The day that I went to the Soggy Dollar Bar was probably the best day of my life. While staying in St. John, we chartered a boat and went to Jost Van Dyke for the day. After spending time listening to Foxy, we boated over, dropped anchor and swam ashore to the Soggy Dollar Bar. What a day! The atmosphere is calm and peaceful, but also alive and fun. Drinks never tasted so good. I would go back there at any opportunity. You should, too!

So here's how you can tell if a place is truly good. Whip up a hurricane. Call her Irene. Knock out the power all over the BVI. And leave it off for 4 days.

Now, sit back and see what happens. If you try this at the Soggy Dollar Bar/Sandcastle Hotel you'll discover how a first class establishment is run. First, their power generator kicks on (and stays fueled for 4 days). Next, their staff remains cheerful and relaxed. And finally, you get to enjoy one of the most special places on earth - as others visit having escaped from their high-priced resorts that lost power and had no generators, and hence no food to serve.

A heavenly beach. A wonderful restaurant with first-class food. Comfortable cottages. And world class service. Thanks to Tina and the gang for a memorable vacation!

We’re Parrot Heads and frequent travelers of the Caribbean. We finally had the extra money to travel to Jost Van Dyke to go to the Soggy Dollar bar. What a disappointment! Just so you know, it’s not a cheap day trip and expensive to stay overnight. Jost Van Dyke is a very small island with few people and just a step above 3rd world.

The bar is located on a White Bay beach, which is absolutely beautiful. But the bar itself is living on its history. Yes, the place gets packed with party happy people, but that’s one of the problems. It’s turned into a loud crowded party scene for mostly the young and rich and famous. Also, the drink that was invented there and for which it is famous, the Pain Killer, has been tainted because they no longer use Pusser’s Rum, which is unique in its taste and absolutely essential for a Pain Killer. According to an employee, to improve the profit margin, they stopped using Pusser’s and started using a homemade rum based alcohol they make in the back. We tasted it plain and it was horrible and it could peel paint.

The beach itself has also been ruined by all those partiers. The large majority of the partiers arrive by boat and they anchor just feet from the beach making it difficult to go in the water, and they have little regard for safety, running propellers just feet away from people, after consuming numerous Pain Killers. The waters near the beach get so crowded with boats that they run into one another.

The bright side is that there are several other bars (one in particular) along the beach which make real Pain Killers.

Bottom line, the Soggy Dollar, from Buffet’s travels, is gone and replaced with an “any alcohol will do” young person party bar.

I am not an overly hard reviewer, and give many more great reviews than mediocre or poor. That being said, I really thought before going that I would be disappointed with the Soggy Dollar Bar, just because you hear a lot about it, and it doesn't look all that nice. I can say that you're not going to mistake it for your upscale downtown bar, but the atmosphere was at least charming. What surprised both my wife and I however, was the quality of the pain killer they served. I didn't really think they would be any different than any other place on the island, however after watching them make the drinks, complete with grinding fresh nutmeg in them, I can say there is a difference, and this was one of the top drinks I had while on the island even though I don't particularly care for any of the ingredients they put in them.

The setting for the bar is great, with a great swimming area and beach in front of it you can enjoy before, during, or after enjoying your drink.

I expected it to be a tourist trap that lived by reputation alone, and I was wrong. My wife and I were both glad we visited the soggy dollar and will be back again some day.

Busy, busy, fun place. Lives up to it's reputation. True, it's swim ashore, but hey they have plumbing, so it's worth it, right? Drinks are good, everyone's having fun. FYI drug dealers work the fringes.
