“What a pleasant surprise!”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

Booked a week here 9th-16th august, and was wondering what to expect considering the reviews. Arrived and had a bit of a wait for our room, but the pool area was lovely and available to use. Very good system with the sun beds, and pool very clean!! We stayed in a 1 bed apartment on the beach side of the property with a lovely sea view ((room 210) Block 5) the apartment itself was very spacious and the facilities were just what you needed. The air conditioning was fantastic, but does however pump hot air on to the balcony, so choose one or the other! The balcony was also very spacious with a clothes drier, 4 chairs, and a table. You receive fresh towels after 4 days, but you can pop to reception to get fresh ones should you need them. The beds are very comfortable, so unless there is 6 of you, I suggest you get a 1 bed apart, as apposed to the 2 beds on the other side of the road. We didn't go much of the Mucky Duck food, and much preferred the Rugby Tavern, which offers English and Spanish food. Salou is easily accessible on the bus which stops just up the road in either direction. The beach just in front of the apartments is cleaned every night so you wake to a pristine smooth sand beach which is much more exclusive than the busier beaches in Salou or Cambrils. This is the perfect holiday for families and couples alike that are looking for a good base to explore the Costa Dorada. The TUI rep Robbie was such a nice chap and very helpful.

Room Tip: Ask the hotel in advance that you would like a high floor room, they give you much better reviews, e...

We were a family of 3 staying from 19th to 30th July. We were amazed when arriving at 10.30am to find our apartment all ready for us. We didn't have a full sea view but were very happy with the side view of the sea we did have. The balcony wasn't huge but large enough for our needs. The apartment was very clean although a little basic and could do with a bit of updating but as we were basically using it to sleep in it was fine.

Pool area was great. The fact that there was no dash for sunbeds at silly o'clock every morning was welcomed. And the cost of 1 Euro per bed per day is pretty reasonable, particularly as there was no restriction on purchasing drink and food from the supermarket next to the apartments and consuming it at the pool.

The immediate vicinity lacks choice of restuarants. The British/Irish pubs nearby offer pretty basic fare although friendly and efficient service at reasonable prices. Our favourite was the seafood restaurant a short walk in Salou direction on the landward side of the road. But eating here every night would end up expensive.

There are plenty of excursions/days out on offer for those who do wish to explore rather than sit around the pool or on the beach every day. Check out the downhill bike ride (great for all the family) cycling downhill for 22 km through spectacular countryside, the House of Illusion in Salou (a fantastic night out - a must see), Tarragona (only just over a couple of euros return on Plana bus) to see Roman amphitheatre, circus and underground passageways, Montserrat monastery (again on Plana bus - much cheaper than Thomson) and Barcelona (via train from Salou).

All in all a great holiday.

We stayed here for two weeks from 23rd July to 6th Aug 2013. Having previously stayed just up the road in the Best Cambrils we decided to try these apartments as they were cheaper and we knew the area well. We booked two one-bedroom apartments with two adults and one child in each.

We were dropped off and just left by our transfer bus. None of us knew where to go so we dragged our suitcases round to the front only to find the reception is at the back of the complex. Head into the gate next to the supermarket bakery.

We arrived at 10.45am. My daughters room was ready, ours wasn't and we were told to come back at 11.30. We all went over the road to my daughters apartment (Block 6, room 218) to have a look. We opened the door to a dustpan full of dust in the hallway. Upon walking into the living room there was a pile of rubble in the middle of the floor and the balcony floor was covered in dust and dirt. The ceiling light had a wire hanging from the side wall to the light (though it seems this was the same in all rooms). We went back to reception to complain and were told they had fitted a new air-con unit and they would send cleaners over or my daughter could have another room. We looked at this alternative room. A bit cleaner but no sea view and looking down over the pub and road below so she opted to keep the 1st room.

Our room very similar. Beautiful beach view (Block 5, room 204) and basic but enough in the way of kitchen facilities. I would definitely advise you to ask immediately if your room has a sea view as not all do. Ask to change it before you go over the road. I would have hated to be overlooking the road which was very noisy. *I have included room and view pictures* We saw an amazing storm from our balcony with lightning cracking across the sea - awesome!

In two weeks our towels were changed twice. They came to change the bedding once but as two of us were still in bed they wouldn't leave it. Our apartment was not cleaned AT ALL. (Apart from by me.)

We enjoyed the pool and the lifeguard was lovely, I don't understand the negative comments about him. He was great with the kids. If a child cried he would check they were ok and he was very helpful with the sunbeds, taking them to where people wanted them. The downside is no inflatables or T-Shirts in the pool but those were the rules he had to follow. He picked up any rubbish and helped people where he could. The poolside is VERY slippy, we saw a few slips and falls so take extra care. Sunbeds were one euro each and were available from 11am which I thought was great. No mad rush in the mornings. It did make me laugh that some people put towels down on the tiles to reserve their spot, even before they had beds! :) There are NO umbrellas at the pool so get there early if you want a shady spot. There is also a 0.9m pool to the side of Block 5 which not many people know about, we only knew as it was next to our room.

The poolside bar - A can of coke was 2 euros. A can of coke in the shop (about 50 yards further away) was 71 cents. We had 6 in our family drinking at least 3 drinks a day each for two weeks. It is well worth walking one minute further away to get them. Bar prices vary alot too. It's worth comparing if you are on a budget. For example, a coke in Molly Malones was 1.50 but in the Rugby Tavern it was 1.90. I was charged 6.00 for a vodka in one bar and 2.75 in another! (It's less that 5 Euros in the supermarket for a bottle but press the buzzer at the top of the glass doors for it, or you will have a very sniffy assistant giving you the evil eye for not knowing).

I ordered food in the poolside bar. There were 12 customers in total. After 40 mins we still had no food so I went in to complain. The barman pointed to our food sitting there on the end of the bar and said 'I didn't know it was for you'?? We had been sat there all that time and he never thought to ask? Really? It was stone cold by then so I refused it and they cooked us some more. One day I also asked for a cheese salad sandwich (i'm vegetarian) and it arrived full of ham. Beware the vinegar bottles too, after putting some on our chips we noticed two small flies floating around in the bottom of the bottle!

We found Molly Malones had the nicest food, we mostly ate there but they had no wi-fi. We also ate in the Rugby Tavern a few times, the food was ok but not as nice. They had free wi-fi too but it was very intermittent. Connect to the Mucky Duck wi-fi instead (password muckyd1963) it was stronger and you could still connect to it in the Rugby Tavern next door :)

One thing missing in this area is entertainment. We went over to the pool bar on Saturday evening. There were some guys and girls dancing and twirling fire sticks then an old gent came on singing songs even I struggled to know (i'm 42) so obviously the kids didn't want to stay. None of the local bars had anything on either. We had to ask for the music to be turned up just to add some atmosphere.

We visited Salou and Cambrils on the bus. It costs about 4.75 for three of us and they don't do return tickets. Salou is as you'd expect, very busy, lots of tacky shops. Lovely fountain on the front for kids to run around in, take extra clothes for them. Cambrils was much prettier and the shops and restaurants more high class if that's what you prefer. There were also artists along the boulevard and some fantastic sandcastles on the beach.

I totally recommend Port Aventura theme park. We did a full day and a separate evening there. If you find a bar selling regular coke in bottles (such as Caffe Di Marre on Salou front) you can collect six labels and one adult gets in for free saving you over 40 Euros. In Port Aventura we bought two fast pass wristbands but if you put them on loosly you can take them off and take it in turns to use them. We got on most rides with just a minutes wait and walked straight on to Shambhala. If you like rollercoasters do not miss this one, it is amazing!! I absolutely loved it there in the evening. Much cooler and really pretty all lit up. You can enter at 7pm but beware some of the rides shut early. My daughter went down to ride Furios Baco at 10.30pm and it was shut and when she tried to walk back up to join us at the top end of the park, they had blocked the way and wouldn't let people up even though the rides were still going up there!? Great show on the lake at then end of the night too.

And to my last gripe. The lifts. Very small, supposedly '4 person' lifts. You can barely fit your luggage into. We had to send someone upstairs to pull a case out while another was downstairs putting one in. And they get STUCK. Yes, stuck with ME in it. The alarm just rings inside the lift so you have to wait for someone to come along and they shout for them to help you. I was thankfully helped by a Spanish Gent who trekked across the road to reception to find a maintenance man for me. Overall I was stuck for 25 mins but the lift is so small and clammy it seemed like longer. Enter at your peril!!

Despite my few gripes we did enjoy it here. Take earplugs as it can be noisy, especially if you're near the road though. I would go back as long as I had the sea view again. I totally recommend a midnight walk on the beach too. We did this on our last night and it was fabulous :)

Room Tip: If you have a one bed apt (Block 5 & 6), ask for sea view before you cross the road. If you are...

A group of 17 of us stayed here for 10days from July 24-Aug 3rd.As other reviews has stated the noise from the trains can be a problem we didn't mind at all and we were in Block 2 room 107 which couldn't be any nearer to the rail lines. There are different types of trains and some are very noisey and take longer to go past but you get used to them and we are gone from room by 11 a.m. and most of the trains stop by midnight, i am a very light sleeper and i was never woken with the noise. Some of my relations were across the rd by the beach in the one bed apartments and had lovely views but they did experiance some noise from the streets and other apartments.
Also a lot of reviews complained about the lifegaurd, i thought he was very nice and has to keep rules in the pool so every one can enjoy it and best of all no early rising as sunbeds are not distributed until 11 each morning. Great location, great supermarket and bakery right on your doorstep, beach and restaurants across the rd.We found the rubgy Tavern the best for dinners and molly malones great for the Irish Breakfast !!! Pure Genuis was another lovely bar that we only found on our 2nd last night, owner very good with the kids organises pool games and wiii games. To sum up the Pins Platja you get what you pay for, its very resonable, plenty of space around the pool and a beautiful beach across the rd.
