The staff are brilliant here so friendly! I find this chain pricey for what you get. But other than that it's good :-)

the food was ok, what you would expect from a chain type eating place - not much atmosphere, but fun if you take children x

I had heard of Smith & Western's "cowboy" themed chain of restaurants but never had an opportunity to experience one until now. My wife and I tried out one on a Thursday evening at about 6.45pm.

This particular restaurant is quite large and divided into a number of sections. The "cowboy" theme is evident everywhere, with "Wanted" posters, cowhides, and other "Western" paraphernalia on the walls, and with waitresses dressed as cowgirls.

Food is very much geared towards American carnivore tastes, with a range of steaks but also a number of concessions to other palates. I opted for Cajun chicken and my wife chose a Mexican dish.

The food was okay, but unremarkable. Service was courteous and pleasant but a little slow. The background music was indomitably cowboy themed, but could hardly be called "background" as it was too loud for easy conversation. I have to say that I am puzzled why restaurants so often seem to feel they must inflict overwhelming decibels on their guests: what on earth do they hope to gain? All it reveals is a lack of discernment as to what makes for a convivial evening.

If deciding to book at this particular restaurant, one should bear in mind that as it is so large it is a popular venue for children's birthday parties. There were no less than four parties going on whilst we were there. A tradition of the restaurant appears to be to bring out a large ice-cream sundae with an indoor sparkling firework in it whilst singing "Happy Birthday" to the accompaniment of hammering a musician's triangle. All of which is fine and dandy when it happens once or twice, but begins to get a bit wearing by the fourth repetition.

Another surprising point was that although the restaurant is large, with many people in it and lots of cooking going on, the room temperature was still rather cool at the side farthest from the entrance, where we were seated. Possibly we might have done better with seats in the middle, but we didn't want to be too close to the various parties.

Overall, we would probably recommend this venue as a good choice for children's groups, but wouldn't rate it highly for adult diners.
