“One of the better Fish & Chip places in Metro St. John's”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

There are many debates about which place has the best Fish and Chips in St. John's. Most people will agree that the places in the city proper are very parking challenged. Views are at a minimum as well. So this is one of the attractions of by the Beach. There is ample FREE parking and the view of the bay is as close as you can get without getting wet. From the dining room you can watch the whales frolic in the bay and the boats go to and fro when the weather is nice. When the weather is not nice, you can watch the power of the ocean as the waves move the beach rocks around... So enough about the place. It is the food that you need to come here. The fish has a light batter and the chips perfectly done. And unlike most French fries that one encounters "on the mainland", the chips are made fresh from "real" potatoes... No frozen reprocessed fare here....it is the real deal. They also have other choices on the menu, but I would suggest that you go for the fish and chips first. You'll enjoy a sumptuous meal and will not leave hungry as the portion sizes are ample. Oh, one last thing... Bring your camera. The scenery around St. Philips is most memorable.

“Great Place”
Reviewed May 28, 2014 via mobile

Have been here many times, and each time is consistently the same, Great! Think the prices have snuck up at bit over the past couple years.
Fish is the best, flakey, moist and most important NOT greasy! The view is spectacular, can't say anything negative. For tourist it's worth the drive, 10~ min outside St. John's.

I've been searching to find the best fish and chips in St John's and, even though it's a little drive away, I've found what I've been looking for!

“The view!”
Reviewed February 24, 2014 via mobile

Best fish around! Depending on time of year there may be a wait, but well worth it. Service is nice, but it's seeing Bell Island and the surf that does it for me. The fish is not greasy & the portion sizes are reasonable.
It's about 15 min drive outside St. John's but well worth it.

“Fish 'n chips tastes great, service left a sour taste”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

Pros: Waiting staff friendly for the most part, fish and batter are great, chips are great, location and view is nice.

Cons: Manager was rude (just didn't care... not sure what the manager's issue was. very rude), ordering/seating confusion (was slow, tried to charge us extra on our bill), higher prices.

Food wise I'd give it a 4/5, service and set-up i'd give it a 2.5/5. I have visited By the Beach 5 times. I would visit again but it would be a take out order and I would phone in ahead of time. Try their fish and chips, it's very tasty!
