The food here is always great value for money but...
We visited mid afternoon so they were not too busy but there was nobody there to greet or seat us and after waiting for some time I had to go and search for someone. We were seated and drink orders were taken but then we noticed that the cutlery was quite dirty. Some of our group went to get their food whilst I waited but our waitress had disappeared. As our guests were returning with their food I managed to catch a passing manager and asked for clean cutlery. He said 'they've been through a machine' (which was of no interest to me) and then proceeded to take out some knives and wipe the blades with his fingers! We eventually got some reasonable cutlery but no apology. This place is still good but can be let down by such 'can't be bothered' staff attitudes.

Excellent value for money with both a wide range of carvery meats on offer along with really good choice of veg. Staff are very friendly and efficient. Lovely setting. Only downside is not being able to book a table and so had a 45 minute wait,

My review will echo many of the negative comments made by others. We attempted to book a table for 8 for Sunday lunch but were told "no, just turn up". It was almost 2pm and we had an hour wait then they commented that it would have to be 2 tables of 4 away from each other. Reluctantly we accepted. 15 minutes later they decided they could do a table for 8 after all. We all chose the carvery but were astounded by the mean portions of meat - I have had more in a sandwich!! Admittedly the selection of vegetables was good especially the roasted onions. However the cauliflower was cold. A stressed-out waitress was serving us and probably 4 other tables and, unfortunately, we had to ask several times to order drinks. Also they were so slow clearing our plates that we eventually decided to do the task ourselves. Again we had to ask several times to make our desserts order and when they finally arrived 3 were wrong. Likewise the bill took ages to arrive.
As a family this was one of our favourite venues. However, now each visit seems to be worse than the previous one. This occasion was noisy, crowded as we had to pull our chairs in to let other diners pass, with very slow service. As another reviewer recently commented the toilets (Gents at least) smelt as if they had not been serviced for a fortnight - not acceptable. I notice that the restaurant is now closed for almost 2 weeks for refurbishment - I only hope the manager and staff go on a training course meanwhile. Certainly not what we expect of such lovely surroundings.

We came to Toby Carvery for lunch as a big group - 12 of us. We called first and they advised just to turn up and it should be fine and we were unable to book, we later found out that we could book for groups over six. We turned up at 1.30 and were told it would be an hour wait. What we were not told was that another big group had just sat down and they could only sit one big group at a time. If we known that we would not have waited. We waited an hour and a half being told we would be next, and had asked a few times when the table would be ready. Two hours later they seated us, when asked to speak to the manager to complain he said he was the manager. He was rude and told us that he informed us there would be a wait. They offered us one bottle of wine between 12 of us - which we refused because most of us was driving. So they then said everyone gets free ice cream. Costing them a whopping 3.00 a head!!!!! When we finally were seated, the service was very slow. We were ignored. We weren't offered any drinks. and it took half an hour for them to remove our plates and offer desserts, which then took 45 mins to arrive and arrived separately. Added to that there is only one set of toilets which were filthy, blocked, smelly and gross. It took us over four hours to get food and leave. Don't bother going. Poor service, rude staff, filthy. Take your family elsewhere!!!!!
