“Food might be good but we will never find out!”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

This is a really nice pub but so badly let down by the awful attitude of the staff. We visited for lunch yesterday and the bar area was busy, but we found a table and were about to get a drink and order when the waiter told us bluntly that the table was someone else's.

We politly asked if there were any spare tables as we wanted some lunch (we would have happily waited at the bar with a drink for a while), and our answer was shrug of the shoulders and "Don't know". Absolutely no customer service whatsoever - everyone seemed completely
disinterested in the fact that we were there.

Some staff training required urgently.

“Expensive but enjoyable”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

The Baum is by far the nicest pub in Rochdale and is priced to reflect this, despite that I make a point of brining any visitors here and have a good night each time.

My only complaint is the selection on the menu which is overpriced and not very varied. Worth a visit if staying in Rochdale for a short time

(The only pub I'd be happy to recommend in the town).

“Great Traditional British Pub, great variety of real ales and pub meals”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

There are not many great traditional olde style pubs like the Baum (meaning TREE in German).

It is situated right in the heart of Rochdale Town Centre on a little cobbled cul de sac next to the CO-OP Museum.

The Baum has been recommended many times to me over the last 2 years or so but this was my first time visiting for our usual Tuesday night dining out experience.

The pub was busy, there were plenty of staff on hand to get a table ready and take our order.

There is a great pub Menu with daily specials and this pub is very well know for its top quality and range of Real Ale beers and Lagers. It Has just won the National Prize of 1st place in the CAMERA Guide, it has come second in years gone by.

The German Lager was so good that I drank mine whilst the barman was completing my order. :-)

We ordered typical British traditional Pub style food, ;-) Cheese & Onion pie n chips, rag pudding n chips, ploughmans lunch , cheesy chips n chips and an extra portion of...... Chips. ;-).

There was a variety of other meals from sandwiches, soups, Tapas, Beef, Salmon etc.

We all enjoyed our food very much, price wise it was around £6 to £7 a head it arrived timely, was very tasty, well presented. At this price range you can't compare the food to a Restaurant but it was very good food among its peers shall we say. (other Pubs).

The atmosphere was very good, it strook me that this Pub has a wide variety of clientele, from beer drinkers, locals, the curious, old , young and families. The pub is split into 3 or 4 areas with a focal central bar, there were several people dining as well as a large party of 17.

I highly recommend the Baum and will definitely visit again as it adds a new dimension to our varied local weekly meals out at a reasonable price.

“Mediocre Pub Grub”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

Read the reviews on Trip Advisor and based upon reviews called in for a mid week lunch.
The place was quite busy (good sign) and the menus and specials boards made for tempting reading. Pleasant staff and decent selection of beers. So good so far. Food orders are taken and paid for at the bar, so a bit fast food style of operation. Old fashioned type of place, plain wood tables and chairs, cutlery handed to you in paper napkin. Beer mats decorate the upper part of the surrounding walls.

Opted for the plate cheese and onion pie with hand cut chips and peas from the "specials" board.
Portions were large and whilst the pie could have been good, it was totally ruined by it's luke warm
and soggy pastry, due no doubt, to a brief encounter with the microwave oven. The hand cut chips
would be better described as potato wedges, these being juxtaposed alongside a portion of tinned processed peas.

Perhaps not fair to judge this place on the offerings we ordered. However, if you cannot get a simple dish off the specials board right then quite clearly it would be tempting fate to order anything requiring a far greater degree of culinary expertise. Seems to be a sort of pub/ winebar serving food, frequented by middle aged "ladies that lunch" A most disappointing lunchtime experience. Don't waste your money. There are far better places around town.
