Holiday Inn Runcorn
Ranked #2 of 3 Hotels in Runcorn
Reviewed April 2, 2013

Decided on a weekend away for Easter weekend with my partner and chose Holiday Inn Runcorn as Chester Zoo was also on the agenda and close by. Firstly, not impressed that we had to queue to check-in as there was only one member of staff on reception. We were told where our room was but not the times of breakfast or if we required any extras e.g wifi access etc.

Once we got to our room we found there was a rip in the quilt cover on the bed, the kettle didn't work unless you stood and held the switch down, there were water marks on the ceiling and dirty marks above the headboard on the wall. We reported this to reception who replaced the kettle and left us another quilt (the quilt was removed the second night though and the other with the rip in it left on the bed)!!! The room was very small, just enough space to move about.

Breakfast had a great selection to choose from - continental (cereals, toast, croissants, cheese) Cooked - sausage, bacon, egg, black pudding etc. They also had a pancake machine which they only filled with ONE pre-mixed bag a day once it was gone that was it so we had to make a beeline for it as soon as we came down. It was a self service breakfast which was nice to have breakfast at your own pace and not rushed. Bread/juice ran out pretty quickly and were slow to refill. Suzanne/Suzanna was very cheery and welcoming on our first morning which we found lifted our mood for the day, so we'd like to say Thank You to her for that. Sunday morning was a little busier and staff were running round to keep up with the amount of people they had dining.

We were rudely awoke on Saturday morning @5.30 by the fire alarm to which we made our way to the car park. There was just one staff member in a visi-vest that we saw. There was no indication on what we should do, where we should stand and no roll call to make sure all guests were accounted for which made me pretty uneasy if this were an actual emergency/fire.

We asked where the nearest supermarket and takeaways were and were told in Frodsham....now not being from the area we were not sure where this was. But staff were not very forth coming with directions!

Unsure whether we would stay here again if visiting the area because of the issues we encountered during our stay.

Stayed in an executive room which was found to be clean, modern and well furnished, albeit on the small side. The bed and pillows were comfortable. Good size TV, small bathroom. All in all very good for the price about £80 inc breakfast. Did not use the wifi as it is a rip off at £3 per hour. We ate in the bar in the evening which is over priced for a pretty average meal with small portions (i.e. £14 for a burger and chips, £12 for a 8" margerita pizza) there is nowhere close by to eat so they have a captive audience. On the upside the breakfast was of a good standard and I have paid a lot more for a poorer breakfast in so called 4/5 star hotels. Would return here without a problem if I am back in the area

Dear duncinmanila
Thank you for taking the time to write your review regarding your recent stay at the Holiday Inn Runcorn.
I am pleased to hear that you found the bedroom clean and comfortable and I am sorry to hear that you were not happy with the evening dining. Unfortunately a lot of our prices are set for us and I can only apologise that a meal deal voucher was not offered to you on check in which is a great way to experience our in house dining for a fraction of the price.
We appreciate you taking the time to comment as without guest feedback it would be impossible to improve our hotel which is something here at the Holiday Inn Runcorn we are striving to do.
I hope to welcome you back in the near future.

Very cheap night since we only paid £34 for the night (not including breakfast) and it fulfilled a purpose so can't complain too much.
The room was adequate and typically furnished for a budget hotel. Bathroom was ok but showing mould in places. However, plugs sparked when turning the kettle on, water ran hot and cold for bath and shower, shower was a trickle at best. Biggest criticism is the hard shutting of adjacent doors meant you had an automatic early alarm whether you wanted it or not. The door to the corridor is paper thin so hearing every conversation is a definite!
As I say, dirty cheap and fulfilled a purpose but wouldn't recommend otherwise.

It's a Holiday Inn, so you know that it's accommodation on a budget. However this hotel is spotless, the rooms are spacious and comfortable and the staff are marvellous! Even the breakfast is brilliant. But the friendliness of the staff is second to none....we were treated like old friends when we returned for a second visit. The bar snacks are fresh and tasty and well worth a try.

Room Tip: The 3rd floor is the ground level floor. You go down to floors 1 and 2 and go up to floors 4 and 5

The hotel offers everything you would expect from a holiday inn. Unfortunately, wifi was not free. The hotel is unfortunately located somewhat far from the village center, and restaurants and shops can only be reached by car. I was therefore obliged to take dinner in the restaurant, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise: good English food, fast and friendly service, and reasonably priced. Adjacent to the hotel is a gym with simple swimming pool - free for hotel guests

Stayed here Friday and Saturday night when visiting family. Male receptionist was miserable upon check-in - didn't want to engage in any type of conversation.

Room ok (first floor) - small but comfortable and a little out dated but had most things you need and would expect. An iron would be nice (there was a trouser press), as woud a complimentary biscuit to go with an early morning cup of tea.

Despite the website only stating a charge of £16 for wi-fi access in bedrooms (no mention of charges in public and conference areas) the grumpy receptionist took great pleasure in advising us that there was no free wi-fi anywhere in the hotel. Very disappointing. As this was a personal trip, it was inconvenient more than anything, but had this been a business trip, I would have paid extra for a room elsewhere with cheaper or even free wi-fi which competitors do offer.

At midnight on the Friday night, we soon realised that the small grumbles mentioned previously were the least of our problems as a group of other rowdy guests decided to have a party in their room! This affected both of us - we had one room at the end of the corridor next to the lifts and stairs where you could hear everyone coming and going, and the other room immediately opposite the party room!

After three calls to reception (and numerous calls from other guests on the first floor as we found out the following day) and some hours later, the night manager was able to locate the "party organiser" in an attempt to stop the disturbance and give other guests a few hours sleep. We were offered to swap rooms and move to another floor, but at 1am wasn't something we really wanted to do so waited until the morning.

The extent of the disturbance was clear the following morning where numerous first floor guests could be found at reception complaining. Feeling a little sorry for the staff (who if I am honest didn't seem very well equipped to deal with the barrage of complaints) we didn't complain again, just asked if the "party" guests would be checking out on Saturday morning - to be told, "no, they are here tonight as well!" Great - another sleepless night.

It doesn't take much organisation to allocate rooms for large parties together, and away from those guests who have come for a peaceful weekend. Perhaps because we had pre-booked and pre-paid we were allocated the older, tattier first floor rooms; but we had still paid for 2 nights sleep, not disturbance.

Saturday night was an improvement, far from quiet and undisturbed up until at least midnight, although no need for the night manager this time.

Breakfast both days was ok. Plenty of choice - hot and cold options. Well stocked as very busy.

Final experience of hotel was as disappointing at the first with another miserable male receptionist checking us out. When asked, "did you have a nice stay" I replied, "apart from Friday night, it was average" - there was no hint of an apology, nor acknowledgement of our spoiled weekend, just "oh yeah, the manager told me he spent all night dealing with that - what a nightmare." I really would have expected staff to be aware of the situation, be briefed on how to deal with it, and at the very least, show some sensitivity.

All in all, rooms need updating and lack basic facilities of the 21st century - iron, cheap or free wi-fi and a biscuit to go with tea, although this does seem to be a generic Holiday Inn trait and not exclusive to Runcorn.

Reception staff need training in how to allocate rooms to large groups, and more importantly, basic customer service! You could learn a lot from the Holiday Inn at Leicester where service is much better.

I think I'll try the Premer Inn next time.

Room Tip: First floor rooms were very tired looking. Ask if there are any functions or large group bookings a...

We have stayed in this hotel before and it was ok.Check in was good but when we got to our room.Oh dear.It was tiny and boiling hot.The air con was below par.I have not got over there not being any drawers they had been nailed in.The tap in the sink was ferocious ! We were attending a convention there. We had lunch in Bar.I think £11 for a steak sandwich a bit steep but it was very nice.No free WI FI in lounge or anywhere around £9.00 a day.We had a buffet on the first evening which was very nice and the conference meeting was very comfortable air con on when needed. We had a sit down meal on Saturday oh dear the braised beef was appalling and the goats cheese tart meal was very dry.Portions were on small side. Our friends had to change rooms at 11.30p.m. because toilet was blocked and other friends changed room because of the unbearable heat. There was a generator or something that rumbled on all night.Breakfast was nice except for the slowest toast machine in the world.
It's a shame because we really expect more from a Holiday Inn.

Room Tip: Don't accept a room on first or second floor.Apparantly these have not been refurbed.
