My vacation in Switzerland this summer was enhanced with my stay at Hotel Bellevue in Braunwald, Glarus. A perfect balance of family vacation enjoyment. Quiet zones for adults, playzones for active and energetic children, gourmet menus, comfortable rooms with breathtaking views. Wonderful!

The website is especially notable.

Room Tip: Request a saouth-facing view.

We spent 2 days with our 2 sons in Maerchenhotel Braunwald. Both, kids and parents are overwhelmed. We had a fantastic familiy room with an even better view.
The staff is very friendly, most know guest (and their children by name). Our sons had been so enthusiastic about the attractions (kindergarten, climbing, pool etc) that they are completely exhausted.
Food is excellent, our kids liked the spaghetti and burger and we had romantic 6-course dinner while knowing that our kids are safe and playing with the childcare.
Was the first time we had been there, but surely not the last stay - we will be back.

In 1976, the current General Manager and owner Martin Vogel and his family transformed the ageing Bellevue into today’s “Fairy-Tale Hotel”. Family holidays and at the same time, holidays away from the family? The Vogels have created the perfect place for families. With a children's world, where TV just can't compete and an adult's paradise, where parents can relax and dine by candlelight.
Every evening, the general manager himself told us a fairy tale before the kids go for dinner. At the same time, parents went for their quite and relaxing candle light dinner.

The place that Marin Vogel and his team created is just perfect for families! Kids have fun and great entertainment, whiles parents were able to relax. The Hotel became famous and the concept a franchising success for many other places.

Despite it's four stars hotel Bellevue is too expensive. Old building got it's charms, but the charm is being destroyed by the dominant Lady of the house who acts like she's a queen of Switzerland. She would be better to cut the guests some slack and not always put her nose into everything.

The hotel just ain't worth four stars and that money. Rooms are quite old and in the shower i saw the silicone isolation was teared, i guess because of the movements of an old house. What also was a total disappointment for me was a cheap broken Ikea-coffee table in the place like that.

Mattresses were too firm for someone who sleeps on his side, and also the pillows were too low. So i can only recommend for back- or belly-sleeper.

One important and for too often forgotten subject: Lights.
During the diner the lights in the Restaurant were far too bright to create a cozy atmosphere, and so were the lights also in sauna. Sauna itself was wrongly build: when you sit on the highes row it is almost impossible to throw water on the rocks.

The hotel is kid-orientated, and that might bother someone without kids. Although kids are having their own diner time earlier than their parents, there is always loud screaming and running kids in the restaurant, who can come to say to their parents that they must go to their room to take a poo. Bon Appetit!

Hotel says that the pets are allowed, that is not the whole truth. The pets must stay in the room during eating, they are not allowed to come to the restaurant.

Something positive: Although diner was nothing spectacular breakfast buffet was great, and one swiss youngster who worked there was doing his job well, without asking too many stupid questions and concentrating to his work.

Dear Mister Payne

Thank you for writing a review on TripAdvisor.

We are happy that you have pointed out some positive aspects of your stay. As well that you have mentioned the youngster who did his job well.

We always try to improve our quality standards and processes. Therefore it is important to get direct feedback from our guests in order to do the improvements. You stayed with us in January 2010 more than 3 years ago. Since your stay many things and processes have changed and have been reorganized. (new management, new owner, new staff).

Therefore we believe your review is not up to date anymore.

It is still correct that we allow pets in the Hotel but not in the dinning room. (we have had unlovely experiences with pets and playing kids).

Many or most of the rooms are renovated and redesigned since your holiday. We have built a new Sauna and Steam Room for adults only in December 2012. The whole Spa zone on the 4th floor is for adults only and perfect for relaxing and enjoying the moment. The hotel itself is still positioned as family friendly hotel where many kids play around in the holiday season. In the period when most kids have to go to school there is even more space and relaxing zone for adults.

We are hoping to welcome you again in the Märchenhotel.

Best regards

I am astonished by the negative review below. We just returned from a week's stay at the Marchenhotel and it was one of the best experiences of my life.

The owners really care about their guests and are there to welcome you when you arrive, show you to your room, explain the menu to you at dinner, serve the children's meal, tell them a story (in German though) - they are amazing. We really felt taken care of - something I have not encountered so far in my travels in the UK or France. We received excellent service from the restaurant staff - we had a dedicated waitress who took care of us, translating the menu for us each evening, making sure that the leftover wine we had from the previous night was waiting for us at our table, filling our glasses while we enjoyed the most delicious six course meal. What we enjoyed most is that our children were having fun in the playroom while we were having our evening meal in peace with the most amazing views of the surrounding mountains and the goats on the 'Golden Gate Bridge'.

So what if the cheese is before the dessert on the menu - the cheese and fruit is buffet so you can help yourself whenever you want!! The even had truffle soup on the menu one evening - mmmm delicious.

I actually found the hotel catered better for my seven year old than three year old as the activities were really geared for older children. They had hotel jobs one day where the extinguished a fire, made pizza in the hotel kitchen and in the evening play waiter / waitress and serve dessert to their parents. My daughter was a bit shy, but Katja (who looks after the kids) and the owner Martin explained everything to her in English. The next day the took the 3 goats out for a walk in the mountains. And on our last evening they had a movie night with popcorn and bags which they made themselves - both my girls loved this.

We had a large, spotlessly clean room with a big patio where we enjoyed the lovely views. The swimming pool was great - warm and very clean with a slide and armbands to borrow (my 3 year old lost her fear of water). We had fabulous hot weather and there are some deck chairs just outside the pool building where one can sunbathe and enjoy the views. There is also an outdoor jaquizzi and a wellness area at the top of the hotel with some fitness equipment and where you can have massages, etc.

They also have a large outdoor play area with a trampoline, tennis courts, climbing wall and of course the mountains to explore. There are two cable cars that run from the village and we went up one day and enjoyed lovely hikes to the Dwarf Baartli's cave and house. There is a restaurant and lovely play area at the top as well, but the restaurant's food there was a bit basic.

The hotel also has listening devices you can borrow, steps in the bathroom, aquarium lift, a cow that gives milk at breakfast and a special little table with everything kids love for breakfast (including Smarties!).

We are English speaking South Africans and we felt very very welcome. Yes most information etc. is in German - but you only need to ask and someone will be happy to help. And after all - you are in Switzerland. Also the childcare is not intended to keep your children there with force - they are welcome to come to you at any time which might get annoying - we didn't mind. The children's meals were good with 3 different types of veggies at every meal.

We went on a day trip to Luzerne and the owner printed us a map and gave us advice. Only take the Klausen mountain pass if you have nerves of steel!!

When we left my 3 year old left her soft toy dog behind - I e-mailed the hotel and its on its way in the post - no problem.

At about £140 per night for a family of four, champagne breakfast and six course dinner included - I think this hotel offers excellent value for money. The owners and staff strive for excellence in this hotel and it shows.

But if you like to party all night, or let your children run wild then this is not the place for you. Peace and quiet, a good night's sleep, excercise and relaxation is what you will find here. Waterfalls and streams with ice cold pure water to cool you off after a long hike, making fire and having a picnic in the woods, cows and sheep with bells, horse carriage rides and cable cars and lots of fresh air - my asthma disappeared while we were there.

We loved it and are missing it already.

This Hotel is very nice, beautiful location, perfect rooms, great atmosphere, not cheap but…..the management lacks total professionalism, and the worst thing is that they think they are the best! The first thing you notice is that this hotel is 100% focused on Swiss people, and foreigners are not really welcome. Knowing the couple that runs this hotel, you are almost waiting the moment when the 101 Dalmatians are showing up, and Cruella De Vil is getting alive, with Pongo running up the stairs. If you have been there you know what I mean.
You can’t blame the personnel, as they have not received any training at all how to serve dinner, or know which glass is for what. The personnel is dressed in a old fashioned black and white, and the lady of the house dresses up every day in a fashion way like she ran out of a Disney movie. The food is OK, but lacks total creativity. A six-course menu? Yeah right, if you take in account the everyday-the-same-salad and the wrong order to give cheese before your dessert (what a mistake for a top ‘gourmet’ cuisine..), you are left with a soup and a main dish.
Don’t order a cognac in the bar, because they do not know in which glass they have to serve, and you better order before 21:00h, as the bar is abandoned after that time to make sure you go to sleep. The swimming pool is proudly introduced when you arrive as being open for 24 h, but the lights are switched off at 21:00h. Spooky swimming in that case?
If you have kidzz that are any older than 5 years, don’t go to this Hotel. They don’t like too much noise, and this is amazing as is seems to be a ‘family hotel’? Probably Swiss kidzz don’t make noise.
Our stay was a total disappointment (value for money) if you know how much we spent in 3 days! For less money you get a much better hotel in Austria with better service.
So change the personel and the owners, and you would have a great hotel! The surroundings in the mountains are fantastic!

Dear Mister Pongo

Thank you for your review on TripAdvisor. We appreciate that you mentioned „this Hotel is very nice, beautiful location, perfect rooms, great atmosphere“. What a compliment!

It’s a long time ago – since then.

Since your stay in 2009 (about 4 years ago) many things and processes have been chanced. There was a change in the management, the owners and most of the staff. In May 2011 the next generation of the Vogel Family took over the Maerchenhotel.

Therefore we think that some of your critique is not valid anymore. (We believe the review is out of date.)

As you probably have seen, there are many happy guests who have stayed with us and wrote kind reviews on TripAdvisor.

The swimming pool is still open 24 hours a day. If guests are asking at the front desk, the lights get switched on.

Hopefully we see you and your family again here in Braunwald.

Best Regards

Patric Vogel
