Review of Western Brook Pond

If you're wondering whether it's worth spending $60 pp to go on a 2 hour boat trip of this Pond = Lake, the answer is a definite yes. This is a very interesting fjord surrounded by steep rock walls. It was carved by glaciers but when they receded, the "Pond" was cut off from the sea so it is not a salt water fjord. In fact Western Brook pond water is very low in nutrients and there are very few fish in it. It helped that the weather was fabulous the day we went - no rain, not too hot, a mixture of sun and cloud. There is a 3 km easy hike to get from the car park to the dock and it is best to leave enough time to get there. There are informational placards along the trail about the geology, flora and fauna. We took 40 minutes to hike in and only 20 mins to hike out as we wanted to beat the traffic. The staff on the boat is very knowledgeable and give you enough information about the geology and the marine life to make the tour interesting. We would have loved to see a moose or a caribou or two, but no such luck.

Prior to my trip, I was told that if I had to do one thing in Gros Morne, this was it. It definitely didn't disappoint. The view is breathtaking. You view the fjords, mountains, waterfalls, and get to listen to Newfoundland music.

You should reserve your seats ahead of time because it would be disappointing to walk the 45 minutes to the boat and not get a spot. I also recommend getting in line early if you want to sit on the top deck. This is why I didn't give it the full excellent.

Still - this is a must see! For more recommendations on what to do in Gros Morne: http://ontherocktrip.blogspot.com/2012/08/5-things-you-need-to-do-in-gros-morne.html

These really is no other way to view the amazing beauty of Western Brook Pond and its surrounding features than to do so from the boat. Which is probably how they get away with charging a rather ridiculous price for an overcrowded tour on which you will see as much of people's heads as you will of the actual scenery. The pond itself I would compare with a tour of Yosemite from a boat. It really was spectacular. The guide was very informative, happy to answer questions, and gave us tons of great information as we went along. I felt sorry for the people who were stuck outside without seats -- the tour lasted just over two hours and they both froze and were exhausted by the time that we got back to the dock. It was a very hot summer day, but once you hit the water, that temperature dropped quickly, so remember to bring a warm coat even if it happens to be a nice day. Also, reserve your spot in advance. Don't try to walk (45 minutes) to the dock and hope to buy a ticket. I think that most tours are sold out in advance. Overall, I would recommend doing the tour, but be prepared for a very crowded boat and a high price to reserve your spot.

Despite the rain, it was interesting. 2 hour boat tour. Half hour walk to the boat. Unfortunately there is not enough room under the roof on the boat so some got very wet.

A 45 minute walk from the parking lot to the Pond should not discourage you from taking the boat cruise through the fjords. The boat ride is very calm and even with a bit of rain, it was still a wonder to see. This is not a geological tour but the guides give you enough information to let you know how all this beauty came to be. The scenery is amazing. Glad I went.
