“A return visit to Gorse Hill - another happy Spring Break bargain stay :-)”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2014

A return trip to Gorse Hill hotel. We stayed last August, booking a special deal DB&B at £79 for a Sunday night and this time round £37 B&B (£20 for room so we booked breakfast also). The hotel is near RHS Wisley, as members the reason for our trip. We stayed in the same room as before (Room 47) and although on the small side was good value for money. We had no issues with the room being dirty, the bathroom a good size and the bed comfortable for us. Our only gripe is that there is no bedside table on one side of the bed. Our check in was efficient, the hotel offers free coffee in the lounge, along with sweets, biscuits and muesli bars - something that we feel is very generous. The grounds are lovely, the Connect 4 game was broken, it would have been great fun to play. Breakfast was good, albeit not as good as I remember it last year. The fruit salad isn't that inspiring (mostly tinned) and the toaster seems to take an age. The cooked breakfast was good, sausages tasted lovely and bacon nice and thick. Some of the food had dried a little under the heat lamps, but all perfectly edible. We ate out in the evening at the Hunters Lodge (Vintage Inn pub) which was a short drive away - nothing spectacular but basis food for a reasonable price. Overall another successful stay with De Vere and we would be happy to return again. Maybe this time we'll book a Signature Room - they look very nice. :-)

Room Tip: We were shown a Signature Room - they are more spacious so if you can book one of these.

We paid a pittance for bed and breakfast so I feel a bit ungrateful moaning but I do not believe it was worth the published room rate.

This is the 3rd Devere property we have stayed in the last week and my least favourite, purely because of the dirty bathroom. I don't mind dated furniture, worn carpets but dirt - unacceptable.

The hotel itself looked nice but there was a weeding going on so we steered clear of the main building. The rooms are on 2 levels in a courtyard around the main entrance and parking is nearby so not far to walk. We had a. Ice quiet room looking onto woodland and had an undisturbed nights sleep. The room had evidence of not being hoovered thoroughly, the bathroom was quite frankly unacceptable, lots of mould, mildew and dirty grout. Nothing a good clean with a bleach spray wouldn't sort out. It astonishes me that housekeeping staff would find it acceptable. The room was of a good size and the sleep quality good.

Breakfast quality is good and the same in all the properties, the only difference is the quality of the bread and pastries we found.

On arrival at breakfast there was no where to sit apart from on a large table with other people, when I said I didn't want to sit with strangers they realised we were not part of the wedding party. We left and decided to come back later. A short while later we had a call from the restaurant apologising and letting me know a table was now ready and reserved for when we were ready. This was a lovely thought and appreciated, it's a shame the hotel cannot provide the hostess a list of non wedding guests so they can manage seating a bit better.

Not sure I would return, knowing Horsley Park is not far I would choose that location over this.

Had an excellent experience staying at Gorse Hill. The surroundings are absolutely astounding; a vast, Austen-esque garden, a beautiful property, lovely rooms and best of all, a staff group whose very first priority seemed to be to keep every guest content and at ease. Only draw back: the quality of the meals served in the restaurant varied a bit from day to day. First meal was so-so, second meal was fantastic.

I have stayed here once before last year and this is my 2nd stay and i thought it was very nice. When we checked in on the Saturday night the receptionist wasnt the most welcoming but on the check out the girl that day was so helpful. We had room service and the food was just so lovely and hot (room service isnt always pipping hot but this was) The beds were comfy, no noise, the grounds are amazing and we will be back. 2 weeks time in fact :D

Stayed for a friends wedding, paid 50 told another 150 had to be taken on the card for a deposit!( will take 5-7 working days to be refunded !why?) Went to room at 0100 and spotted the single and a half sized "double" the cheapest spongy mattress and cheap pillows combined with some sort of alarm that beeped from the kitchens below all night made sure I got no sleep, typing this while Mrs tries to coax some life from the shower.(no pressure) Can't wait to leave , truly awful wish we had paid for a cab.

Stayed here for a friends wedding. The surroundings of the hotel is really nice. Not far from London it feels like its a million miles away from the chaotic city. The room was not as spotless as it other hotels. However the food at the wedding was nice and the staff were friendly.

Allocated room: 69 'The Lodge'
The room, whilst tidy, is VERY tired.
Against:
The ironing board is grubby & stained.
The iron is stored in a cradle that is fixed inside the 'single' sized wardrobe, reducing the available storage space.
Most of the plug sockets in the room are awkward to get to or on a bare wall.
No decaffeinated tea/coffee in the service tray. When we went out on the Friday, we left a note asking specifically for some more decaffeinated coffee/tea. On our return, the tray had been restocked with normal coffee/tea but no decaffeinated (and no milk either!). We phoned to reception and eventually some was brought down to the room.
Scale ring in the bath due to the taps dripping.
Water from basin in bathroom cloudy & full of scale.
The radiator hissed/rumbled quite loudly all the time, even when cold.
Two very small windows, one of which is above the bed. We could not stop the cold air flowing across the bed, even by putting a rolled up towel across the window sill.
No information in the room regarding the hotel facilities.
The paint in several areas seemed to have had water running down it.
Access to the room is via a very steep, narrow set of stairs.
Pipes 'rumbled' when adjoining rooms used their toilet/taps/shower.
The quilt on the bed is only as wide as the bed. With two people in the bed, we were constantly getting draughts.
No extra blankets in the room.
For:
The Thursday receptionist was very helpful. When we phoned to ask if decaffeinated tea or coffee was available, she said there should be some in the tray. She then offered to run some down to us. When we went out, we picked up some tea/coffee from reception. The receptionist again apologised and was helpful in offering to print out the train times that we enquired about.

Room Tip: Don't know about the rest of the hotel, but would not stay in this room again!
