“Just disappointing”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

Mas Concas has some very positive reviews on TA so we decided to give it a try. A weekday at lunchtime in high season. We were seated in "the granary": roomy, nice and cool, albeit somewhat noisy. Could do with some sound deadening material.
There is no á la carte service, the choice is limited to the Menu Diario at abt. 13,- including wine and the Menu Chef at 15,50 excluding. We tried both. Starters were one salad with salmon (ok); two others took tapas: four small individual dishes, not bad, not memorable. The fourth person in our group had a terrine of pheasant and foie: dry like old leather and totally tasteless. Main courses were fried dorada (acceptable) and beef filet, overcooked, dry and bland. Drinks: a pleasant verdejo and an average rioja. Service was slow and disinterested. The positive touches: good glasses, white stoneware, black slate, linen napkins, and the food itself well presented. Food quality however was just disappointing. I suppose that their system of very limited choice enables the kitchen to precook nearly everything with the microwave for finishing touch.

“First choice for quality food”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

This is definately the best place to eat in L'Escala (Cinc Claus). Best deal quality/price. Friendly, very nice environment, exquisite kitchen. We would surely pay double for this standard in Belgium.

The food quality was outstanding.
Mas Concas represented excellent value.
It is an advantage to know some Spanish or French.

“If this were in London, you would pay at least double”
Reviewed June 3, 2013

The area around Girona must have more good restaurants than almost anywhere in Europe.

Surprising as it is not a famous city; less surprising, as it is the home of the former El Bulli, rated as the best in the world.

This restaurant has a French chef, charming service, a pleasant rustic setting and a link with Catalan poet Victor Catala - who was, despite the name. a woman.

We went there once and were so impressed that we returned three nights later just to see if it was as good as we thought. With the solitary sin of overcooked razor clams in the paella., the answer was yes.

We paid about 50 euros the first night for two including a half bottle of Vina Sol; about 65 the second night. If it had been one of the establishments adoned with the name of a "celebrity" chef in London it would have cost at least double, maybe triple - and been no better.

Altogether a pleasure

“Still as good as ever!”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

We discovered this restaurant last Spring and had 3 lunchtime meals, all excellent. We have just eaten here again and the standard is as good as ever. At 14 euros for 3 courses, including wine, water and bread, it cannot be beaten. I had rabbit in aspic for entree, lamb with potatoes for main and apricot clafoutis for pudding, with a lovely red wine. You do need to book and allow for the fact that the staff don't speak much English. I understand that it is much more expensive in the evenings. So good, we have already booked to go again next week.
