“Beautifull place”

Looking from down up the castle or from the castle looking down, you can imagine how it was centuries ago and how it dominated the area

“exceedingly photogenic castle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2012

One of the main reasons to be in what is a relatively remote part of Switzerland is to see this place. High on a hill and visible for miles, Tarasp Schloss is a very scenic half day tour

“Stunningly situated”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2012

Perching on top of a hill in the picturesque Lower Engadin, Tarasp Castle dominates the valley. The castle remained under Habsburg control right up to the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in Napoleonic times, and though it was never the focus of significant military action, its history opens a window into the history of the Grisons and its neighbours from the High Middle Ages to today.
Though nothing in the castle is original to the location, the interior is well worth visiting. Falling to the cash-strapped new canton of Grisons in the 19th C, the castle was gutted through neglect and pilfering. The saviour of the property was the German industrialist Karl August Lingner, who had made a fortune with the mouthwash Odol. Lingner bought the shell around the turn of the 19th/20th C and proceeded to rebuild it with original period fittings and furnishings from castles, monasteries and manors from the area and farther afield, while at the same time turning it into a luxury home. Money, clearly, was no object.

“Amazing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2011

Probably one of the best maintained castles in Switzerland. One should absolutely follow one of the guided tours to understand its history and what brought it back to today's beauty. We had the pleasure to enjoy a splendid dinner with friends (more than 20 people, catered by the near-by Schlosshotel Chaste Tarasp) including live music in a beautifully antique dining room.
