We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Kirkapol - only left this morning. No real complaints at all and we would seriously consider returning IF we return to Tiree in the future.

I travel alone. When I arrived at the Tiree airport, Fulton was waiting me for a passage to the house. Susan and Fulton are very kind and nice, very patients with my bad English language :)
My single room was confortable, very clean and with nice furniture. The House is in front of Gott bay and the wonderful beach. The only one dinner I had in the house was great, Susan is a very good cook. All the breackfast was great, good and very abundant. The internal lounge is confortable and was like at home.

This was a pleasant place to stay. The proprietor was friendly , the breakfasts good .
I did not eat here in the evenings but in the 2 local hotels. The single room I had was a bit small but clean and comfortable.

This was our second time staying with Susan and Fulton in Kirkapol House and we are already planning our stay for next year! When we arrived this summer, Susan and Fulton were out but there was a welcome note pinned to the door, telling us to make ourselves at home and that they were looking forward to seeing us later.
My husband is diabetic and on insulin, and before we arrived the first year, we had asked Susan by email if this would be a problem. No problem, she replied, and we were assured that there would be suitable foodstuffs at mealtimes. The food was good and plentiful at breakfast and Fulton is a dab hand at making light and fluffy omelettes! We were always asked if we would like to eat in in the evenings and when we did, the food was well cooked and delicious. Susan had made it plain before we arrived the first year that she does no cooking on a Sunday night as it’s her night off, and she encouraged us to book a meal at one of the other establishments on the island.
Our fellow guests were also impressed with Susan and Fulton and their extensive local knowledge. They were willing to chat at length and give advice when asked.
Our room was well equipped with the usual tea-making facilities and hair-drier, as well as having an en-suite shower room with heated towel rail. There was an electric heater in the room in case it got chilly, and spare blankets for the very comfortable bed. If we had any problems or queries, they were dealt quickly with by either Susan or Fulton. Rooms were cleaned every day, and the tea-tray replenished as well. There was a built-in wardrobe and a dresser providing plenty of space for storing clothes.
The dining room is large and well-furnished with windows sheltered from the ever-present wind by a well-kept hedge in front of the house. The lounge is a lovely room with paintings of local views hung on the walls. There is a large window for looking out to sea over Gott Bay with its silver sands, and the views of the Treshnish islands, Staffa and Iona are stunning when the weather permits.
The daily ferry from Oban arrives at nearby Scarinish, and this has a well-stocked Co-op which sells fresh-baked bread and other necessities.
There are several restaurants on the island for eating out, but it is advisable to book in advance if you don’t want to be disappointed.
Likes: The welcome, the food, the room, Susan and Fulton.
Dislikes: The lock on our room door wa very stiff.

What a sorry excuse for island hospitality! MAny people recommended this to us but the reality is a mile away from the reputation, i'm afraid. Maybe it was once good but they've clearly got lazy, fed up and are resting on laurels. Fair enough they had beds and fed us decent breakfast but those were the only positives. Choose somewhere else - it'll be better, and cheaper.

On arrival, the woman put her head round the kitchen door, said nothing and handed my husband key No 2 and pointed upstairs. I think she was on the phone. We thought she'd come back to us when finished but no, that was it as far as greeting/arrival/check in went.
This guest house WAS VisitScotland listed (ie graded) but isn't anymore. They continue to use the plaque and star rating on their website though. They also continue to use Walkers Welcome and Cyclists Welcome stickers which means they're supposed to have specific facilities to make life easier for you, but, when we asked about a safe place to store the bikes out of the rain we were told there was nowhere to put them. It was pouring for the first 2 days but there was also nowhere to dry wet gear. No maps available either. The landlady was generally frosty. On the morning after our 5th night she said to us as we arrived for breakfast 'Aren't you leaving today?' in a manner that caused the other guests to remark on its hostility once she'd left the room. I said we'd booked for 7 nights, she said 5, then i reminded her that we'd discussed initially whether it'd be Sat-Sat or Sun-Sun. Then i asked her if she'd like us to leave that day. She said no, it was just a matter of whether she had spare rooms (there was no issue here, she had 6 rooms and only 2 in use, but she was being nippy, making a point). In the event we established that the hotel along the road had rooms available for our last 2 nights and told her we'd decided to leave that morning after all. She assumed we were leaving the island (although the day's ferry had sailed by then...) but we told her that actually we were just decamping to the hotel. It still didn't register with her that it was her attitude that precipitated this situation. She was a terrible advert for Scottish hospitality. The hotel next door was actually cheaper than her guest house, too, the folk were much nicer and actually trying to improve the place rather than her attitude of trading on (?) past glories (and misrepresentation). She needs to give up. The other folk we spoke to also commented on her attitude and the tiredness of the 15 yr old decor etc. When booking, i'd asked if there would be some reduction in her rate (£31 B&B, '3 star') given we were staying 7 nights and she'd have less work and cost than for a single night. Nope. The first evening i asked about availablity of evening meals. 'Yes, £16 but not at weekends. Book the night before.' What kind of food? 'The usual: just normal stuff. Nothing fancy'. What kind of dishes? 'Soup for a starter, then just a normal sort of main course, then dessert.' Yes but what kind of actual dishes? 'It depends what i'm cooking, or what i've got in..' She eventually said she couldn't be specific (!) and that there were a couple of restaurant options nearby that we could get food at. This was just another example of her couldn't care less attitude. £16 was the same as the very nice home made food in the Scarinish Hotel, who at least would specify in advance what you might be eating. How were you to know the landlady wasn't going to dish up Heinz soup and microwave dinner for 1? Based on everything else about the establishment that seems highly likely. Avoid.

  • Liked — location was great, on beach, close to amenities
  • Disliked — misrepresentation of services, owner/landlady's attitude, overpriced, under-whelming
