My boyfriend and I traveled to Cuba in late April. This was a good time to go as it was the "windy" season. If you wanted to read a book on the beach you might want to take your KOBO or your pages will turn all by themselves. By the pool it was PERFECT...so perfect we both looked like lobsters by the end of the day even with sunscreen. The breeze kept us cool enough to not notice the heat!

I can't say enough about the staff and how hard they work to make sure your stay is memorable! Two of the servers that work in the main buffet area were very pleasant and stopped to chat so that we could practice our Spanish (they were VERY tolerant!) The room staff were great and when we needed something it was there fast!

The beach was extremely clean and the sand was like walking in soft butter. Flags indicated on the beach what kind of day it was...if you could swim, too rough to swim, it's a pool day, or head to the local town of Moron (we say moron they say morON) for sight seeing.

If you want to see parts of the "real" cuba with the safety of a tour go to Moron or Ciego de Avila and see where the Cuba's live and play. The people are warm and friendly! Take a catamaran and swim at the world's second largest reef. Have lunch on the boat and relax like the Cuban's know how! Hasta manana!

One more thing...if you are used to BEACHES or SANDLES resorts this may not be for you but if you want to go back in time (a little) and remember what it is like to relax you won't go wrong with staying at SOL!

We will be heading back to visit with our nuevo amigos!

Room Tip: Depending what you are looking for all the rooms seem to have a good view of the pool area or the wa...

Pretty location, attentive staff, lovely beach and food that is best described as adequate and plentiful.

You may enjoy the drive across the causeway to the Cayo Coco if you like ocean wildlife, pretty sunsets, or marine engineering - it's about 30 minutes of a combination of those things.

Beach is very pretty, but showing signs of severe erosion in places. Depending on prevailing winds and your tendency to drama queen freak outs, seaweed on the beach may be an issue for you. (Seriously, if nature bothers you that much, stay by the pool.)

Rooms were clean, fairly well maintained and quiet. Some only have showers; some have full baths. Save yourself the trouble of moving rooms. If you ask for the room you want before check in (via email, phone, text), your chances of being accommodated are better than if you wait until you arrive and complain about the room you get.

The dining room is unfortunately air conditioned, rather than being open-air. However, in the morning and at lunch, there is the option to dine outside. Take advantage of the shaded patio. Seriously, you are vacationing in paradise, FFS.

Lunch was far tastier at the waited table beach-side grill than at the main dining area, and the beach cats will visit hoping you might "accidentally" drop something. A separate snack bar by one of the pools provided all the deep-fried stuff a kid could desire. Have a Cuban sandwich! What, are you afraid the communism might spread to your thighs?

There is not much to do on this fairly isolated island other than go to the fake marketplace a few kilometres away. Take the shuttle bus or a taxi, or you can walk, you lazy tourist. Climb the "tower". Browse half-heartedly through the usual tourist crap. Have a beer. Have several. You've got all bloody day.

We travelled to Sol Cayo Coco from Aug 18-25. You name it, we loved it. The food was good, the staff was amazing, beaches were breath-taking. Advice: go visit Playa Larga, a short walk left (when facing the ocean) - one of the most beautiful beaches. It's open to locals, but there are a lot of chairs and a bar reserved for people staying at Sol Cayo Coco right on the beach.
And do the Jeep Safari excursion! We could not have been happier with it.
We highly recommend this place and plan on going back ASAP.

Review-Sol Cayo Coco-August, 2013

My wife and I just returned from spending three weeks in August at the Sol Cayo Coco resort. This was our fourth time there and we had a fantastic time once again. This resort is small and located off the mainland of Cuba, on the island of Cayo Coco which is joined together by a long causeway.
We travelled with West Jet and had no problems with our flight going or coming back, the flights were very enjoyable and on time. We left from Ottawa to Toronto and then on to Cayo Coco, connections went very smoothly. The only problem that we had was when we came back and landed in Toronto, they told us that our baggage would be located on conveyor belt number 8 but after waiting a very long time we found out that our baggage was located on conveyor belt number 5 where another 5 flights also had baggage off loaded there which lead to a very confused and dangerous situation. This situation should be avoided, very frustrating and not very good customer service.
Once we arrived at the resort we checked into our room without any problems and everything in it was clean and in its place. While we were there the maid did a wonderful job of keeping it clean, we had clean towels and sheets as we requested them, there is a little card for each and you just have to use them to get clean linens. The furniture is well worn but clean and comfortable.
The food at the resort is excellent you can always find something to eat and they do their best to have various choices for breakfast, lunch and supper. They have a new Executive Chef since the last time we were there. His name is David and he has tried to add new things to the menu and has worked very hard to ensure that the buffet is always replenished in short time. He is always looking for suggestions, so if you see something you don’t like or have any other suggestions he is always willing to listen.
There a number of places to eat rather than going to the buffet all the time. The Beach Bar grill serves excellent hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza during lunch time. The Beach Restaurant has a variety of grilled food items. David the Executive Chef is trying to make improvements to the quality and menu. You can also eat at the Pool Bar and grill they have wonderful French fries and also hamburgers, pizza, sandwiches and they also make fresh donuts just to the side of the grill. They also service sandwiches at the main lobby bar, so with this choice you can eat all over the resort and enjoy yourself.
They have two beaches one in front and one to the side, the front beach is excellent and they have a lot of lounge chairs around but of course if you go later in the day it might be hard to find one. The water is beautiful and when we were there we were able to go in every day except one when it rained. They clean the beach every morning. A tractor goes up and down the breach raking up the weeds and the people looking after the chairs rake every morning to make sure it is clean and safe. You might find weeds during the day but that is nature and there is nothing you can do about that. The side beach is also nice but a little shallow and goes out for a long way, excellent for kids or just walking in the water.
The biggest asset though are the staff. Everyone who works there will greet you with a huge smile, kiss, and hand shake or pat on the back, they really know how to make you feel at home. The staff working in the buffet are all willing to go the extra mile to make sure you have everything you need but of course they are only human and can’t be everywhere at once so a little patience goes a long way and also a thank you once in a while doesn’t hurt. They work hard for what they get. It would be hard to mention all of the serves by name but one person who stood out was Yulka she was always pleasant and willing to help you out. She treated you like family.

The Customer Service Team at the resort are the best that we have come across. They are always there to help you out no matter what the problem is. They try hard to find a solution to everyone problems. You see them all over the resort helping clients with one thing or another. Sometimes they bear the brunt of client’s frustrations because of the weather, nothing to do, trips take a long time, hot and tired family members, you name it they get a complaint about it. In many case there is nothing that they can do about it, they do their best and can’t do the impossible. So if you have a problem don’t wait until you get home to complain about it on Trip Advisor or somewhere else. Take the time to go and see one of the Client Service Team and I am sure that you will be happy that you did.
There are some things that are frustrating about the resort but that goes for any resort that you might go to in the world. Just remember you are not at home and things will not be the same, you are in a different country with a different climate and they have different food and drink products, that is why with go.
There are also some things that really bother me and they have nothing to do with the resort or the staff, it is with the clients themselves. Just to give you a couple of examples there are the clients who like to slam their room doors coming and going not taking into consideration that other clients might be resting or sick. There are the clients who go into the buffet for lunch with wet bathing suits on, leaving a wet chair for the next client. There are the clients who think that the buffet is only for them not taking into consideration line ups and the fact that someone one is trying to get food from the serving dishes while they push their way to the front.
This resort is an excellent place to just relax and enjoy the beach and other activities. This resort is not a place to go if you want to party all night long. It is a small resort with everything close at hand, a great place for families and people who just want to enjoy life away from the day to day stresses of life.
My wife and I have been to Cuba eleven times now and we have been back to the Sol Cayo Coco four of those times. We will continue to go back and will recommend this resort to all are friends and family. We like to think of it as a small gem in the Caribbean. Enjoy your visit.

We arrived back from our 12th time to this hotel on Friday and once again it was an amazing holiday. We traveled as a family of 3 (one 15 year old) and two family friends as well - it was their first time to Cuba and they loved it!

We arrived being greeted my all of the staff who are like our second family now but we also saw a lot of new faces in the animation team... who came over and introduced themselves and made the effort to come and speak to us every day. The new animation team boss is doing a great job and is always positive and making the staff happy and feel comfortable around him. There was a lot more activities going on through the day which is nice to see and the staff are always trying to get people involved but aren't pushy if you don't want to join in.
Thank you to Yianni, Roly, Rudy, Raymond, Yunet, Rene, Yasmany, Paris, Maikel, Toqui, Dayron, Randy, Nona and the rest of the entertainment staff
and also the dancers Yudi, Juan Carlos, Yelo, Yusmir, Pablo, Yeni, Eliot, Leo, Sussell and the choreographer Valdo for putting on amazing shows every night and helping out with entertainment through the day after practice.
The pool party was amazing and everyone enjoyed it!

There were some British people who caused trouble while we were there and they had been drinking from really early in the morning and the staff did everything they could to try and resolve this... but this was by no means the hotels fault and they dealt with it brilliantly.
We met a really nice group of English people though who were a great laugh.

It is much better when more staff are allowed to stay in the disco as they get people up dancing and there is a better atmosphere in there. The bat cave on a Tuesday night is an amazing experience as well and I would recommend doing that.

The bar staff Orlando, Dioni, Junior, Maikel, Luis and Roly were always working hard no matter which bar they were on, and the waiters and waitresses in the restaurants were fantastic as well.

Also a massive thank you to Dianelys in customer services who looked after us and organized a surprise cake for Amy's birthday at the pool party.

I would recommend going to this hotel but if you're a Brit who wants clubbing every night and to start chanting and causing trouble... Stay closer to home.

Thank you once again for an amazing holiday... see you next year!

I usually read trip advisor before booking a holiday to check out what people think and their experiences whilst staying there. I read the good, the bad and the ugly about this hotel however due to the overall rating and there being more good reviews than bad I decided to book this hotel through Thomas Cook- a year before may I add, it wasn't a last minute 'you get what you pay for' holiday. Myself and seven others paid alot of money to stay here - between us we paid nearly £9000 for two weeks. How misinformed and trusting was I!

As I write this review I know that there will be the hard core serial Sol Cayo Coco holiday maker foaming at the mouth ready to write my review off as 'being too picky,' 'not knowing that Cuba is similar to a 3rd world country,' 'a what do you expect your in Cuba,' ' it's what you make of it' etc.

We are working class people who have saved our hard earned cash for two years who were looking forward to going on holiday to a family orientated resort to have fun, relax and be a little bit spolit e.g. not having to cook the tea, wash up etc.

Jessop-10's review is an accurate and truthful account of what it was like. I can vouch for this because I was there at the same time!! Those individuals who are writing reviews stating they had a wonderful time are people who are habitual regulars, who have been on numerous occasions to this hotel. These people are easily identifible to the Cuban staff as they wear different coloured bands, thus receiving a better service as they keep certain members of staff supplied with alcohol throughout their stay. These people set up residence beside the pool and hog/dominate the sunbeds and the pool bar- that's why people are on mission impossible when trying to obtain a sunbed post 6am in the morning or get a drink at the bar without queuing. Newcomers have to wear yellow bands- staff know you are new, they know you don't know the 'tip me and I'll do it' game that you have to play to get cutlery, get a drink, get a cup of coffee etc so don't bother with you.

As mentioned in previous reviews this resort has been reduced to a lager loutish mentality, where alcoholic drinking games around the pool during the day are classed as entertainment by the animation team-I witnessed a young mum with a child on her hip competing in a 'who can suck a pint of lager through a straw the quickest' competition. Not quite what you expect at a 'family' resort hotel! I was ashamed and disgusted when Brits and other nationals were egging on a drunk and filiming him jumping into a pool from a sun lounger at a pool party. I couldn't believe that I was witnessing this kind of bullying. This was not only dangerously unsafe for the man in question but for the people who were in the pool at the time!! It was a wonder no one was seriously injured. At the same night time pool party there were young people who were not from the hotel (some had stripped off to their underwear) were explicitly gyrating like a scene from R n B video until the early hours in the morning. Almost forgot the staff were also joining in all of this too!! Would you want your impressionable teenage son (children imitate what they see) to be watching all of this?? Jessop-10 is not exaggerating - the noise level it was deafening and I could only imagine what it was like for those with babies or young children who were trying to get them to sleep.

The animation team are not interested in newcomers to the hotel, they seem to flock around habitual regulars who write false reviews on here. As for the bar staff woe be tide you if you dare, as a women to go and ask for more than two drinks whilst there is only one male bar staff on and cuban baseball is on the tv (every night in the lobby bar). I was spoken to aggressively and treated in a demeaning manner infront of several male guests who were (you guessed it) also queuing for drinks. All I can think of as an explanation for this kind of behaviour is that it was 11pm at night, he was the only person working behind the bar and he was being hammered by guests for drinks and couldn't cope so he took his frustrations out on me rather than the men standing at the bar- I've had better service in a nightclub in Manchester and Liverpool on a Saturday night. I spoke to the manager who asked me to speak to another manager...not sure how this was dealt with as had no feedback.

We visited both sister hotels Trypp and Cayo Guillermo and realised what we were missing out on.

I do believe a holiday is what you make of it so after week we absconded to the Sol Cayo Guillermo- yes we did have to pay but it was well worth it, yes it's a little dated and has some issues but compared to the Sol Cayo Coco it was heavenly! Here's why...

1) Beach towels were on tap- never ran out. Why is there an issue with lack of beach towels at the Sol Cayo Coco??
2) Yes there were the get up as early as you can to get the best sunbeds bridgade but we didn't have a problem getting a suitable poolside sun lounger or beach lounger no matter what time of the day.
3) Queuing for grilled meat, pancakes, fish and pasta was no more than 10 minutes at the most busiest meal times.
4) No matter what time of day or night staff ( bar included) were genuine, friendly, helpful people.
5) Animation team had organised and advertised activities.
6) The soft drinks e.g. Cola etc were not as watered down...you could actually taste it!
7) Alcoholic drinks didn't strip the lining from your throat...we were served international brands at no extra cost.
8) Restaurants, pool, resort big enough to cater for the amount of guests staying there.

I could go on and on and on...

We met some genuine Cuban people during our stay here, who I sincerely empathise with. So glad we went on the trips and got to see 'the real Cuba.' It's a beautiful country with stunning beaches and countryside, fabulous music and a fascinating history.

Would we go back to Cayo Guillermo? Yes, we would if we were to stay in the Cayos again.
