A real suprise to find ourselves eating at El Vaixell not just once but three nights out of a 6 night stay. Having visited Pals for over 20 years, we have eaten at numerous restaurants in pals and surrounding villages and coves but had always avoided what used to be a run down self service restaurant. it has been transformed into a light, open, airy and pretty garden with lanterns hanging from the trees at night.

As it was the first night we decided to stay local and instead of head to the beach or tennis club (never niff niffs as don't rate it despite it always being busy), we decided to try El Vaixell. We ended up going back another 2 times as the food, service and ambiance was excellent.

Our favourites were the cuttlefish in a stunning garlic sauce to start but also the grilled vegetables were superb. A lovely looking dish of simple grilled peppers, aubergine, asparagus and potato presented on a piece of slate with a flavour that didn't disappoint. The sardines were also stunning, as was the daily fish special of griled Seabass. We tried the pizza one night which was ok, thin, crispy but not the best ever. The hamburger was excellent however, not your traditional burger in a bun but again presented on slate with a delicious roasted tomato on the side. The patatasbravas we ordered as a side were simply spot on with a lovely spicy kick to the sauce. Hard to choose whether the perfectly cooked duck (fat crispy but still pink, tender meat) or the sardines were my favourite main course but as we had the cuttlefish starter 3 times which says it all.

The wine menu is limited but that could be because their " Flower and the bee" white wine is so good they don't need many others. I would suggest for some people the lack of choice may be more of an issue.

The owner/front of house was welcoming and keen to ensure we were well looked after and knew the menu inside and out making good recommendations (in multiple languages). The first night on the Saturday had clearly taken them by suprise as they were struggling to keep up with the attentive service due to the number of people trying to get a table. Not an issue for us as we're happy and used to a leisurely meal but for those waiting for drinks on a warm evening there were a few desperate glances to try and catch a waiters eye.

This didn't put us off and the next 2 visits we had superb service. If anything, the starters came out a touch too quickly as I hadn't quite finished mt g&t and the nice touch of some complimentary crisps.

We found the prices to be very reasonable for the food. 7 euros for sardines, 8 euros for pizza and burger, 9 euros for the duck and then around 15 euros for the daily fish special. The wine was 11 to 14 euros but not sure about the prices for cocktails etc which seemed to be a hit for per dinner drinks in the lovely raised garden area. This space is ideal for kids but also big groups of people whilst at the same time, dining as a couple was perfect the way they have laid out the restaurant.

Overall I would thoroughly recommend the restaurant and can't wait to go back next year. I just hope they get busier as they deserve to be.

We ended up at the Vaixell on recommendation from some friends....and ended up going 3 times!
Having had a terrible summer weather wise in Dublin, the lure of eating "outside" was considerable!

On 2 occasions we eat with another couple and on no occasion, did anyone feel that their choice was anything but good. Whether it was the calamari to start (home made batter was incredibly light) or the lobster paella, turbot or sole - or even the brownie and strawberry ice cream to complete - wish we were going back tonight!!

Some (to many) restaurants over charge for wine. Again, there was fantastic value.

Service - very friendly and efficient - .

A note: As the restaurant is in the garden, it can be windy on occasions, so do bring a pullover/ jacket as a precaution. On one evening the owner lent my wife a shawl for her to return the following day....

our fifth visit to Playa de Pals this August, and we immediately noticed that the sad looking "self-service" restaurant under the trees at the roundabout had been done up. we went first for an after dinner Mojito, and all the diners looked happy, so we ate there twice. I think eating earlier has the best service. The razor clams were amazing. the food is as good as much more expensive places. and the owner is so nice, and the staff so friendly, and the mojitos so good in the "chill-out" bar area, it's hard just to have the one.
