“Average hotel....superb Staff!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2012

Visited Sol Cayo Coco February 10-17, 2012...third trip to Cuba and would rate all properties equally...basically if they are rated a 4star by TripAdvisor Members you know what you are getting in Cuba. Loved the fact that it was only 15 minutes (if that from the airport). Sol is a very laid back hotel. If you like beaches this hotel is great as it has two (one is great for the windy days at it is sheltered). Rooms were good for Cuban standards however as stated the beds are miserably hard (okay for a couple of nights but after the 4th was very noticeable). Food was hit or miss...again could always find something to eat. About the same as the other 4 star resorts in Cuba we have stayed at. As repeated numerous times by TripAdvisor Members what makes this hotel stand out is the Staff. Every Staff we encountered was very friendly. As in every hotel there are exceptional staff and for us they were Omelio, Orlando and Jendy they made our trip..impecable service... hope the fishing is good Jendy and wife and soon to be child are doing well. If you are looking for a quiet holiday to lay on the beach and soak up some rays...this works!!

Room Tip: There is no need to pay for a ocean view room as I believe you can see the ocean from all of the roo...

Go to the sol every year and are due to go back in 3 weeks time can't wait to go see everyone.. all staff are so friendly makeing sure they involve everyone in whatever they do! The food is fantastic and is always something for everyone! The hotel cleaners are fantastic. The entertainment is fab too. . The hotel is situated on the white sanded beach with crystal clear water..when going to cuba you have to bear in mind that its a poor country and the job the staff do is amazing .they are so gratful and its always a pleasure. . 3 weeks till I go and have been on the countdown for ages.and I am positive it won't b the last time I go.

Just returned from our 4th visit at Sol Cayo Coco and it certainly wont be our last.
What some previous negative reviewers have found to moan about I will never know. Sure this is not a luxury resort, but it doesn’t claim to be, what you do get is the warmest welcome you are ever likely to receive, from staff that want you to enjoy your stay and have as good a time as possible. The hotel is a little dated, and renovations are an ongoing thing, since our last visit in 2010, a new beach bar as been built with a wooden decking area outside where you can sit and have a few drinks whilst watching the sea or enjoy a tasty pizza or burger. A new courtyard seating area has been created behind Duannes cocktail bar, a little addition since our last visit. New sofas and cushions with matching glass tables have been replaced in front of the cocktail bar, new tables and chairs in the lobby bar.
The room we were allocated was perfect, it was clean and spacious with what appeared to be a newly refurbed bathroom with a very large walk in shower, always hot water and large bottle of shower gel and shampoo provided, No conditioner however, so bring your own. Beds were hard but very comfortable. Air conditioning was excellent and quiet too. But the best thing about the room was the view, wow, it was lovely to wake up and see that beautiful turquoise sea.

Food was same as ever, very good. If you cant find something to eat here you must be extremely fussy. Iv managed to gain 10lbs in 2 weeks. I never had the same thing twice except the BBQ Chicken for lunch from the beach restaurant, because it was just too scrummy not to have again and again. Sometimes the queues did get long for the fresh cooking stations, but that all depended what time you were eating, obviously at peak times its gonna take a while, but to be honest I stood behind some people that looked like they were eating enough for the whole week their plates were so full, so they obviously caused tail backs. There is a pasta station and stir fry station, freshly cooked fish, chicken, steak etc on the grill, one night there was turkey being carved, another it was a huge pork joint, as well as the usual buffet trays filled with meat dishes and veg, lots of salad, what else do you need!! Soups are very tasty too

If you want 5* luxury then pay the premium and go else where, this hotel is not for you, if you want a good value carribean holiday you will need to go a long way to beat the SOL, pound for pound I think you get a brilliant holiday for the cost. My 16 year old son is already asking if we can return next year.

Go with an open mind and you will love it
Rooms dated but very clean, how much time do you spend in there any way
Staff, warmest friendliest you will ever meet, yes we tipped them, but it was never expected and we received the same service even when we didn’t tip. Duanne, Dionni, Orlando, Luis, Blanca, Yulka, Elvis and Junior to name just a few, thanks Guys for making our holiday so memorable, it just wouldn’t be the same without you.
Food was plentiful, varied and tasty, No tummy upsets
Hotel grounds and communal areas are well kept but there is room for improvement, a little tatty if you look closely in nooks and crannys, but the staff work tirelessly cleaning and tidying.

Now the negative points!!! There does appear to be an issue with toilet paper at the pool and beach bar toilets, this isn’t always replenished during the day,
Pool towels can now only be exchanged every 3 or 4 days, instead of whenever you want to, but it certainly didn’t make any difference to our holiday experience, just wanted people to be aware that I haven’t written a blinkered review of our holiday, Ive tried to put the good and the bad.
Be aware this is solely a hotel based holiday with excursions provided at cost, there is absolutely nothing to do outside the hotel, this has never been a problem for us tho.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me, Im sure after 4 visits I can answer most questions

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for your encouraging comments on our Hotel and Staff. It is always a pleasure to hear that our guests enjoyed their stay and experience at the Sol Cayo Coco.
As of this winter have a new beach bar where guest can enjoy different Cuban cocktails such as Mojito, Daiquiri, Cuba Libre and more…
From our hotel, guest can enjoy breath taking sea view from certain rooms that can be booked in advance either through a travel agency from Canada, England and other countries or sending email to us.
We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in a not too distant future.

My best regards,

TIPS
- Bring bubbas, plastic cups they use are very small.
- Bring facecloth, nothing in room.
- Do not need soap or shampoo, big bottles provided by hotel.
- Bring water shoes for walking in ocean, some rough areas and we seen crabs so don’t want to step on those!
- Exchange money elsewhere besides hotel. $88 or $89 to $100 at hotel. In town, $97 to $100 exchange rate at local bank. Don’t use U.S. money, alot of hassle we heard from others and terrible exchange rate.
- Bring own snacks if you want any, in hotel very expensive $5 for container of pringle chips. Also not much choice at hotel store.
- Book any tours right away, some are only offered 2 times a week and book up very fast.
- Bring own toilet paper whenever you leave your hotel room, even airport, has no toilet paper. Seems like beach washrooms have them early on in the day but not restocked later on. Especially is you leave the resort, bring a roll and beware, toilets are not clean and kind of gross outside resort.

Review
- Coffee in buffet for breakfast was terrible. Instant machine that makes it, much better at lobby bar. Real coffee served there with alcohol or without and is very tasty. Enjoyed the Spanish coffee they had. Ended up buying a bag of Cuban coffee to take back home.
- Ocean view rooms are worth the price. Nothing blocking your view, nothing like sitting on a chair on the deck watching the ocean.
- Gave gifts to our favorite bar tenders , maids etc. They really appreciated it. Things like nylons, hair stuff, Tylenol, bandaids, kids stuff like coloring books and felts. They prefer Disney related stuff and Dora we were told by the bar tender. When we went to the town, did not see one store to buy stuff so anything you give them, they will take.
- Public beach has beautiful powdered white sand. Other beach on resort is good too though. Bring bananas out with you to feed fish, amazing how once you throw in pieces of the banana, one or two fish come, then 5, then 10 or more. Snorkling is great on both sides, we preferred the public beach as less wavy and rough. Public beach on Saturdays and Sundays has alot of locals that come in on bus, so very crowded and noisy.
- Resort, very clean. Pool area gets very hot, no wind blows through because of the buildings.
- Best tasting mojitos at Lobby bar, see Orlando.
- Evening shows, only went to 2 while we were there. Were very similar and bad lip singing. They were Alright but we seen better in Mexico. We preferred hanging out at the lobby area, they had live music every night.
- Food was good. Good variety. Lots of choices, beef, chicken, fish, pasta grill station, stir fry grill station, fish grill station. After reading all the reviews on how bad Cuban food is, we were amazed to find that it was good, no complaints. They had everything you can think of and the choice was overwhelming. To everyone who complained about the food choices, did you not walk around the buffet area and see the variety. It was not the same thing every day either. You can have something different every day if you choose to.....for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Allowed to go to Tryp and Guillermo Sol hotel. Went to Tryp, much larger resort and more crowded, nice to spend day there but lagoon there stinks. Stagnant water. Guillermo, you have to take a bus too and takes about 30 min. You cannot walk to it.
- A la cartes were ok. Nothing too exciting. Beach al carte (Brazilian) was not too fancy. Supposed to wear pants but I saw a guy wearing shorts in there. So not sure how strict they are on the rules. They offered chicken, beef and seafood. Other a la carte over by buffet was air conditioned which was nice. Offered chicken, beef and seafood meals as well but more fancier presentation that other place. Piano player in there which was nice ambiance.
- Store was small , sold toiletries and some souvenirs as well as alcohol and cigars. Cheap booze, for example $5 or $6 for a bottle of rum. Pretty much same prices as airport.
- 3 or 4 days a week they have booths set up outside with various stuff for sale. Wooden ornaments, keychains, hats, statues, knick nacks, etc. The more you buy, the more better deal they give you. Pretty nice stuff. Alot of one of a kind stuff too which is nice. Husband looked for a tshirt but they did not carry anything larger than a large size. No xtra charge sizes for some reason and mainly medium sizes we found.
- Liquor – bought some on tour when we went to Ciego de Avila city. Hotel has alot of choice too.
- Cigars – buy from hotel. If you buy in town, if it does not have a band on it, they are technically illegal and cannot bring back to Canada. Good choice in hotel though. Note – not as cheap as i thought they would be, ranged in price from $4 each up to $20 each. Cigarettes are cheap though, 60 cents a pack.

Excursions
Extravaganza tour - $75 adults. Takes you to a Mangrove to ride a speedboat in a channel. Very cool actually. Then went to Ciego De Avila – capital of the province. See a cigar factory, bicycle taxi ride, visit some stores and get to shop at market. Market is not very big, not much selection but might be able to find a couple things if you look. Be aware that there are alot of beggars there that will come right up to you and ask for money and follow the tourists everywhere. Very demanding actually and follow the group as we walk to all the places our tour took us to. Same people we noticed, I think they make out pretty well and probably do this everyday. On the various tour stops they ask for tips where you have lunch, band plays, asks for tips, on sugar cane trip, they ask for tips after they do a dance. Etc. Take lots of dollars with you if you want to give any tips. On sugar cane train ride, get to actually eat sugar cane, which is very tasty! This is in town on Moron, where a lot of the resort workers live, this is where the sugar train ride is located. They get bussed in to Cayo Coco to work – 45 min each way.

Catamaron – $75 adults. Great for snorkling. 2 stops which were amazing. Wow, best snorkling I ever did. Spend 45 min at each location. Wish we stayed longer. Also have open bar and lunch on the catameron. Also get to go to Pilar Beach. They ask for tips (the workers) at end of the ride. Bring lots of suntan lotion, very hot on there. I got pretty good sunburn on this day.

Airport – smallest airport I have ever seen. You can pay $25 and be a VIP but for us it was not worth it as we were only there for one hour. I guess with the VIP you can have free drinks and food up until you board your plane. Airport has alot of shops and souvenirs, also a restaurant. I laughed when I seen that only 3 airplanes were to depart that day, i assume veradero is a bigger airport.

Overall – very good vacation. Weather was great, food was great! Hotel was clean and staff were always friendly. Beaches were amazing and crystal clear water. I would definitely go back here. Very secluded from any towns. From reading all the reviews in the past few months, we were sceptical and leery that we chose this hotel. But you know what, all the bad reviews, were just that, bad reviews. We had no problems at all and enjoyed everything. The week flew by and now we are back home and y’day we received 15 cm of snow........so how depressing is that! Oh well!! Let’s pull out our pictures of our trip and relive the memories!! If you have any questions, feel free to message me and I’ll do my best to answer any questions. Gracias!!

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms best.

Dear guest,
I appreciate your opinion on Tripadvisor. We are pleased to know that you have enjoyed the sun and the beach, specially our magnificent coral reef which is actually one of the most beautiful in Cuba and also in the Caribbean. Our hotel has access to two different beaches, "Las Coloradas" & "Playa Larga", one of them is shallow and calm all year since is protected from the wind by a natural barrier of reef. So when the weather is windy our guests still have the chance of enjoying a beautiful beach.
All guest that visit us have the option to book a Sea View Room. For just a little supplement to pay, guest may enjoy a wonderful sea view.
We would like to welcome you again in our hotel to make of your holiday a nicer one.
Best regards,

I just got back from Sol Cayo Coco today, and I had the most wonderful time. The place is beautiful, the beaches are great, but the most amazing thing about this place is the staff. They are so kind, and always go above and beyond to help you. The bartenders are wonderful, always smiling, and extremely kind. The cooks and servers are kind and helpful aswell.
The entertainment staff was amazing. Paris was so nice, funny, helpful and an amazing dancer, Mily was kind, funny and always around to give you a hug and a smile (also a great dancer), Tookie was hilarious, so much fun at the club and always a great laugh. Elaine, Delvis, Esther, Vladimir, I could go on and on.
Sadly, my phone crashed and I lost all my contacts, so I can't even text or email them to thank them. So if any of the staff have my number or email, please write or text me, because I can't write you.

Just came from Sol today (Feb 23). I think the title says it all! Wonderful hotel, the staff did get better...

I was disappointed when I learned that my chambermaid Gladys stole money from my room..Well It's not the first time that happened since I stayed in 2216 in may and the same thing happened to my friend and I...And this time I was in 2220...

Delvis, Toqui, Denis, Muca, Esther, Vladimir, Yianni never seems to fail at entertaining. And seriously, the resort would be dead without them.

Orlando, Jendy, Luis...thank you for making my experience worth it everytime I come! See you soon!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on top of the buffet!
