Best Western Plus Grim's Dyke Hotel
Ranked #1 of 9 Hotels in Harrow
Certificate of Excellence

Staying at Grim's Dyke is a bit like entering a time machine and drifting back to Victorian and Edwardian England. The house has an impressive pedigree, most notably as the home of Sir William Gilbert – of Gilbert & Sullivan fame. He drowned in the lake in 1911. More recently the house has been used as a TB sanatorium and now as a hotel.

We were there mid-week and there weren't many other overnight guests. The 49 acres of grounds are very popular with day visitors but we found that towards evening the place quietened down. The staff were all very professional and helpful, and they successfully reflected the historical dignity of the house without resorting to any tacky 'faux history' gimmicks.

The house and grounds retain much of the character of their Victorian roots but important bits like plumbing and heating have been discretely upgraded. We stayed in an original Victorian-era room upstairs in the main house and found it to be charming and quite adequate for a short stay. The bed was good but the Victorians seemed to believe that furniture generally should be elegant rather than comfortable. The floor creaked and the door was warped, but these eccentricities fitted in with the historical ambience. We had a great view of the grounds through the very old lead-light windows, and saw a fox on the lawn soon after dawn. The first room that we were given had no hot water but the manager quickly rectified this by moving us to another room. We seemed to be the only guests in the main house that night, so this wasn't a problem for them. More-modern accommodation is available in the Lodge which is a separate building a few minutes walk through the grounds.

We found Grim's Dyke to be a great place for a slightly quirky and historical mid-week stopover. It was quiet, dignified and sophisticated but be aware that on weekends, with major weddings and gatherings on site, it could have a very different atmosphere.

We only saw our room which was down long long motel style corridors. It was grubby and shockingly shabby and we left asap the next morning. The main building looks delightful when you arrive but as soon as you enter you feel doubts. I assume it is there for the golfers but really not fit for anything else and hugely overpriced but there is very little else in the area.

We had guests attending a family wedding arriving from a number of countries, each with a variety of bookings and different requirements. Every one was made to feel special by the staff at Grim's Dyke. As parents of the bride we had quite a lot on our plate and the service provided by all the staff at the hotel took a big weight off our shoulders. All overseas guests as well as the UK based family and friends have no hesitation in recommending Grim's Dyke and in re visiting this lovely hotel.

Although the hotel was only 30 minutes from my house, a family gathering made it easier to stay than take a cab. I'm so glad I did. I loved this hotel, it really felt that I was in Devon or somewhere remote and not a couple of miles from Harrow town centre which hasn't fared so well over the last decade or so.

My room was in the newer part of the grounds (circa 1982) and was clean and comfortable and a short walk from the main hotel.

The main hotel has a wonderful character, little rooms off rooms and a real feeling of history with a cosy little bar.

The Restaurant (Gilberts) was superb, both food and service.

And apart from all that, the cost is not bad either, and that goes for the room, restaurant and bar.

The only possible downside is that you will have to drive or get a cab, it's not easy to get there otherwise and there is a long drive up to the hotel. There is adequate parking in the grounds.

I'd say this was an ideal place to stay if visiting Wembley Stadium or Arena (although there are closer hotels of course) and will require a cab to Harrow on Hill station.

All that's really missing is a leisure centre.

I will definately find a reason to return.

I cant comment about the rooms and other service at the hotel but I can tell others about the food. We have visited a few times now for sunday lunch and evening meals. Everything is well cooked and delicious. The service is impeccable. I cant recommend the restaurant enough, well worth a visit.
