“Lovely food and setting, rude service”
Review of La Marina

La Marina
Ranked #2 of 50 Restaurants in Portishead
Certificate of Excellence
Description: Our passion for food stems from our heritage and homeland Sorrento, Italy. This small town along the costal line of the Amalfi is notoriously known for its mouth-watering dishes. After living and working in Sorrento for many years we are proud to share our experiences and infuse our dishes with southern Italian undertones. Our philosophy is simple, we believe that food only tastes great when it is locally sourced, fresh, delivered daily and made by people who know how to cook. We would expect nothing less if we went to a restaurant to eat. That is why we practice this every day at La Marina as we want our customers to relish every bite.

The small, intimate setting of La Marina is lovely. It is always busy and popular. The three of us had a lovely two course meal to celebrate birthdays. My starter was a little disappointing (half an oven baked avocado), but my main (veggie calzone and chips) was a lot better, tasty and a generous portion. I particularly enjoyed the Rose wine.
However, it was a struggle getting anyone’s attention to order food and drinks. It felt like we were an inconvenience! We asked to see the specials so the waiter/owner stomped off and dumped the board next to us. Not a word or explanation. We then had to wait another ten minutes to order. We ate our starters and mains, and when our plates were cleared we were asked if we would like desserts. We were full so we declined. We received a sour-faced expression and he walked off. Not asked if we wanted another drink or coffee or even our bill. We eventually paid but didn’t feel like tipping after the repeated rudeness and indifference to our presence. Such a shame as we love the food there, and we have been three times, but can’t stand the rude owners, which is so off-putting. They need a friendly front-of house staff to tend to customers.

Arrived without booking a table. But one was found after a few minutes but only for 9i0mins which was fine as we just wanted to eat and leave.First class Italian menu including pasta dishes. Knowledgeable and attentive staff. Parking wasn't easy and I imagine weekends are difficult.. Very good value considering the quality of the food.

First class Italian menu including pasta and local fish dishes. Attentive knowledgeable staff. Parking can be difficult at weekends and disabled access is via a somewhat circuitus route. Very good value considering the quality of the food.

The food was excellent. We were a large party. The only downside was that three of us had to wait for our vegetables to come out.

Travelled an hour to get there. Says car park but only room for 6 cars and some spaces taken by staff!! Lovely setting and friendly staff, swift service. Regrettably food did not come up to expectations. Portions very small (served on large plates), no bread in sight and quality mediocre. Most of the clams with my very small sea bass fillet were all shell and no clam, and they actually served it with one clam unopened! Best part was the double expresso at the end which was excellent. Probably best to give the food a miss and enjoy a glass of wine and nice coffee outside watching the boats come and go through the sea lock. Disappointing.
