Schlosshotel Chaste is definitely off the beaten path, located in far southeastern Switzerland, but as far as I'm concerned that is an important part of its charm, a beautiful setting far from the madding crowd. The village and its medieval castle are idyllic, the mountain scenery surrounding the hotel is beautiful, the rooms are informally perfect, the food is excellent by any standard outside of Paris, and the innkeepers are attentive and helpful. Who could ask for more?.
Beautiful setting.
We only spend one night here but will be back
Helpful staff- real sense of tradition and sense of ownership - from time we booked in and even owner helping us to clear ice from car windscreen early in the morning before we left
The restaurant was something out of the ordinary- the Chef prepared the fish in an unique way and was not like anything we have tasted before.
Greatest bathroom set-up for our tour to date.
Easily a 5 star + establishment!
We spent nine nights over late December and New Year in this Relais & Chateau hotel. This absolutely charming hotel has been run by the same family for more than 100 years and the attention to detail and service shows. The hotel itself is set on a high hillside in the tiny (200 person) village of Tarasp overlooking a beautiful Lower Engadin valley and directly below the historic Schloss Chaste (castle). Schlosshotel Chaste may not be the most luxurious hotel we have ever stayed at, but it is certainly one of the most charming, with everything done in impeccable taste and the one-hundred + year-old Arvenholz woodwork is particularly beautiful. The hotel is on a half-pension basis and each and every course that we had was delicious. The restaurant currently "only" has two Michelin "forks" but, having dined in literally hundreds of Michelin-stared restaurants over the past 50+ years, in our opinion the Schlosshotel's restaurant is significantly underrated. Last but not least, the family members are very friendly, hands-on and omnipresent. This was our first visit to the hotel, but most of the other guests are repeat visitors, with some having been coming for 20+ years. This speaks for itself!
We have stayed at the Schlosshotel Chaste three times (2007, 2013, 2016) and have always had the most amazing time there. Gian, Daniella, Rudolf and the rest of the Pazeller family goes out of their way to make sure that you are comfortable and happy at all times. Whether it is picking you up in Scoul after a visit to the baths (a must do!); advising on the best hiking routes, or helping to keep the little ones happy and occupied, or finding you the perfect room, graciousness and professionalism are overflowing. The food: while the menu was always such a treat, we noticed this past visit that the food was even more exceptional. Summer eating outside on the patio is sublime and a bit more 'laid back'. All to say I cannot recommend this place enough. The hotel: Beautiful rooms, impeccably clean and classically Swiss, the building itself is such a gem and piece of history. The region: hiking down to Scoul takes a bit of time but is not difficult. The baths in town are amazing and there is much to explore in the mountains around Tarasp, especially in the summer, fall, spring months. The clientel: The Schlosshotel seems to be most frequented by Europeans (or northern Swiss?) so the hotel still seems like a 'best kept secret' of the region. Thanks again for another amazing stay, Gian-Andrea!
After many very pleasant visits over 15 years, we can vouch that Schlosshotel Chastè maintains course with son Gianni at the helm with his friend talented young Chef Andy. The previous generation maintains an eye over operations which results in a great combination. This is one of the last living examples of what Swiss hospitality used to be. If you're looking for a break in a family atmosphere, a peaceful setting, outstanding & healthy cuisine using the best products... and if you don't want to be with the crowds, this is the place to choose !
