We were visiting London for the Paralympic games and chose Cranbrook hotel for its good value, free carpark and it being only a 15 minute train journey from the Olympic Park. We were quite surprised when we saw the hotel because it looks quite different to the pictures but it looked clean and in good order which is the main thing. We arrived 30 minutes before check in just on the off chance. Unfortunately our rooms were not ready yet but the people on reception were extremely helpful and offered to send someone straight over to clean the rooms, however, as we were planning on going straight to London centre we decided to check in when we returned later that night. The area in which the hotel resides is not the nicest in London but not the worst either. The train station was only a 10 minute walk and there were plenty of grocers which were open late. When we got back and checked in at about 11pm we were allocated rooms in completely separate buildings which we found slightly odd as we had booked our rooms more than 6 months earlier. My husband and I offered to go in the room in a different building. We had to go outside, walk up the side of the hotel and through a gate with barbed wire on it at the back which took us down an alley which had chalet style rooms along it. We felt a little concerned about this set up but that was probably heightened by how late it was at night. When we got to the room we were pleasantly surprised as it was light and modern with a big tv and a nice ensuite. We initially thought we picked the short straw but actually our room was nicer than the one in the main hotel. The rest of our party's rooms in the main part of the hotel were older and had an odd smell about them. There was, however, no hairdryer in the rooms (that we could find) but we didn't ask as it was so late at night and I didn't fancy walking outside to reception in my PJ's! We all slept ok - it wasn't the best nights sleep because the beds were not main properly and there was not a proper cover on the duvet but it wasn't a major issue. The next morning breakfast was good and there was a good selection with hot items which could be ordered and cold items you could help yourself to. The selection wasn't the most varied and some of the hot items were slightly unusual but there was enough to satisfy most people.

All in all I think this hotel is pretty good for its location and value for money. I would stop again but probably not for more than one night.

I wasn't looking forward to staying here after recent reviews but, I'm pleased to say, it was really rather nice.
Yes, there was a strange smell in parts of the hallway but not in my room and was largely gone the next day.
First, the bad point, and that was sleep quality. It has the hard foam breeze block type pillows which I struggle to sleep on and my room was above the reception and any talking (plenty) came straight through my floor so very little sleep.
Everything else was very good. The receptionist (Irish, I think) was friendly and helpful and was expecting my arrival. I thought I'd got the wrong room at first as it was a bit of a push to open it but the room itself was clean, bright and airy. Not huge, but a decent size with 2 armchairs and a table plus the usual bench type table with not only tea and coffee but hot chocolate as well, which is not common. On the pillows were a small chocolate-nice.
You had to make sure you connected to the strongest wifi (free) signal (there are a few throughout the building) and occasionally it struggled to connect, but it was usually very good. I measured the speed twice, first 12Mb and the 2nd 25Mb, very impressive.
The shower was a good size and worked well and there was plenty of hot water.
There seems to be plenty of car parking.
I went during the Olympics and they realised that some people had to get to events early or had to leave early for onward transport so they brought forward the start of breakfast to 6am which was a thoughtful touch. Last breakfast 10am.
I went for the 6am breakfast and even at that time of the morning the staff in the dining room were very cheerful, friendly and couldn't do enough to help. The breakfast itself was one of the best I've had. Tea/coffee/ fruit juices, hot options(good), cereals, nice fruit bowls, muffins, biscuits, toast and probably something else I didn't even notice at 6am!
The position is good, only 5 mins to walk to Ilford train station which looked a lot further on the map.
It's a pity about the sleep quality otherwise it would have got 4 stars easily.

Room Tip: Don't get room M7 above reception.

Dear Sir/Madam
We are very sorry to learn that you did not have a good experience at the Hotel. As you may be aware that during Olympic period all the hotels in London including us was very busy and perhaps some over sight could have happend. We asked the breakfast team and they cannot recall but sent their apologies in any event.
We do apologise again for the trouble.
Many thanks

Stayed here for a night to go see the Olympics. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the area is multi-cultural not frightening! The breakfast was better than expected. My only complaint was that the beds were very lumpy and difficult to get comfortable in. Handy for Ilford train station and Stratford Park.
