“Great B&B”
Reviewed September 1, 2012

Tom and Doris are the best. I was traveling on my own and a bit nervous about it. They made me feel right at home. The rooms were spacious and the breakfast delicious. However, it was the gracious hospitality that made my trip. I would definitely recommend this B&B to anyone.

We had a short but great stay in Trout River. Walked the boardwalk, had a great meal at Seaside Restaurant, watched the salmon jump, gorgeous sunset. Doris and Tom were most welcoming and had a mountain of tourism information. Doris even found us a great B & B in L'Anse aux Meadows and showed my husband how to play the Ugly Stick! Our room was spacious, clean, and a very comfortable bed. Great breakfast - loved the homemade jams! We highly recommend their B & B.

What a wonderful place to stay. The property was built specifically to be a B&B. Rooms are beautifully decorated and have a nice en suite bath. The property is large, lovely lawns and view. Our hosts were very friendly and we really felt part of the family. In celebration of her birthday, we were welcomed to join in music performed by her husband and a guest on guitar. Was amazing. Breakfast was great--4 choices. I highly recommend staying and would book 2 days as Trout Brook is a lovely little town with a great restaurant (Seaside) and lot to see and do in the area. (particularly Gros Morne National Park).

Room Tip: 4 rooms upstairs--all nice.

[note: We visited 3 nights, last week of July 2011] When it comes to rating satisfactory
accommodation, certain words pop up: Good, Better, Best. When you have travelled
extensively for over 30 years, there always invariably comes to mind another level, with a
far shorter and much more restrictive list of establishments. On this select short list remain
only, the ''crème de la crème'', the ''nec plus ultra'', or as one would have it ''the select few''.
In this superior group, Doris and Tom Shepherd's B&B definitely fits in. In all aspects it rates
top marks, really excellent value, where the hosts make certain everything is perfect, from
arrival to departure, every detail thought out, just meant to please. As if this was not
enough, remember ''location, location, location'', you also get the best side of Gros Morne
National Park, the Trout River side, with the most interesting and picturesque geological
formations, The Tablelands. The most attractive hiking trails, Lookout Hills and Green
Gardens, taking you way up from the foothills or right down to sea level. The most exciting
boat tour: Explore 500 million years of geological beauty ''up close and personal'' in a 12
passenger Ocean Quest zodiac on Trout River Pond. The most charming and photographed
village in the park, Woody Point at Bonne Bay, ( off of which sea going cruise ships lay
anchor in deep waters to allow passengers access to this quaint little town via their
motorized lifeboats ). Last but certainly not least, a most memorable seafood dining
experience awaits you at the Seaside Restaurant in Trout River. We went there 2 out of 3
evenings, simply put, the food is stupendous. Linking all of these memorable experiences
and right at the heart of it all is Shepherd's B&B, As Lee Iaccoca would have it: '' If you think
you can find a better place, Buy It! Merci Doris and Tom for a most memorable stay in your
outstanding establishment. Henri and GiGi, Québec QC ( PS Tom even came out and really
got involved helping me solve a worrisome car problem, so we could safely continue our
journey. Our thanks again Tom, and our best to you Doris).

Room Tip: We saw all of them and they are lovely. Safari was the only one available when we booked, and we lov...

We booked Sheppard's B&B for two nights, based on the recommendation of the Sleepy Noggin B&B hosts, who stayed not too long ago.

As it say's on their web site http://sheppardsbandb.com/, the B&B is situated on a hilltop overlooking the Tableland Mountains, Trout River Pond and the Atlantic Ocean. It is also within close proximity to a number of Gros Morne National Park hiking trails.

Doris and Tom were very welcoming, easy-going and friendly... I feel they just come by it naturally. Upon arriving to this relatively new (within the last 5yrs), traditional style B&B, we were greeted by Doris and Tom. They had pretty much a full house when we arrived, but still had time to call down to the local restaurant to make sure they were still open. Getting really tired of late night dinners, but what can you do when there is so much to see!

After dinner, we unloaded our gear into the "Lilac Room", which we call the "engineers room", you have to ask Doris about why we called it this...see if she remembers. Our room was quite large; it has a queen bed and its own private ensuite. Decorated in lovely lavender colours, the room was spacious and clean, and had a large window to allow cool air in at night. The mattress was very firm, similar to our Temperpedic which we just love and highly recommend.

Breakfast for both mornings was very nice, ham, eggs (the way you want them), toast, coffee, juice, yogurt, jams, and homemade muffins (yummy), fresh fruit and if all you want is cereal, they have that too... what else could you ask for!

We've stayed at many B&B's over the years, most before Trip Adviser was ever around and never once, until we came to the Sheppard's, have we ever had hosts offer to tour us around. Doris took us out for over two hrs looking for moose on our last evening with them, taking us all the way into Woody Point and back, and a short hike on "Green Gardens" trail.... how special is that! Unfortunately, we didn't see any moose and arrived too late for ice cream at the "The Old Loft Restaurant, www.theoldloft.com". However, when we got back to the B&B, Doris went in to her private stash of homemade desert squares and shared them with us, delicious! At about the same time another guest came down looking for help with accommodations in Twillingate and I thought I'd mention the boat tour we took with "Skipper Jim Boat Tours, skipperjim.ca" to see the icebergs. I went up stairs to get his card, when suddenly, I hear Doris yelling "there's a moose in the back yard, there's a moose in the back yard!!" So I ran to the back hallway window and sure enough there was this big bull running back and forth, not sure which way to go, when it finally made its way to the front of the house and ran down the drive way. I can still hear Doris, "there's a moose in the back yard..." Too funny!

Sheppard's B&B was terrific, we highly recommend it... thank you Doris and Tom for making our trip to Newfoundland even more special.

We had 2 of the best evenings of our 2 1/2 week trip around Newfoundland. The location is terrific being close the the major trails in the Tablelands and the town trail. Doris and Tom certainly know how to make guest feel at home and welcome. Breakfasts were delicious and filling. Our room was spacious, comfortable, quiet affording excellent sleep.
