“Great views”
Reviewed July 28, 2014

I really loved my time here and at the beach. Nice clean, very simple, modern rooms although you don't get too much light in the spa rooms. The kids club is great, there are really nice people. The views are spectacular! The fake closet doors that open to the bathroom are unique. Although there is a closet we kept our suitcases on the floor. The people also speak all different languages. The automatic sink, and the motion sensor lights in the hallways are great ideas to help the environment. But no tissues really through me off, I stayed there when I had a bad cold. Overall it doesn't really matter about the rooms, because the beach is what you should spend your most time at. There are boats with slides, kayaks, paddle boards and all sorts of things. But you need to pay for the beach chairs and umbrellas, so our friends sat on the sand. It was really a nice stay, the people were nice, the views were great and the hotel was great for the environment too. But you may want to bring your own beach towels, as the hotel does not provide them.

We stayed in the oldest part of the complex which was relatively primitive, especially for the price charged.
The bathroom facilities were very old-fashioned and unsafe for the elderly and infirm - no support rails and no anti-slip mat in the bath/shower.
Breakfast was, however, excellent.
Dinner in the main dining room was over-priced for the menu provided which contained too few dishes for carnivores (just pigeon, albeit delicious). My wife did not enjoy her fish which was advertised as the most important dish.
Saturday evening dinner in the breakfast restaurant was disappointing in content and quality.
The staff were very pleasant, courteous and attempted to be helpful but in the latter respect were ineffectual - they did not know what was going on locally, and could not provide advice about local services.
Worst of all was the complete lack of safety for the elderly and infirm (in addition to my concerns about bathrooms). I witnessed two falls on staircases due to lack of rails and poor design. It is fortunate that the hotel was not sued for personal injury.

Room Tip: Not in the original building.

Green Features: All very well BUT it needs to provide modern facilities as well.

I just spent 2 weeks in the hotel ("Spa triple room", family of 4 with 4 yr old and newborn).

Positive side: Nice rooms, good looking hotel, great location with access to fun beaches nearby

Negative side: No good for prolonged stay.
-A few people from the staff are very friendly, but globally you feel that the staff hate each other. Globally, just a bad vibration that makes you feel unwelcome.
-Staff in the restaurant is particularly bad, probably because they're understaffed, one of the managers in the evenings is particularly unfriendly - short fellow with dark hair who has a fake smile and a nasty attitude.
-Very monotonous breakfast, same thing every day. For the price, you expect something better (nice breakfast staff although they're clearly understaffed)
-The supposed "Spa" of this "Hostal Spa" didn't work (indoor pool was broken, bad service). Ended up going in town nearby to get treatment.
-Cleanliness of the rooms varies, some day OK, some days not
-No attention to the small things: I needed an iron for a shirt, they said "no iron", offered to do it themselves, and charged me 17 euros for the 2 minute service. What a joke!
-No wifi in my room, which I needed for work. Wifi in main lobby is terrible.
-No outdoor pool! (big downside)

Summary:
Globally, the place has a great facade but you don't feel welcome by staff that hate each other.
One young girl at main desk deserves praise though.
A few basic services that you expect these days are missing.
No attention to detail.
Lacks a much needed pool for this price.

I'd definitely return to L'Escala, charming beach town in Costa Brava, but the Hostal Empuries has a lot of downsides. Might be OK for a very short stay.

The Hotel is very good overall. However it's a shame that there is no swimming pool. On the other hand it's hard to understand why there is no kids menu in any of the 4 restaurants, moreover considering that the hotel has a kids club (great and useful idea, by the way!!!). In summary, you get what you pay for but at this price range I personally expect a few more attention to detail and a higher level service than what you get.

Dear Jnamaral,

thank you very much for sharing your opinion with all the travellers at Trip Advisor about your recent stay at la Costa Brava.

Regarding your comment about the pool, it surprises me that you were expecting it since this information is not provided in our web site or in any other Third Party website. The hotel offers a unique environment and has the sea just in front of the building, 10 meters, and also a spa with two pools for adults use only.

We take in serious consideration your comment about the kids menu. This offer is always available upon request and it changes continuously. Also kids has the regular offer of the restaurant that most of them use to really enjoy, however taking into consideration your comment we are currently printing kids menu.

We hope to welcome you again in a near future.

The setting of the hotel is perfect, with the beautiful beach directly across the street and a marvellous view over the bay. We didn't have much view from our room, but it didn't matter at all. We didn't feel welcoming upon arrival, but the next day when I went to the front desk for some information, the receptionists were very kind and helpful. Had dinner at the hotel once, the food was delicious and exquisitely presented, especially the lukewarm squid entrée, I still remember now how it tastes! Our kids shared one whole fish, grilled. The waitress brought it to the table to show and took it away to fillet it but it took so long, one fillet after the other, when my son got his plate in the end, the fist was already cold. The breakfast buffet was fantastic, a great variety of food and drinks. And the service staff at breakfast were very attentive and hardworking. Two little disappointments : 1. the wifi was extremely slow. My husband had to check his business daily but he couldn't download any information. The reception area is slightly better but you can't call it fast. Talked to the FOM about this issue, he said they're aware of this but there's nothing they could do. 2. the room was not properly cleaned, I saw spider webs almost in every corner. Dust filled the top of the soap dispenser. I know it must be difficult to keep it clean because of all the insects, the humidity and the sand that the guests bringing in each day but I'm sure the cleaning issue can be improved. I would strongly suggest the hotel to install some kind of rack right out of the room, on the little balcony/terrace for hotel guests to hang wet towels or wet bathing suits. All in all, we had a wonderful nine days at the hotel.

Room Tip: We had Quadruple Room with garden view, it was perfect for our family of four. The setting of the ro...

Dear Grace M,

thank you very much for sharing your opinion with all the travellers at Trip Advisor.

We are very happy you have enjoy your gastronomy lead by Rafa Peña chef, one of the chef with more potential in Catalonia.

We apologise for the wifi service. We are in a very special spot without any building and streets around and this makes that the internet service is not as it could be in a down town of a city. We are pushing to the internet supplier to improve the infraestructure. The answer is that in the coming month optical fibre will be installed in the surroundings of the hotel.

Regarding room cleanliness I will send this valuose comment to the Houskeeping department to make sure that this deviation don't happens any more.

Again, thank you very much for your comments.

We hope to welcome you very soon.

Perfect beach holiday and sea views. So relaxed there are ramps to bring bicycles inside this classic hotel amidst fascinating ruins and archealogical history. Service was relaxed and helpful, ice bucket and picnic on terrace no problem, and proximity by bicycle to town a breeze. Direct access to lovely swimming beach.

Room Tip: Sea view terrace

We went here for a wedding and was not sure what to expect. It's not the grande hotel if that's what you want, but what it is small and sweet and minimal. We had a Spa Room and it was perfectly clean and neat and great bathroom. It overlooked the gardens and ocean.

The bathroom was nice with shower and nice size tub. The closets ample and really if your in Costa Brava you are out at beach and relaxing. The bed was a king and even had a little desk.

It was relaxing and the beach nice. You have to pay for chairs. And bring your own towel. They have an area where you can rent paddle boards and if your into kite surfing some great areas around. The hotel had aspects of old and new which I found charming. But I think I liked the spa rooms better. Newer and fresher.

There is a little beach/sand bar on premies that was nice for quick bite and to sit with friends and have beers. It's right on the boardwalk that you can take to ruins or town. There is a restaurant but stricter on hours.

The staff was nice and friendly.
Definitely an easy place to stay. Only hour and half from Barcelona if need an get away from city.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Legacy Hostal Empuries stands on an ancient settlement, beside the Greek and Roman ruins of Empuries, whose beauty and tranquility attracted the Iberians as much as the Greek seafarers and the first Romans who settled the Iberian Peninsula. Moreover this is the place from which the mythic country of Emporda took its name. This privileged location is the actual cradle of our culture and the only Greek and Roman archaeological site in the whole peninsula. Consequently, to protect and enrich this legacy is one of the main objectives of the Hostal. The History The original construction of Hostal Empuries appeared in 1907, under the name of Villa Teresita, with the idea of giving lodgings to the first archaeologists, who directed by Puig i Cadafalch, set out on the job of excavating and restoring the Greek and Roman remains. From these historic beginnings the Hostal changed at the start of the 20C and became the precursor to touristic lodgings in the area, even before the use of the term Costa Brava. Years ago there was a change of management in the Hostal which undertook to finish extensive reforms with the idea that activities should flourish throughout the entire year and that the badly run-down site would be restored. With the same pioneering spirit of the ancients and the ability to responsibly and sensitively modify this magical spot, alongside the exacting requirements of the modern tourist, the Hostal is really striving to transform itself into a new reference point, a new model of tourism under the name of Sustainable Tourism, founded on social and ecological responsibility. The spirit The new Hostal Empuries is a project based on the idea of improving the world in which we live and share so that future generations might also enjoy themselves. We would like to become the best Hostal for our world... for a world where we all belong and for the Earth that surrounds us. Accordingly, we take our responsibility for managing this site very seriously and we endevour to serve all those who come to enjoy this encounter with nature and history of which we proudly form a part. ... more   less
