My husband and I just spent a wonderful weekend on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Our visit began with an eco-tour from Broadwater Bay Ecotours. The boat tour through the barrier islands was led by Rick Kellam, a native of the Eastern Shore, who was very professional and well-informed. We saw hundreds of birds, learned lots of history and went beach combing on a deserted island. Then we went to our hotel, the Charlotte Hotel, in Onancock. The town is picturesque with manicured lawns and lots of historic buildings including beautiful churches. The hotel is pristine, the staff was friendly and the dinner and breakfast in their cozy, but not cramped, dining room were both fantastic. Try the scallop appetizer! Our room was small - the smallest at the hotel, but the only one available when we booked - but it had wonderful personal touches. The owners are welcoming and active in greeting their guests, and they really went above and beyond to make sure that we enjoyed our stay. I'm ready to go back!
