“average hotel, clean but old rooms, terrible restaurant”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

There is not much choice in Spiez for a good hotel. We liked the location (next to the castle) and the view on the harbor. The rooms are clean and serve the purpose but we were disappointed by the quality of the food in the restaurant downstairs (dinner and breakfast).

The hotel has a magical, 'picture postcard' look to it and it has spectacular views over the lake with the mountain surroundings (paying the small premium for the lakeside views is a must in my opinion).
This is the second time I have stayed at this hotel (some of my family are now well into double figures for staying here) and it really is lovely. The location is perfect, with the lake on one side and the Schloss (castle) perched on the hill behind it.
If you want to explore Switzerland you can easily travel either by boat or take a short bus ride (free with the Spiez card you are given when checking in) to the train station.
The staff are all very friendly and helpful and there is also free wi-fi throughout the hotel (which makes life a lot easier when you have teenage children).
Although the hotel does not have it's own swimming pool, there is a fantastic pool literally three minutes walk around the marina which the children made use of between excursions.
My children and I will definitely be staying here again.

Room Tip: The lake view.rooms are worth the extra money

It is always a slight worry when you arrive at a hotel to find an ambulance outside the door and the reception area full of rather concerned senior citizens. However everything was soon sorted and we were show to our room which had a great view from the balcony overlooking the lake.
We enjoyed walking beside the lake and visiting the nearby castle.
The room was particularly well soundproofed, and we slept really well, but why do most hotels in Switzerland put 2 singles together to make a double bed ?
The evening meal and breakfast were fine.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Seegarten Hotel Marina for 3 nights - we checked out just this morning, so our memories of our stay at the hotel are fresh.

I wholeheartedly recommend the hotel. It is situated right on Lake Thun and our room (and a number of others) had a view of the marina, houses opposite and the mountain ranges. We stayed in winter and there was little activity on the lake because of the cold. Most boats were covered and looked like they would remain so until spring would bring warmer weather. However, we enjoyed watching the ducks and other birdlife on the water.

The hotel has old world charm, so if you are looking for a modern, brand new hotel this may not be for you. I usually prefer that type of hotel, but I loved being at Seegarten Marina. Our room was spacious, well appointed and spotlessly clean. There was a safe, plenty of storage space and an adjoining 'lounge' area with a two-seater + one-seater lounge chair and coffee table. We had two single beds pushed together. The beds were a bit soft and saggy for my liking, but we still slept well because of our activities during the day.

We dined twice in the hotel restaurant (at night) and meals were good if not outstanding. Breakfast was outstanding. Typically European, it comprised breads, cheeses, spreads, juice and cereals... plus coffee/tea/water. Every item was wonderfully fresh. The breads were fantastic!

The staff were all very friendly and helpful. My very limited German went only so far, but the staff all spoke excellent English and helped make suggestions about where we could go to entertain ourselves. The owner of the hotel is a lovely, friendly man.

The hotel is about a 10min walk downhill from Spiez Station. Without luggage we would happily walk to and from the station, but with luggage it's better to catch a taxi or get a lift. We arrived at night and caught a taxi down. It felt safe to walk around at night, but we weren't sure where to go and because we arrived fairly late at night we just wanted to check in, have a hot shower and get some sleep.

My girlfriend and I loved staying at Seegarten Hotel Marina. It's ideally located, not just because of its proximity to the marina and train station, but for it being a launching pad to exploring the whole of Lake Thun, Jungfraujoch (highest train station in Europe) and the village of Spiez.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the marina.

Hotel by the marina- lovely view of lake with balcony.. Very clean, everything worked and friendly staff. Only irritation was not having free wifi (although there was a free computer to use).

Restaurant in the hotel good, and busy with locals-always a good sign !

Room Tip: Ask to overlook the See

Nice location about 10 walking minutes from the train station, directly on the marina between the castle and the mighty Niesen mountain; excellent breakfast buffet, a good value for a 3 stars hotel in a relaxing swiss town

This hotel is beautifully situated and was, of course, the main reason for our booking rooms here. My husband and I, plus a friend, stayed for two nights in the Seegarten Marina and, although the view from our balcony was wonderful and both rooms were spacious, spotlessly clean and comfortable, it soon became clear that there was room for improvement. Through no fault of the hotel, we arrived in the middle of a heatwave and the rooms were stifling hot due to the lack of air conditioning. The latter, we could have accepted, but some other form of ventilation would have been appreciated. In spite of the heat, there were thick down covers on the beds when just a cotton sheet would have been sufficient. We had a furnished balcony overlooking the lake and this was great except for the fact that, in the heat of the afternoon, it was impossible to sit there due to the sun pouring in from the area not protected by the sun blind. It must be noted here that only rooms at the side of the building would encounter this inconvenience. A parasol would be a big help in summer.

We were somewhat disappointed with the staff. Reception was not particularly welcoming and we were told that our room (No. 102) was quiet. This turned out to be untrue since we were directly above the main restaurant and it was extremely noisy. In the evening we ate in the restaurant and, here again, we were not too impressed. Our waitress poured the wine into our glasses so fiercely thatit splashed on to the tablecloth and then, when she brought our meal, banged the plates down on to the table! We found the food O.K. but nothing more. It was also rather expensive. We were surprised to read that so many reviewers raved about it. The second evening we tried the restaurant again and obviously there were far too many diners in comparison to the number of waiters. Everyone was stressed and had no time to be courteous or even informative. Sadly, it was not the restful evening we had anticipated.

There was a problem concerning the new door-locking system of our friend's room but this was eventually solved satisfactorily.

I think we would return to the Seegarten Marina but definitely not in the high season, and we would request a room further away from the restaurant. It would be interesting to see if this very promising hotel could rise to our expectations either before our after the summer season. Maybe we just had a poor experience.

I have given this property three-stars only, mainly on account of the staff.

we just had a poor experience.

Room Tip: Request a lake-facing room but on an upper floor and away from the main restaurant.
