“A wonderful Swiss experience!”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

I stayed at the Hotel Piz Buin in September. While it was for only one night, I wish I had the time to stay much longer. The Hotel is located in a very beautiful Swiss village that you will want to take some time to wander through. The village itself is most often associated with the story "A Bell for Ursuli", a classic Swiss children's story. After a few days of hiking, Piz Buin was exactly what I was looking for. the staff and owners were very friendly, and after a wonderful soak in the wood fired outdoor hot tub (worth the trip alone), I was treated to one of the best meals ever. (the lamb was awesome!). There is plenty of great hiking in this area, and ideally i would have liked another day or two to explore some of the surrounding area. The rooms were comfortable and after a long few days of hiking and with a great meal, I had a wonderful and restful sleep. What makes stays at places such as the Piz Buin so special is the family that owns and operates the hotel. They really made sure I had a great time and this is one reason I love Switzerland - it is such a personal experience compared to North America. Thanks Hans Peter, Natalia, and all the staff!

Guarda is a very atmospheric village, and the Piz Buin is a good hotel to stay in while in Guarda. The south facing rooms with balcony, though fairly small, have an excellent view, and the hotel is in a quiet location at the end of the village. The food is quite good and the staff is friendly, and the hotel makes a good center for touring the Engardine if you don't mind the very curvy road to the village from the valley. We especially enjoyed the walk to the next village on a small road behind the hotel. The only problem we found was that once you have reserved a room, they will not let you cancel any of the days if your plans have to change. We understand the hotel's point of view, but would have appreciated a bit more flexibility when our plans had to change.

Room Tip: Balcony rooms have wonderful views.

Switzerland is famed for its often poor service but this really took the cake and we still cannot believe how we were treated at this hotel.
We were visiting the village. As it started to rain and we were right next to the Piz Buin, we (3 adults, 2 children) decided to stop there for a drink on the covered terrace. Unfortunately, all the tables were full. We moved to the side of the building (also covered) where there was just one small table with one chair only. We were hesitating if we should wait for a table or not when the waitress approached us and without a smile or a greeting asked us what we wanted to drink. I told her that we were hoping to get a table and seats on the terrace (was she expecting us to get our drinks there while standing?! Wth?). She replied always on the same unpleasant tone 'well, it's full and everybody has just arrived so what can I get you?' I told her that since we couldn't get any seats, we would just wait a couple of minutes there for the rain to subdue a bit and leave (we were on the side of the building, absolutely no disturbing anything or anyone). And this was her answer 'no, you cannot do that, this is a restaurant!!' looking really pissed. We simply couldn't believe how unfriendly and rude this woman was, this is just beyond comprehension.
There was no misunderstanding due to the language since I speak German. My friend who is Japanese was utterly shocked as this kind of treatment is absolutely unheard of in Japan and it made me really ashamed to be Swiss.
Needless to say, we keep a really bitter souvenir of this otherwise really cute village.

We just spent one night in this charming hotel as a part of our 5 day biking trip in this area. The staff was very friendly and took care of all of our needs. I would definitely recommend this hotel as a beautiful, peaceful place to stay in the picturesque village of Guarda.

We stayed 1 night (4 of us in 2 rooms) and were really impressed by the standard of the Hotel. The rooms were big, clean & comfortable, recently refurbished with views that are beautiful. We did book well in advance for the better rooms and were delighted with the balcony overlooking the outdoor garden with mountain views in the distance.
We ate in their dining room with good food & lovely service. Breakfast was great, very much like a B&B with good family service.
It was fantastic just walking around the village with remarkable views to the countryside, which are absolutely stunning. The Hotel & village are very peaceful and staying in the mountains is something special.
We found Hotel Piz Buin just like a family run B&B, great personal service & attention with such panoramic views, just wished we could have stayed a few days more.

Room had awesome view of mountains and had a balcony which was lovely, even with cushions for the seats. The hotel has an outdoor hot tub (which could stand to be a little hotter) and a lovely lawn sitting area. Also a nice sauna and steam room.
Only downside was that hotel staff was not super helpful with information for example about the post bus to the train station (necessary if you have any luggage - it is a LONG and STEEP 35-minute hike up from the station).
The barley soup is delicious.
We were lucky to have a room in the newer part of the hotel - the other part had extremely squeaky floors.

I stay in this hotel only for 1 night but I think that is one of the best hotels I ever been (and one of the cheapest also…). We had a room n° 28 (the last room in the second floor) so really quiet, we had a balcony with mountains view (amazing in the morning …) , the beds were comfortable and room was really large, as well as bathroom. Future more, you can use a “hot spot” (jacuzzy) in the hotel garden also with a amazing mountain view (the best evening of my holydays).
The hotel restaurant is for hosts only so you can eat in quiet and then drink some beers outside or on the bar.
Really one of the best quality/price hotel ever.
