“A Good Time at the Memories Flamenco Feb 25th+”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

Travelled with my boyfriend...we are both late 30's...we have previously travelled to Cuba, Dominican, Mexico. This was my third trip to Cuba, twice to Veradero, and I found this hotel t be average to better than average. I would rate this hotel a 4/5.

We travelled with Sunwing from Charlottetown, PE--- the negative was the hour + delay to Cuba...Positives, it was a great flight, both there and back, and the meal service was quite good!

Going through customs in Cuba was quick, and sunwing was there to guide us to our transfer bus. The transfer was quick. On the bus, we were given our room keys,...which made check-in a breeze. This was a HUGE perk at this resort, and i have not experienced this on any other trip down south... :)

We booked a ocean view hotel room, asked for 3rd floor, king bed, and to be located in buildings 1 2 or 3..and we got everything we asked for. !! we stayed in building 1 and it was a great location to everything. we faced the ocean, so we didn't hear any noise from the theatre etc. what a great view !!!

The food was typical. The buffet was just fine. I was able to find food items that I enjoyed, and so did my boyfriend. Breakfast buffet was pretty good. Typical breakfast items, fruit seemed raw, but oranges were really tasty and sweet. Also bananas were ripe. We did bring our own ketchup, and BF found the Cuban ketchup to be quite tasty-BBQ like taste. For lunch, we ate at the BBQ grill and the pool side buffet, and found the food quite good. Pork seems to be a main dish, and really they prepare it quite well. fish was tasty as well. we ate pizza, hotdogs, and poutine, at the snack bar, and it was all good. not the greatest,..but good. when we received our room keys, we also received a card with 3/4 restaurants reservations. we ate at the ranchion--tasty soup, salmon steak, pork, rice dish, all quite tasty. we also ate at the Asian, and had suschi, tempura, chicken dish, rice, ...all very good. the wine was good too... lol... we mainly ate at the buffet, which we find is quick, pasta dishes (somewhat bland), pork, fish, beef stroganoff, chicken, potatoes, veggies, rice dish, various salads, and veggies, and cheeses, etc... desserts (bland)...but variety is there.

after supper, we hung out by the lobby bar...a nice atmosphere, with various bar drinks, lattes, coffee,... time to socialize and have a cigar, waiting for the nightly entertainment to start at 9 pm...

We saw two shows...the Michael Jackson, and magic show...and it was really well choreographed... they do a great job...very professional.

The beach is quite impressive. it is quite narrow, and there is a coral ridge about 8 feet deep, but the water is breath-taking. clear, shallow, bluest of blue and green...all said, by far one of the most beautiful beaches i have seen. They had plenty of loungers there, and huts to shade in. we did bring water shoes, and found them quite useful. we also brought our own snorkel gear, and there are some fish to be seen. we walked to the tip, and snorkeled around the small island...lots to see there.

The pool was descent in size, but i don't think they have enough lounge chairs for all the tourists. I was up early each day, and decided to go to pool one morning, and was surprised that by 630 am 1/4 of the loungers were taken. by 800am, good luck finding a spot by the pool.

The weather was fabulous. 35 plus...the huts are needed for relief, and we got relief in the pool...

Our room was quite spacious and simple. bed was hard, but omg i slept great all week. A/C worked great, room got cold quickly, and no musty smell. the cleaning staff come at all times of the day... and do a good job. we left her products and treats and some tips as thank you's. bar fridge was stocked daily, with beer and pop and bottled water. bring a converter for your appliances.

Our room had water issues first two days, where there was no water in the am or before supper. by day three we had great water pressure, but did experience the sudden burst of hot water...we were just grateful to have water at that point.

the service was hit and miss. i found most of the staff really friendly and helpful,... and some staff would ignore you or not be as helpful.

We did the Jeep On adventure, 110 Canadian....and that was a lot of fun...but i found the day long. we jeeped to the dock, then got on ski boats and drove to snorkelling site... then back to jeep...on to different tourist areas, and to the city of moron. A lot of driving in the jeep... and the city of moron is quite poor ... we did some souvenir shopping... but did give us a perspective on the Cuban culture/life...

Altogether, I found my experience at this hotel to be pretty ok. The management seem to be interested in our opinions, giving out customer service questionnaires, etc...so possibly with some slight improvements, this resort can live up to it's 4.5 * rating.

Room Tip: Choose buildings 1, 2 or 3...close to everythings ! Get up early to reserve your loungers! Book ea...

We just returned from this resort yesterday morning and I could not wait to write my review. It was my husband's first time at an all-inclusive resort and he was a little hesitant because he loves to do things on his own. We absolutely enjoyed EVERYTHING about this hotel. It is an amazing value, no doubt about it. We made some great friendships there (with the staff from the hotel), everybody was really friendly. We LOVE Cubans and practiced our Spanish quite a bit. I can not say enough about it. We love visiting by ourselves so we rented a car and drove to Moron (the city where most of the hotel workers live) and visited the city there. We had a blast and felt so safe the whole time, a testament to Cuban people who are just so friendly and relaxed. We made a very special connection with our gardener, Reinier who was such a nice guy. We did not bring the kids this time, it was an adult getaway for us but we did see many young families with kids and the resort has everything available to make it easy for parents with young kids. We will definitely be back here, only a question of time. We highly recommend this resort, can not wait to be back! Thank you to everybody, Muchas gracias para todo!

Room Tip: We had a room in bungalow 8, which is a little farther away from the Main Buffet, Entrance etc... bu...

I was really apprehensive about travelling to Cuba because I had heard the food wasn't great. I had no complaints about the food at this resort. In fact, I was really surprised at how good the food was!!!!

Food
The main buffet was great. During breakfast you could get omelettes, which we did every morning! We brought our own ketchup though because we had heard the ketchup in Cuba is not like we're used to in Canada. There wasn't much fresh fruit, but they had canned peaches, pears, and mandarins at almost every meal if you wanted to get some fruit. Some mornings there were bananas. For lunch and dinner we didn't eat much off the buffet. Again, we got our meals cooked fresh for us. They had a station for pasta, pizza, fresh grilled fish and shrimp and another station that I believe would grill chicken and beef. The food we had was fantastic. We only went to one a-la-carte. We went to the Asian restaurant. The food was okay, the service was fantastic, but the restaurant was so HOT we could barely enjoy ourselves. They did open all the windows to try and help with the heat problem. (and, after the winter we've been having here in Canada should I really be complaining about being too hot!). The 24 hour snack bar was good too. We didn't think the pizza was as good there as the main buffet, but the hamburgers and poutine were delicious!!!! We also ate lunch at the beach a few times. They cooked at the beach every day. We had fresh fish and paella that was amazing!!!!!!!

Arrival and Departure
At the airport there were people from the hotel there that handed out an envelope that had your room cards and your 3 a-la-carte bookings it. This was the BEST idea ever!!!! Once you got to the resort all you had to do was pick up your bags and head to your room. The hotel was only 15-20 minutes away from the resort. And, for 2.50 Canadian you could buy a beer to drink on the bus. We arrived to the hotel late at night - around 10:30/11 - and they had food out in the lobby. It was all cold by the time we got there, but still a nice touch and after travelling anything tasted good. We were also greeted with a cocktail - unfortunately it was non-alcoholic. At our orientation meeting the next morning the general manager, Jesus, came to introduce himself to us and welcome us to the resort. I have never even seen a general manager at any resort I've ever been to let alone have one come to the orientation session. You could see him around the resort all week. I don't think there was a day that went by that he wasn't out and about. And, on the night we left he got on our bus to thank us for spending time at Memories. I was really impressed by him. Based on his leadership you can see why the staff here offer such wonderful service!!!!!

Rooms
Our room was great. When we first got there we were in a room with 2 double beds and had requested a king. We called down to the desk that night and they said they could see our request on our reservation and asked us to come to the desk the next morning to see what they could do. The next morning they offered us a room with a king bed, but it was on the 1st floor and we had requested the highest balcony possible. So, they said they could move us the second day we were there to a room that was three doors down from us. And, a day later we were in a room with a king bed. We've been to other resorts and had the same issue and spent several days trying to get through to people at the front desk and have never had our issue resolved. This resort was right on top of it. All the rooms are 220 volt, so make sure to take a converter with you. We took one with us, which ended up not working and were able to get a loaner from the resort for one peso a day. When we called customer service they said someone would be to us in 5 minutes. We were prepared to wait over an hour because that's what has happened to us when we've travelled to the Dominican. Can you believe it........someone was actually to our room in 5 minutes!!!!!!!! I can't say enough about the service at this resort. Some people had trouble with getting their mini fridge stocked, but that was never an issue for us. The only thing we had to ask for was coffee, but it was in our room the next day. There was one day when we didn't get any facecloths, but every other day we were fully stocked with towels and facecloths. One group of people we talked to ran out of toilet paper in their room, but when we finished a roll it was replaced that day. The only thing our room didn't have was Kleenex, but I had brought our own box so that was a non-issue. We were in building number 8 and had a nice view of the lake behind us and could see the ocean.

Water issues and water pressure
Yes, there were a few times when there was no water or very little water pressure, but we're not in North America. You have to remember where you are and be greatful that we're fortunate enough to travel. The couple times there was no water at all the problem only lasted for maybe and hour and then the water was back on. The one morning the resort ran out of water was during the gold medal hockey game they played for us in the amphitheatre. So, there was no coffee for anyone at 7 am. But, they served up orange juice and beer and kept everyone happy 'til the water came back on!!!

Pool
I can't speak about the pool because we spent our entire week on the beach!!!!!

Beach
Marty is the BEST bartender at the beach bar!!!! It's a good idea to take water shoes with you to get in to the water. The beach is a little rocky, but once you're in it's beautiful. We were told the beaches were amazing until 3 years ago when they had a horrible hurricane and afterwards they ended up with rocky beaches. The right side of the beach isn't as rocky as the left and the right side of the beach has beach chairs that are SO much more comfortable. The watersports area has kayaks and pedal boots that you can take out for free. They also have guys that will take you out on a catamaran for free (but, they'd like a tip!). We had a lot of fun out on our half hour catamaran ride. There are also little pathways to get to the sides of the beach. One goes out behind building number 5 (I think it's building 5...we only used it once) and the other is behind building number 1.

This is a resort I would definitely consider travelling back to. Thanks for a great vacation!!!!

We only booked this resort at the last minute because Sunwing changed our planned flight times to Jibacoa. The staff are very welcoming and friendly - perhaps some of the best that we have had on our four trips to Cuba.

The Manager went above and beyond - he was always about inquiring about your stay and making sure you were happy. He is a great guy.

The food was great - the buffet is too small for the size of the resort but in saying that we never had to wait long for food and they had a good variety of food.

The beach is a short careful step over rocks but once in the water - it was wonderful and warm. You can take nice long walks in either direction on beautiful white sandy beaches.

The beach staff were friendly and were always eager to please with getting a chair or making sure we had shade or sun. They were the best!

The program directer worked tirelessly every day and put on amazing children's shows and adults. She is a true asset. Loved the Michael Jackson show!!!!

We had power and water issues - but both were corrected in short time - no biggie.

I didn't like the twin beds. Who wants twin beds? Actually my husband loved them - but not me I wanted a Queen or King size.

This resort is definitely worth taking a vacation to - the staff make sure that you will enjoy yourself.

Two thumbs up for the Memories Flamenco and the great resort staff.

Room Tip: The third floor has wonderful views!

the good:

shows were very good
food was tasty
room was nice, liked the seating area
ocean view was awesome, 3rd floor bldg 2
water sports were good
lobby bar area was a nice area to sit in the evening
beach staff was great,
pool was nice, chilly early in the day but warms up as day goes on
manager was highly visible
liked the drink station in the lobby at night which served specialty coffee

the bad:

line ups at the bars
had a line up at the buffet one night, 20 mins wait
while the food was good there was not a huge selection, one of the smallest buffets I have experienced
NO BACON ever
very hard to get a chair at the pool, saw 2 chair arguments, one got very heated.
had shade at the beach every day but my husband was down there very early to get a spot
had some very friendly staff but some that were also not so friendly
some water issues in room
the beach bar was always lined up
the coral wasn't a deal breaker but was hard to walk over and the only really clear spot was by the diamond area. while some people say that everyone used the area we didn't. I do not use something I didn't pay for. That being said , everyone should have access to the best spot on the beach, you shouldn't have to pay extra to use the beach at all, isn't that why we go away in the winter,
the a la cartes are pre booked but you go at the time they give you which for us was 8:30. too late!
the spa was ok, small , the massage was more of a rub than a full massage. the sauna and steam room were very nice and the jacuzzi was hot
had a hard time to get a seat at the shows, be there early , standing room only for the michael jackson show even if you are a half hour early, yes, resort was probably full but they should still be able to accomadate everyone as that is no excuse
the only food selection at the beach shack was fish, so you have to like fish..

i read that the diamond club is not worth it but I think having the prime beach area and reserved seating at the show and having their own drink station at the beach may actually have been worth it..

also, the service at the buffet was not great, sometimes they filled your coffee. sometimes you had to get it yourself, same with juice and wine , the line up at the bread station was not good and the line up at the toaster was long.. maybe another toaster and another bread station would help.
this is the first place I have been that I had to scrub my feet after I have been at the beach. our feet were black .

The fact that the manager was highly visible did not make up for the lack of service from the staff..

Dear guest,
Thank you for taking the time for sharing your comments with us. They are very important to us in order to improve our standards and quality. Reviews like those help us so much in improving our quality and offers. I loved to have had the opportunity to talk to you in the resort so your problems would be solved.
We are aware that you might have been surprised about the food variety, especially if you are used to another destinations. It is of utmost importance for us to give you the best food quality we can, but unfortunately in Cuba, it is sometimes difficult to receive all the products we need to compete with other Caribbean destinations.
Concerning the pool chairs we already solve the problem in the beach and the pool aswell, we made the arrangements and now we do have chairs for everyone.
The a la carte restaurants reservations are made in advance for your confortablity to avoid lines at the lobby area to book them but in case you want to change the times there has been and will be always a girl who change them for your satisfaction.
Once again, thank you very much for your comments; they were very helpful to us.

Went to Memories Flamenco last year with friends, went back January this year and we are now going back again next week. Rooms are very clean and the staff is friendly. They have done a lot of work on the beach since our first visit and it is now one of the most beautiful beaches I have seen and we have cruised the Caribean several times. The service in the snack bar is excellent. Food was good there and also at the main buffet but you should, try the Cuban a la carte... we really enjoyed it. The resort was full but there were lots of lounges at the beach and the pool. If you couldn't find one the pool staff got one for you. My only disappointment was not being able to get an appointment at the Spa because we left it until the end of our stay

Room Tip: Resort is quite large, ask for building 2 or 3 If you want to be close to the pool

Just arrived back to PEI from this resort. Our sunwing flight was 1 1/2 hrs late leaving PEI.

The lighting is quite bad so bring a small flashlight. I was glad I had a small one in my purse. The workers were working on it a couple days we were there. We had no water the first night and part of second day. They also ran out of beer our first full day. These issues were fixed.

The resort is very nice and the staff are outstanding. The room we had was wonderful and brothers had a suite which was really nice.

The beach is long but not very wide when tide is in. I took water shoes but didn't need them where we entered the water. Glad I took my snorkel mask, lots of fish to see at the beach. Had to go to beach early to get chairs. The two gentleman working on the beach were very attentive to peoples needs.

This is my second trip to Cuba but first to Cayo Coco and the food was excellent here. I could always find something to eat. Their salmon and white fish were delicious. The 24hr snack bar has great coffee. The pizzas and ham and cheese sandwiches were great.

The shows were well done, lots of talent.

The manager puts his heart and soul into the resort as well as many of the workers. I would return to this resort in a heartbeat and would highly recommend it.

The return trip to PEI going through our customs was the worst part of the trip. We arrived at 3:25 and 5:00 we got through customs.
