Hotel Sol Cayo Coco

We went to this hotel, at the end of January '13, with friends for 2 weeks. Last year we were in the Blau Varadero and we have previously stayed at the Melia Cayo Santa Maria. In view of this and the Tripadvisor reviews we had high hopes. We have been to Cuba 8 times now and accept that standards are different to other Caribbean locations. Our hopes were not fulfilled and we found ourselves asking to move hotels after 4 days. I'll list the pro's and con's:

Pros

Beach through gate is beautiful
Friendly staff
Duanne's Cocktail Bar in lobby (plastic cups)

Cons

Food - Luke warm, tasteless and very poor quality
A la carte - beach restaurant with a table cloth
Scruffy decor all over hotel and in room
Bath painted and yellowing
Plastic cups instead of glasses at night
No coffee in restaurant for 3 days
Fruit juice - powder
31 Jan - leak into cupboard clothes soaked
- no coffee in lobby bar
- ceiling collapsed in lobby toilets
- waiters stood chatting in lobby bar
No mini bar
Mugs in room but no coffee machine
Mould on towel on day one
Marks on towels and bed linen
Holes in bed sheets

After 7 days we upgraded our last 7 days to the Melia Cayo Guillermo. What a great decision that was!

We stayed at this hotel from 18 Jan - 1st Feb and had a fantastic time. All the staff are brilliant and so friendly. You didn't have to tip them to get the same service but they really appreciate it when you do.they are paid low wages but work there hearts out. Check in was quick and the room was good. Some decoration needed but we have found this to be the case in Dominican and Jamaica as well. Quiet and comfortable was the main thing. Beaches are outstanding. Food was the usual all inclusive stuff but always found something i liked. Queues were a bit of a pain at times for some of the stations but normal so you get used to it. Sunbeds can be at a premium at times especially on the right hand beach so worth getting there early. Entertainment was not bad, seen better but they put alot of effort in and some shows were very good. The grounds are very nice and well looked after. Didn't have any problems with bugs which was nice. Not much more i can say, yes it is really 3 star standard but a very good one and these are the hotels we prefer. We are planning to hopefully meet up with friends we met here again next year (hi to Barry (the crabman), Janet, Charlie (El Mariachi), Roberta, Jane and Derek). If you want a pleasant report that's not noisy and good for all ages then this is an excellent choice.
Thanks to all the staff for the best holiday we have had yet..Cuba we'll be back.
Tip for UK travellers..make sure your Visa Cards are accepted in Cuba..some arn't if they have US connections.

This was my first time in Cuba Sol Cayo Coco, December 31-January 14 And all i can say is that it was well worth your money,New years was very entertaining(like every night was)i would go back any day!! All the staff were very welcoming and always smiling. The food wasn't that bad you had a big variety to pick from you had staff cooking fresh food cooking right in front of you!The beach on the right isn't the best as you didn't have a lot of space but i would advise to go on the one on the left as it was blocked from the wind and always had the sum shiny there. If you want to see the fish i would advise to take a snookle as there is a bridge with a lot of fish and over sea creature which are very interesting! The trips you could book were very fun like swimming with the dolphins(best experience ever)but if you get sea sick very easily i would advise not to go on the deep sea fishing boat and i was very disappointed as the fisherman dint tell us where the life jackets were or any safety bits but that isn't up to the hotel!!! The pool is very nice but people woke up early to put towels out so there wasn't any room for us!

I Advise Anyone To Go It Was Lovely!!!!!

Room Tip: the top left rooms 4060 has a very nice view you noraml amount of money!

Don't be put off by silly niggling comments.!
This hotel is an ideal place for a winter break at what I considered to be a reasonable price for the time of the year, it's not 4* and getting a bit tired but the staff are a fantastic crowd and do everything possible to help and serve people with a smile, using there limited resource's.
It is not what you would call a activity holiday more of a chill out location but hey ho that was fine for our needs at this time of the year.
Yes they do run short of a few things mainly bacon ,gin, tonic but this is due to there only one supplier in the area and don't forget the embargo from America is still an issue.
The rooms, gardens and other areas are kept nice and clean, tidy.
I will make praises to some of the great staff names that i can recall, esteban, andy, orlando, dioni in the bars,Taismary,Elvis,Jessica, in the buffet restaurant. Beach grill is cold and windy at the time we used them.
Horse ridding just outside the hotel is great for 10 peso's and the open top bus to Pillar beach is a good ride out.

This is my second time to Cuba and my first to Cayo Coco. Last time I was in Cuba I was able to explore towns and see Havana so this time I was happy being somewhere more isolated. I had read the reviews before going and was a little concerned but once there I started to think there are a lot of complainers out there.

I would recommend this hotel. If you are expecting a 4 star hotel like you get in North America you should stay in North America. The food isn't amazing, but I always found something I enjoyed! The shower pressure was really low, not a big deal. Other than that I had no concerns. The staff were very friendly and we got to know a few over time. The hotel was also very accommodating to moving our rooms off the main floor for no extra charge.

Yes we tipped regularly (about 1 CUC usually) and we never felt it was expected but always felt it was greatly appreciated. These staff work very long days and have little time with there families. Most of them are very educated and fluent in several languages. They work in the hospitality industry because this is where there is the most opportunity for them to make money.

The beach was amazing. The one to the right is wavy and deep. The beach bar is located here. The beach on the left was my favourite and it was shallow and calm and you can walk out very far before it gets deep.

We did a jeep/boat tour which was fun. The best part was definitely the boats, I HIGHLY recommend it! We also did horseback riding on the beach which was good but pretty timid if you are a rider.

A few mentions for staff. Yoisi, amazing woman and the best server. She went out of her way to make us welcome. Duanne at the lobby bar, best drinks by far. Henry at the front desk, amazing service and so helpful! And Orlando at the pool bar who was always so welcoming and friendly.

This was not a party resort. When we were there it was a lot of families or middle aged couples. The hotel lobby has a great lounge area (outside but with a roof) and there was live entertainment nightly there. We were two couples in our late 20's and all had a great time.

Room Tip: Higher floors have more privacy. If you want a quiet room do not get one near the lobby/pool area.
