“Canal Festival”
Reviewed February 6, 2013

Last Year I attended a number of events on the Rochdale Canal during their annual festival. They held at least 50 attractions for people of all ages and at all times of the day and night. I particularly enjoyed the Lantern Parade in Todmorden and exploring the underground canals in Manchester. I will be looking to go again this year which I believe will be held from 27th July until 4th Aug. and will include the adjacent canals.

“Relax & excersice”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

I regularly walk from Litleborough station along the canal towards Yorkshire, fantastic scenery as the canal rises & then falls over the pennines. You can stop at Walsden, Todmorden, Hebden Brige, Sowerby Bridge, Mythomroyd, Sowerby bridge and further. All of these places have a train station so you can start finish anywhere and get the train back. Lots of places to stop for refreshment and food. Relax, wander enjoy

The Rochdale Canal crosses the rugged heights of the Pennines from Manchester to Sowerby Bridge. The steep climb means lots of locks and an exhausting but exhilarating journey with stunning views.

For boaters, this canal is a peaceful place to escape the crowds. The towpath is probably the easiest walking route through the Pennines, taking you into the heart of the hills at a relatively gentle gradient. However, there is also plenty of access to more challenging routes for serious hiking.

The Rochdale Canal re-opened to boats in 2002 after an ambitious volunteer restoration project that brought an end to more than 50 years without through navigation. Obstacles had included a supermarket built on the line, two motorways, countless road blockages, and a scheme to fill the channel with concrete.

“Dodge the dog muck and fast bikers”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

Like a lot of places in Littleborough, there is a real problem with dog fouling. There is no seperate bike path and they just seem to come out of nowhere. Not a safe place either in certtain parts as reported in the local paper when a man was mugged for his bike!
