“A lovely break - great hotel, staff, service and food”
Reviewed December 26, 2008

We booked Christmas at Norton Grange after reading the reviews on this site and I can say that I was totally overwhelmed at how fantastic it was!

The hotel rooms looked newly decorated and were lovely and warm, the food was really great - much better than I had anticipated for a Christmas break with inclusive meals. As a vegetarian I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and thought that had gone into the choices.

The staff were really friendly and professional throughout and there were lots of nice attention to detail throughout the stay.

As a number of other people have commented the spa is absolutely wonderful and would be worth the stay on its own.

I stayed here on a girlie spa break. The spa is beautiful - the pool is great, everything is clean and new, there's a good variety of rooms/treatments incl an ice room and a nicely-fragranced steam room. I had an Indian head massage and it was brilliant - the spa staff are friendly and very efficient. The hotel is nice enough - not very inspiring decor and it feels quite cold and soulless. Our room was clean and nicely decorated though. The staff appear to be poorly trained and/or unmotivated. We were in the lift when it broke down, and we were shouting for help for a good ten minutes before the lift started moving again. The emergency phone in the lift wasn't working. When we got out, no one was there to apologise to us - we had to go and track down the manager. He wasn't very sympathetic and gave us a bog-standard "I can't comment on that" response when we mentioned the faulty emergency phone in the lift. We were very disappointed by this. At dinner that night, we had quite bad service (wine not being brought out, some basic items of food not available, staff having to be asked for things several times), and the room itself was deathly quiet and grim. Not a nice atmosphere for having dinner! I think this hotel is OK if you eat elsewhere and make full use of the spa facilities. Just avoid the staff and everything else is OK!

We spent last night at this hotel, after reading the reviews I wasn’t looking forward to going. When we arrived the receptionist Jenny? Was really nice, we got checked in fine no problems, got to the room which was lovely, very comfy and just decorated. Opened the window to get rid of the paint fumes the headed off to the spa. Had an amazing time using all the different rooms, and the Jacuzzi, finished off with a swim before heading back to our room for a shower before dinner. We called for the lift, the 4 of us climbed in, pressed the button and off we went....actually no. The lift got stuck between floors and we were stuck in it for 15 minutes, screaming banging trying to get someone’s attention. We sounded the alarm which said "hold button for 5 seconds and you will be put through to an operator" NOT TRUE...we held the button in for 60 seconds hoping someone would here us. Now I can look back and laugh but I didn’t find it funny at the time. Eventually got out and the remark I had from the duty manager was "sorry I can’t comment on that" when I told him what had happened NO apology. Anyway after a bottle of wine, shower etc we headed on down to the restaurant. After being told there was no parmesan for the Caesar salad we eventually got it, at the same time as our drinks! 4 of us eating 4 Caesar salads, we had 2 chicken breasts between us and 5 anchovies and max 18 lettuce leafs...this was it?! - Anyway we complained about this and again the deputy manager was around who left our lovely BUT SLOW waitress to sort it out. Eventually she spoke to him who told her to knock the wine off the bill, plus the lemonades and give us free puddings. This went down well. The bar had no atmosphere and we ended up taking another bottle of wine (which ain't cheap) to our room to finish. We visited the spa again at 10 am this morning, had the most amazing back massage from Samantha, she was brilliant (book her!!). The spa is lovely and clean and very relaxing. After we visited the pool, Jacuzzi, sauna's, steam room then the ice room before packing and heading home.

I will be booking this again as i did still have an enjoyable time, but next time i will be avoiding the restaurant, lifts and bar!

Going against my normal practice, I read other reviews on this site only AFTER visiting Norton Grange....had I done so before, I probably would not have booked.
My wife and I are back home after a two-night stay, which overall was pleasant. As other reviewers have indicated, the "Spa" is very much the jewel in the crown, indeed I would suggest that it is this facility which gained the fourth "star" as otherwise the hotel is a perfectly acceptable 3-star establishment.
Room (334) was clean (although the wardrobe doors were not properly fitted to their tracks), bathroom spotless - but why the cheap plastic tumblers and the one-biscuit-per-person ration?
Breakfast on both mornings was excellent - quick, pleasant service, wide choice of cold food and tasty big portions of cooked - although I prefer my mushrooms non-cremated thank you.
In all, some basic service issues - like a missed morning call and a fairly uninspiring bar food menu - hold this hotel back a bit; it manages to go from Travelinn basic to 4 star excellent and back again rather too easily.

  • Liked — Spa area, excellent breakfast
  • Disliked — Nothing particularly poor - just a wee bit of detail lacking

We decided to give this place another try as again our first choice was fully booked.
This time we stayed Sat & Sun on B&B rate only.
Check in was fine, we arrived just minutes before a large wedding party luckily.
The room was on the second floor and was large and clean - no complaints.
The leisure facilities were excellent again and we spent alot of time here.
Our one big let down again was breakfast on the Sunday morning - the hotel just cannot cope.
As opposed to taking table order last time, this time they had a hot buffet with staff dishing it out as you went along the queue.
Firstly they constantly ran out of food then the queue was huge as people were waiting for the rest of their breakfast to be cooked!
My husband managed to get almost a full cooked breakfast except for 1 or 2 basic’s, but after 2 attempts of queuing i was unlucky enough to only receive egg and sausage as everything else was gone.....15 min wait on Bacon was mentioned at one stage!!
I can honestly say between cold toast, frozen butter and lack of hot food i would certainly not pay for breakfast here on a Sunday ever again.
I will say tho breakfast on a Monday morning is a completely different experience and you would not recognise the service from the misery of the previous day!
My advise book room only on a Saturday night if staying.

Stayed in an executive room which was ok but extremely cold! There was also no hot water the following morning.

Hotel corridors smelt odd and the place was dead!

Food and drink at the hotel was very very expensive and not very good. It was £18 for the cheapest bottle of rose wine. We had breakfast at the hotel and i would not recommend it to anyone who has to pay for it themselves.... luckily we were there on business so it didn't matter too much!

Swimming pool and leisure facilities were very good though.

Arrived late (approx 11pm) at the hotel, and the first thing that happened was we got checked into a room that was being redecorated. The was no bed in the room, it stank of paint and there were ladders everywehre. So we went back to reception who really couldnt be bothered and they spent about 15 mins looking for a key to another room, but the key had gone missing (they still use real keys) so we had to wait and wait. When we eventually got into our room it was about midnight. Our room overlooked the hotel's courtyard and lucky us...there was a party going on, it looked like a school leaving party or something and the music and people kept us away till past 3am. The reception staff during our whole stay really didnt seem bothered about anything, they didnt even notice that they hadnt charged us for any of our food and drink during our stay!! ooops. But the breakfast is very nice but not good enough to make up for the boring hotel. Also the spa facilities were very nice, probably the nicest thing about the hotel.
