights in the buffet, so best to try it there where the ingredients are stored at proper temperatures.

** INTERNET - Don't bother **
Our rep advised us that if we wanted to access the internet, it was important to take a strong drink. "By the time the computer has turned on and the webpage has loaded, you'll be done the drink and you won't care about using the internet anymore!"

** LAGOON SMELL - Minor, not enough to worry about **

** MOSQUITOES - Not many, but more noticeable after a rain storm **
December is not a typical high season for bugs, but we noticed many more after a heavy rain shower. The hotel acknowledges that with so much natural standing water around the property, mosquitoes are bad during traditional bug season (but it says they spray twice daily). Bring bug spray in case...

** POOL - Very nice **
Saw another reviewer refer to people getting up at "stupid o'clock" to reserve pool chairs and this is a fitting description. Especially with the beach being windy, we were not able to get any chairs around 11am (though the staff are happy to bring some up from the beach). I went down around 7am a couple of days, and 60% of chairs already had towels on them... 2% of chairs actually had people on them

** ROOMS - Ask for renovated **
We booked a Lagoon View Room. The view was lovely, but our room was not nearly as nice as some of the lagoon (or standard) rooms that had been recently renovated. The room was generally clean and everything worked fine, but there were a lot of signs of ageing and "wear and tear." We had no issues with the mattress firmness and the King bed was definitely larger than a King in Canada. One HUGE mattress.

** SERVERS / STAFF - As good as everyone says **
The servers and staff at Melia are one of the main reasons for the resort's 5 star rating. They're all excellent, helpful, and genuinely happy. Management and Supervisors seem to be everywhere with their clipboards and 2-way radios just keeping everything organized. What a well-run ship!

** TIPS - No pressure **
We tipped frequently, but only because we wanted to... never felt pressured. Giving servers 1 or 2 CUCs early in the week was enough to be remembered and service was always excellent. Thanks Yamil, Omar, Orlando (lobby bar), Jordan, Rafael, Juan, Jose, Pepe (CooOoOooconuts), Peter, and so many others!

Room Tip: Try to request a renovated room

My boyfriend and I chose this hotel on recommendation from a few people, and because it is an adult only hotel there are no children; which makes it very relaxing and romantic. This was our first holiday abroad together and we are so glad that we chose this hotel for such a memorable holiday.

The transfer is only approx 20 mins from the Cayo Coco Airport. As there were 3 coach loads of travellers arriving at the same time as us there was no stopping off at other hotels on the way which was ideal. Although even if that was the case, The Melia is the first hotel for drop offs and the last for collection to/from the airport. Maria is the Thomas Cook Rep and was lovely

Best Bits..
The staff...all staff we came in to contact with were friendly, polite, accommodating and some were great fun...from Violeta for communication via email when i emailed the hotel asking things before we even got there, to Margie our lovely maid who kept our room tidy and with new towel art daily, Anaelise who worked in the Buffet restaurant and the pool bar (21yr old university student) very good at her job, Yanelli the Lobby Bar waitress, and the night shift Lobby Barman (kicking myself for not remembering his name!), Mavi one of the entertainers and Pepe and Carlos for the daily Coconuts filled with rum!!

The Buffet has an endless supply of fresh food on offer for breakfast, lunch and dinner...from Lester’s amazing freshly cooked to order omelettes in the morning, through to Fernando’s freshly cooked fish of an evening. Multiple different cooking stations, with everything from pasta, fish/chicken/meat, crepes

There are 3 A La Carte restauranst;., Italian, Caribbean and International. You can book into these once, per restaurant per week. Although the choice is much better in the buffet restaurant, it’s nice to be in a quieter restaurant and served food to your table, however you are served with drinks at your table in the buffet too. These restaurants are slightly more romantic.

Entertainment all day long, from aqua aerobics in the pool or sea (depending on weather), Yoga, pool side fun and afternoon volley ball, to Pepe and Carlos coming to the pool and beach daily with their rum filled coconuts...all part of all inclusive however we tipped him everyday..all the staff are so humble and grateful for tips. It is customary however it is not expected, 1-2 pesos.
The evening entertainment isn't everyone's cup of tea but all the staff work so hard to put on some really good shows.

The way all the staff at this hotel treat you, puts English customer service to shame and people at home could learn a thing or two!

On talking to other guests who had been before, we learnt that the staff are grateful of anything you give to them, whether it be colouring books and pens or sweets/chocolate you take for their children, or your left over toiletries (these simple things we take for granted are really expensive for them to buy). We didn't drink all of the drinks in our room fridge which was topped up daily (2 beers, a coke and a lemonade and a bottle of water) we gave the excess cans to the gardeners who were greatly appreciative and even made us a hat and bird with a flower!

The only food stuffs sold in the on-site shop were Pringles and some biscuits....don’t expect a great variety of choice...so if you’ve a bit of a sweet tooth...take some provisions with you!! ;-)

Trips..We took the 3 day/2 night trip to Havana, including tickets to the world famous Tropicana club. This was approx £430 (all in) for two people. It included your transfer, guide, hotel half board and tickets to Tropicana. Our Tour Guide who took us to Havana, Jose was brilliant and very knowledgeable. It was a brilliant trip and we made some good friends. Tropicana is a MUST with a free ¼ bottle of Havana Club rum pp and a cigar each for the men. (research this club). The only downside is that it takes 9hrs by coach  however this included a couple of toilet stops, a lunch stop and a stop at the Che Guevara monument and museum. If you like coach trips then this shouldn’t bother you at all, but i don’t travel well so this wasn’t great for me, but once in Havana and sat in Tropicana, it made it all worth it.

We also went on the speed boat trip which is brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable. You get to drive your own speed boat through the mangroves and get to snorkel at the other end. This was approx £30 each.

This hotel is a must and we highly recommend you visit. If it wasn’t for wanting to see more of the world on our future holidays, we would definitely go back, and just for the hotel and the staff (doubt we’ll find this excellence anywhere else again). Very worthy of 5 stars

the only downside which to be fair didn't spoil our holiday and wasn't anyone's fault..was the mosquitos..the biting lil swines! we took garlic tablets before and during holiday, 100% deet spray, wrist bands, room sprays etc, the works but we still got bitten :(
if you're susceptible to getting bitten, take everything available on the market!! it does help although in my case didn't completely prevent.

Room Tip: we were in block 64 which was a nice distance away from everything but equally not too far to walk t...

Just got back from our 4th visit to this excellent resort (Nov 23rd to Dec 7th) and cannot praise the hotel enough, which by the way is now recognised as the 5th best hotel in the whole of Cuba, and aiming to be No.1 according to Santiago the new general manager who we met in the billiard bar one evening, a very nice man who seems determined to do his very best for the hotel. Nice chatting to you Santiago.
From leaving the airport and meeting Maria the rep - a very good rep as well - to the very last gardener in the resort, everybody recognised us and greeted us as if we were long lost family members.
Our room wasn't quite ready when we arrived, but that was no problem as it gave us some time to get re-acquainted with some of the staff. When we finally got to our room we got a knock on the door and were presented with a bottle of rum, a very nice touch. We were lucky enough to get placed in one of the upgraded lagoon rooms, the upgrade being a much improved bathroom, the bath having been replaced by a walk in shower, a new toilet & bidet and the whole bathroom tiled top to bottom in much more modern tiles, very pleasant indeed. Also the somewhat antiquated TV had been replaced by a modern flat screen TV mounted on the wall at the foot of the bed.
The beach was a little disappointing this year, no fault of the hotel obviously, but just the after effects of hurricane Sandy the previous month. It will return to its former glory in the fullness of time I am sure.
The food, what can you say about it. We liked it on each of the previous times we have been there, but this year the level has gone up several notches, especially the buffet restaurant, fantastic choice and very good quality as well, only surpassed by the 'special lunch' we enjoyed with Eidel & Violetta (Customer service & Quality managers at the resort) and several other repeat visitors, one couple (Bob & Cath from Canada) having been to the Melia a staggering 31 times, that has got to tell you something about the place. We visited all of the a-la-carte restaurants, all of which are very good quality, and well worth a visit. The only slight criticism being the set menu in the International, very good quality and taste, but no choice, you get what you are given.
Each time we visit the resort we notice small improvements, they actually placed another 2 TV's in the billiard bar while we were there this time.
For us, and probably the reason we keep on going back is the staff, what a fantastic set of people they are. From the general manager down to the cleaners, everyone is so friendly, not one person will go by without a friendly 'Hola', a high five or a handshake. The animation team do a fantastic job of trying to get people involved in all sorts of activities, dance lessons, vollyball, archery, tennis lessons, almost anything, but not to much pressure if you don't want to participate, or if like us just to damn lazy. Amazing people, every last one of them, we cannot praise them enough.
Special mentions must go to gardeners Rolando (aka Shrek) & Fillipe, both are now very good friends. Buffet restaurant waiter (this year, he was beach bar barman last year) Yamil, never seen a man with such a wide smile when he sees us, his face positively lights up. Italian restaurant waiter, barman, coffee maker, bar tender (he does everything) Yanio, what a character. Coooooooconut man Pepe, brightened up our day no end with his banter around the pool. Last but not least Orlando and Joseph in the Billiard bar, we have got to know these 2 so well we have come to regard them as part of the family. Great pair of lads.
Fantastic holiday, just off to the travel agents now to book our 5th visit for the same time next year.

Our visit, Nov 18 to Dec 02, was again outstanding. I say again because we have been to Melia Cayo Coco as many times as there are days in this month !!!!! We are only allowed to post a review every 3 months.

Being a ‘returnee’ has many benefits, upgrades, special drinks in the rooms, flowers, a special Managers Lunch, to name a few. I cannot list any negatives and it is obvious that we rate this resort as second to none.
We would like to give a special mention to a few.

Welcome to the new manager, Santiago Innerarity. He has already made a good impression on his first few days.

To YOA, (the lady responsible for the flower arrangements.) Your display of Gladiolas in front of the Melia Cayo Coco sign in the lobby has to be the most photographed item at the resort. Great background for ‘People Memories’ Well done.

To The Family Jazz Quintet. A world class group, the standing ovation from a packed lobby was truly justified.

To the Artistic Director Leonardo, Manager Alain and choreographer Yadira. The new Retro show and Pool show are as good as it gets. Please thank all your dancers.

To the Magician, well worth watching things appear and disappear. Now that’s Magic.

To all the Animation crew. Well done, you make a vacation complete. Special mention to Reiner and Mavi for the new craft and painting lessons.

To all those reading this, join in the fun, you will find no better.
Happy to answer questions on Facebook. Bob Haiselden
