“Nice trip when the weather is fine”

You get there only per boat from Ascona or Ronco (most likely also from Locarno) - the costs for the trip incl. entrance fee amount to about 20 CHF.
The island is a nice place, crowded on weekends. It can be visited within one hour. If you are a freak, however, plan for a longer stay.
There are plants from all over the world, nicely group together.
The trip is worthwhile during all seasons with spring and summer probably being more interesting than fall (more plants blooming).

The Isloe di Brissago is a great boat ride from the main land. We took the boat from Locarno on a lovely day which is well worth the hour and 15 mins journey.
The botanical gardens have a lot to offer and it's a lovely walk around. Going earlier in the year (May/ June / July) is probably a better option. As we were there in September there weren't many flowers or plants that were in bloom, however the walk around the island was nice.

These are an amazing set of gardens on an island at the northern end of Lake Maggiore, just in Switzerland, and can be reached by ferry from a number of resorts nearby, e.g. Brissago, Ascona & Locarno, although the ferry can be expensive if you choose one of the longer trips.

The gardens are arranged in regions of the world, and it's incredible seeing Bamboo growing within sight of the Swiss Alps, but the island is protected by weather from the south. It would be hard to find such a variety of plants growing outdoors elasewhere. For the keen plant lover one not to be missed if you're in the area.

The gardens are well laid out and the trails easy to follow. It takes around 2 hours for a leisurely look around the gardens and there is a good restaurant for a drinkand snack before catching the ferry back.

Flowers and plants from 5 continents, relaxing atmosphere, imagine it used to be a private island belonging to the Baroness of Saint-Léger for about 40 years and on the 9th of November 1927 she sold it to Max Emden, doctor in chemistry and mineralogy. The actual house was built in 1928, as you walk through the house you can still see the splendor of how it was. Don't go there too early or too late in the season, May can beautiful but only if there was enough rain in April.
June and September are great months, October can have gorgeous weather at least until the 15th. Take the ferry from Porto Ronco, Locarno or Ascona. From Porto Ronco you can get on a boat every 20 minutes.

We visited this lovely botanical garden as part of our Lago Maggiore Express excursion. It was an excellent way to break up the three hour trip back to Stresa.(one hour from Locarno on the ferry, one hour on the island and then two hours back to Stresa). There wasn't a lot of colour when we visited (compared with Isola Madre and Isola Bella!) – I would suggest earlier in the year. However, if you are a keen gardener or interested in plants, it is a fascinating place, especially the displays of unusual vegetables. The landscaping was beautiful, although there were a couple of areas which were “under construction” - I suspect damaged in the storm which decimated the Villa Taranto. The views were spectacular - loads of photo opportunities! Take lunch or a drink on the terrace and enjoy the fabulous views!

Tip 1: If you are visiting as part of the Lago Maggiore Express from Stresa or the south of Maggiore, you can take the 15.10 ferry from Locarno, spend and hour on the island and catch the last ferry back @ 17.10
Tip 2: If visiting from Italy, you can use euros but the change will be given in Swiss francs. (We used ours to buy postcards and sweets!)
