We were pleased to find this cafe/restaurant open on a wet Wednesday night. In fact, others must have thought the same as it quickly filled up. For those who don't know, Chiasso is a Swiss border town but the population thinks it is part of Italy...
We were seated quickly and cheerfully, and presented with the food and wine menus.
What we wanted was a substantial protein-based meal as we were over the typically Italian carbohydrate fest of pizza and pasta. I chose a fillet steak with vegetables and a few frites (my weakness), while my wife chose prawns with vegies and boiled potatoes.
To wash it down we splashed out on a local Pinot Grigio which we both thought was delicious, if a trifle expensive for our budget.
Verdict? Very good. My steak was cooked exactly how I like it, and the pepper sauce was creamy and spicy. Vegetables were not over-cooked and the frites were not the thin stringy variety typically obtained from corporate take-away fast food outlets. My wife pronounced her king prawns as very appetising. We finished off the wine and paid the bill, which came to 90 Euros. While this is not a place we could afford every day, we felt that we'd enjoyed a good meal and "got we we came for!"
