A grade II listed Georgian house perched on the crest of a hill, with fabulous views towards the distant Pennines. So far so good. But the house has been extended, not always in sympathetic architectural style, to create a huge and successful venue for weddings, banquets etc. If you don't enjoy the sound of a good party, you may have a problem here.
You can stay in a large oak-beamed room with a view, but the cheaper rooms are at the back and fairly utilitarian. In room 18 I got a comfy bed, nice duvet, and a very low-pressure shower. Staff were mostly friendly and helpful. No continental breakfast. Wi-fi unreliable.
The hotel is edge-of-town and a bit car-oriented. Nowhere set aside for bike parking, and a 20-minute walk into Pontefract. But it is on a bus route.
Please note Tripadvisor lists this place twice: as a hotel, and a restaurant. You may want to read both sets of reviews.More
