Went to Fiddlers a few years back with a group of friends and had such a great evening, it was a Friday night and the place was packed. the food was great and being able to have a dance afterwards made it a really good night.
Went back there on a Saturday night in June for my sister's hen-night! What a complete disaster. Apart from a table of 4 who left shortly after we arrived, we were the only ones there all night and there was only about a dozen of us. There was just no atmosphere and it was such a disappointment.
We stupidly decided to give it one more shot for my mum's 70th birthday meal and even asked when booking whether there were other bookings that night and were told yes. Yet again there was a table of 2 and they soon left leaving us alone for the rest of the evening. It was a bit of a shambles to be honest and not what we were expecting for a special occasion. The food was fine but we booked there for the experience and atmosphere and there wasn't one.
Sorry to say will give this a wide berth unless you have enough people to take up the entire restaurant !

Starters and mains excellent, desserts okish! This place has a great atmosphere and the owner and waiter couldn't do more for you. It's competatively priced, yes the decor is "traditional" but it's truley a charming place. Were there on a Friday night and when a group of 8 left at around 11pm it was just us four, but we weren't mad to feel we had to leave infact just the opposite. More people should use this restaurant as it's a great night out, it should be full almost every night!

Now before I begin my review, some of you may be misguided by my high rating of Fiddler's. There are arguable more cons to this place than pros, and yet my cousins and I find ourself coming back again and again.... Here's why:

-The Good-
Excellent homemade italian food at ridiculously cheap prices (only on Tastecard mind you, which is 50% no matter the size of your group...fantastic. Beg steal or borrow one if you must)
Any starter or main we have ordered has been piping hot, downright delicious and generously portioned.
That's it. Oh and the main old guy host is very sweet and eager to please.
I've been lucky enough to have such good company that every visit is an absolute laugh, hence the high rating. But if you are a fussy type who is quick to complain... Perhaps read on.

-The Bad-
(Though I'm trying to defend these points to justify my 4 stars)
We tend to book a table on a weeknight and we are always, without fail, the only group in the entire restaurant. We don't go there for the atmosphere so it's not a problem.
As other reviewers have mentioned, this place is pretty dated. So what? I rather like the old English pub style to be quite honest. If you want a modern place with no character or history why not go to a chain italian instead...? Plenty of rubbish generic ones to choose from.
If you're in a hurry this may not be the best place. Though the host is a sweet, funny man, he has about as much speed as a snail. After all it is usually just him in the front of house. We often wonder if the reason service is so slow is because not only is he serving the food, taking orders,
taking bookings and probably cashing up... He must be cooking the stuff too! Of course it's all in gest, but honestly there is about a 45 minute wait each between taking orders, being served and getting the bill. On average a 2 course meal in that place, from entry to exit, takes 2 and a half hours. And that's not because we're just having a good time and talking (which we are anyway so we don't mind so much)
Now last and most certainly least..... The desserts. My gosh these DESSERTS!! How can the savoury food be so delectable when these desserts haven't even been given a first thought, let alone second look. And yet, purely for the amusement factor, we give in and order different ones everytime to see if there is any saving grace.
They all pretty much taste like they're from Iceland... Or worse. We had a good laugh over the "panna cotta"... More like a milky overdone jelly, coffee and chocolate flavour, which looked more like a wobbling boob and tasted about the same. For shame... Destroying the beautiful and delicate panna cotta name with that abomination. Though how we laughed.
Then the cheesecake was like Asda Smart price frozen rubbish, but right at the back of the freezer stylee. The profiteroles were edible but still tasted like smart price. The home made apple cake wasn't too bad if it wasn't for the "custard" that came with it.... I kid you not it was a cross between cheese sauce and sour milk. We nearly threw up from the smell let alone attempting to taste it. It was as if they had stirred it (not very well as it was lumpy) with their feet!! Vile. But again a lot of laughs were had. Methinks it was a few months old carton of custard that had gone off many moons ago. Or out of date cheese sauce.

In conclusion; please do visit this place. The mains and starters are just delightful, no dodgy tum like when u eat in chain restaurants and KNOW you've eaten out from that stodgy feeling. It's like eating at home. Just AVOID AVOID AVOID the desserts... Unless if course you want to poke fun. Teehee

We booked the private room above the restaurant for an 18th birthday party. It was ideal for this, accommodating 30 to 40 people with their own bar and small dance floor. Tony the restaurant owner was very accommodating and met all our needs readily. and the package price was very reasonable.

The restaurant is a little run down and shabby looking but we were ok with that for a group of teenagers. The food choice is old-style Italian: pizza, lasagna, spaghetti etc and the style is a family trattoria but it seems stuck in the 70s.

However on the night of the party we were rather let down by the food service and quality. it arrived late, the orders were wrong and the food itself not very nice to eat.

I would try the restaurant as a normal customer in case dealing with over 30 orders caused the problems with the food but I'm not very hopeful. This feels like somewhere that needs a visit from Gordon Ramsey or Alex Polizzi to bring it into the present day!

Have eaten here a couple of times using our Taste Card, fantastic value, huge portions and very big menu.

Everything was piping hot and served by very nice waiter.
