“Yet another visit”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

This was our eighth visit to this perfect location. We prefer to stay in the cheapest rooms with a sea view. These are as close to the beach as you can get and we slept to the sound of the surf.

Breakfast is very good - plenty of fruit, breads, cakes, meats and tomatoes to make your Catalan tomato bread.

We ate in the restaurant on our first night. We ate the menu and the food was excellent. Unfortunately, everyone arrived at once and the staff were not able to give everyone their attention, but two lots of 'amuse bouche' arrived with the apero and we were happy. Although not on the menu, we asked for a cheese for our dessert. A choice of good cheeses was provided.

A new outdoor seating area has been installed since our last visit and this was right outside our room. The downside of this is that some guests sat out until 1am talking loudly.

This was our first visit this year. We had tried to book for February, but the hotel was closed for the winter (2012-13). We enquired about plans for closure this coming winter - "never again will we close" was the reply, so we'll be back soon.

This is a delightful hotel in minimalist Catalan style right on the foreshore and close to the fabulous Greek and Roman ruins of Empuries. We did not use the restaurant or bars on this occasion but found the reception and other staff to be welcoming and helpful. Our room in the older part of the building, overlooking the charming bay, was ideal for our needs and, like many others, had recently been modernised in typically minimalist Spanish style. It took us some time to get used to the sliding (and very revealing) glass panels in the loo, bathroom and very efficient shower - but that somehow added to the funky fun. Pity that there are not more UK/European tv channels and that some of the public areas are a little 'barn-like' - but, overall, this is a lovely place for a short stay particularly if you are into beach lounging or archaeology and history.

Room Tip: It's probably worth the extra cost of a sea-facing room.

We stayed in a standard room with a sea view in the old part of the hotel and this proved to be a really good choice. The room itself was on the small side and nothing special in terms of design, but the view out over the bay is what makes it. The hotel has a lovely design and has a nice feel to it.

The only thing that let this hotel down for us was the a la carte restaurant. They were very off hand when we tried unsuccessfully to book a meal and a little bit up themselves. Don't expect any special treatment as a hotel guest.

DO NOT BOTHER WITH THE BUFFET OPTION IN THE BRASSERIE!!!! This is no better than a motorway services. There is a little village about 10 minutes walk away along the coast and and the eating options there are much better.

Breakfasts in the hotel were good and service at reception was very good. All in all this one of those places that will sell itself because of where it is.

Room Tip: Choose a standard room with a sea view, as these have a close up view of the beach. The Spa rooms do...

Dear Mr. marka 063,

Thank you very much for staying at Hostal Empuries during your recent visit to la Costa Brava.

I also would like to thank you for your comments regarding the rooms. I want to inform you that last december we remodel six of the standard rooms and that next december we will remodel all the rest standard rooms, 10 more. That means that all the standard rooms will be bigger and all of them will have telephone, tv and mini bar.

I do appreciate also your feed back regarding our restaurants. Villa Teresita is becoming a reference for local gastronomy and we are happy to realize how reservations are increasing everyday and that is why in the room confirmation email we send to our guests we always suggest to book in advance at our restaurants.

Finally, I will share with the our Chef and the Food and Beverage team your comments regarding Bistro de Mar and , of course we will take them into consideration for the future.

We very much enjoyed taking care of you and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

This is not a 5* hotel, but nor is it trying to be. This is a hotel with 5* qualities, such as the excellent spa and the modern spa rooms which i would recommend above the main house rooms, and more earthy, organic attributes like the relaxed windswept terrace at the front of the splendid fin de siècle main building serving seafood based tapas such as fried whitebait and grilled anchovies. There is no room service and i found the dinner menu a little limited, although they are clearly trying to tap into the Catalan food revolution and to make the dining experience there more haute cuisine. They need to carry on working on that a little bit. The location is wonderful, the building is nestled in a picturesque cove and you can walk over to the amazing greco-roman ruins 20 minutes away. I would recommend this hotel. It is a little different, but a very relaxing place to get away from it all.

Room Tip: get one of the spa rooms, and ask for one with a full sea view.

Admittedly August is not a good month to travel in Spain if you don't really want crowded restaurants and screaming kids. However this hotel didn't quite live up to its online hype. The position is ok, but the place was quite tired. The room was nice but could do with a paint. Overall, not really worth the inflated prices. It's saving grave was the gastronomic restaurant. Great service and even better food.

I read some of the bad reviews with concern as we were due to stay here for 5 days. I needn't have worried as this place is lovely and different with a bit of class. We are staying in one of the spa garden rooms but as at the end of the row we get a free sea view as well. The room is clean and modern, and has a good layout for 2 adults and 2 teenage children who have a partitioned area at the front. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and it was good food but a bit pricey when compared to the excellent options which are a short walk away. The beach is a bit busy but there is always space and I would recommend bringing snorkel as there is some sea life to watch.

I feel as if I've stayed somewhere different (and am checking as I write) as the Hostal Spa Empuries WE stayed in was incredibly luxurious, run with seamless efficiency, and completely charming the whole five days we were there. Their zealous mantra of sustainablilty means that you need to be educated in the workings of the rooms; very high tech bathrooms meant it took a while to work out how the bath worked for instance, but this is in pursuit of honouring a site which has been continuously inhabited for 3,000 years, The hotel was originally built to house the archaeologists excavating the Greco-Roman site inside which the hotel sits. The present owners should be congratulated on setting the bar so high this particular bit of teh Costa Brava will be preserved from the mass tourism that is seen everywhere else. Sitting on the terrace overlooking the sea while a film shot in the hotel was screened onto a huge sheet set up on the beach below was a highlight. Its not cheap but it is nice to know that they are helping to build a school in Burkina Faso with their profits.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Legacy Hostal Empuries stands on an ancient settlement, beside the Greek and Roman ruins of Empuries, whose beauty and tranquility attracted the Iberians as much as the Greek seafarers and the first Romans who settled the Iberian Peninsula. Moreover this is the place from which the mythic country of Emporda took its name. This privileged location is the actual cradle of our culture and the only Greek and Roman archaeological site in the whole peninsula. Consequently, to protect and enrich this legacy is one of the main objectives of the Hostal. The History The original construction of Hostal Empuries appeared in 1907, under the name of Villa Teresita, with the idea of giving lodgings to the first archaeologists, who directed by Puig i Cadafalch, set out on the job of excavating and restoring the Greek and Roman remains. From these historic beginnings the Hostal changed at the start of the 20C and became the precursor to touristic lodgings in the area, even before the use of the term Costa Brava. Years ago there was a change of management in the Hostal which undertook to finish extensive reforms with the idea that activities should flourish throughout the entire year and that the badly run-down site would be restored. With the same pioneering spirit of the ancients and the ability to responsibly and sensitively modify this magical spot, alongside the exacting requirements of the modern tourist, the Hostal is really striving to transform itself into a new reference point, a new model of tourism under the name of Sustainable Tourism, founded on social and ecological responsibility. The spirit The new Hostal Empuries is a project based on the idea of improving the world in which we live and share so that future generations might also enjoy themselves. We would like to become the best Hostal for our world... for a world where we all belong and for the Earth that surrounds us. Accordingly, we take our responsibility for managing this site very seriously and we endevour to serve all those who come to enjoy this encounter with nature and history of which we proudly form a part. ... more   less
