“No way is this a 4***** hotel”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2013

This hotel has a lot going for it if the severe problems it has, can be sorted.

First the good points.

Restaurant staff are very attentive, friendly and aware of the needs of the restaurant users, the food is excellent, I have eaten food of a similar standard in 5 ***** hotels, there is even an area outside if you wish to eat alfresco (if the smokers are not there).

The location relative to the beach is also one of the plus points, out of the rear of the hotel past the pool area, across a cycle path you are on the beach.

The lifeguard in the pool area was very attentive and has a professional altitude to his position.
The sunbeds around the pool area are of a high standard.

The beds are good quality.

The lifts seem to function well.

Now for the bad points.

This hotel has had a recent refurbishment which included the addition of another floor to the building, the new decoration seems to be very grey - grey is everywhere, the reception area needs some colour added to make it more inviting.

The rooms are also grey and are not what I would expect in a 4 **** hotel, they are on the small size (there are larger rooms at an extra cost). The hotel web page say’s an extra bed or cot could be put into the room (the extra bed is already under one of the beds in the room), it would be impossible to move around the room if they were added. For 2 adults the rooms are functional and of a 3*** standard. The bathroom (also grey) only has a shower (no bath) and is smart and also functional.

Some of the sea-view rooms have trees in front of the windows, limiting the view!!! and can be dark.

The room cleaning was very much hit and miss, some days the rooms were cleaned to an acceptable standard, other days there would be no towels left or the rooms would be rooms cleaned but the beds were not made! The hallways always looked dirty (probably the grey carpets and walls). Three times we were in our rooms when the cleaner arrived; all three times she took our key card from its slot (needed to activate the electricity in the room) when she finished. There was a big smug of sun-cream on the mirror in the lift for 3 days!!!

The air-conditioning was always on, if you manually switched it off and opened and closed the patio door it would come back on, when you returned to the room and reactivated the electricity with your key card it always came on!!!

Some of the bar staff had a problem giving the correct change. The bar and entertainment area are not very comfortable, some of the bench seating falls over if someone sits forward on the edge of it, some of the chairs are made of hard plastic and are very uncomfortable, there are problems with the acoustics within this area and the entertainment sounded like it was being played in a railway station, we went to another hotel during the evenings as it was so bad, though on entertainment nights the room was full of people who were not guests at the hotel, they arrived early, took the best seats and did not buy any drinks!!!

There is plenty of seating around the pool area, but they are also hard plastic and not very comfortable, there are 2 pools (child and adult) the adult pool is quite small for the size of the hotel and is what you would expect in a small hotel or apartment complex. There is also a bar in the pool area, which also has the problems with the staff giving the wrong change.

The hotel is not in Cambrils as advertised, it’s in Vilafortuny, There is not much around the hotel 2 bars, another hotel, 3 little shops, a pharmacy (that if your fed-up with the grey) and a ceramic store. If you want more, you need to go into Cambrils (a pleasant 2k walk or bus outside hotel) or Salou (4k walk or bus outside hotel)

We won’t be rushing to rebook this hotel.

Very nice people in reception. Mr. David is a lot of help and when you're coming at late hours Mr. James is a great help. Restaurant is O.K. Pool side very nice.and with the sea nearby, just crossing the bicicle lane. For me its the number one. Hoping to go more times this year.

Stayed here on the very last week of its season this October, I cannot praise the staff more for all the help and friendliness they shown during our stay , from the bar staff who were always smiling to the reception and dining staff who although did not speak English very well gave there utmost to make it a relaxing and stress free holiday. Nothing was too much trouble for everyone even when the day came of the hotel closing after check outs we were told we could still use all facilities and keep our baggage there until we would have to leave for our flight home at 7pm. As we were full board we were invited to join the staff for there end of season staff party which was an amazing experience and goes to show even more how friendly and accommodating the hotel staff are. we will definetely be back and would like to thank everyone who made our trip brilliant! top marks

Room Tip: We did have trouble with not getting what we had paid for but for a reasonable price a room switch w...

This Hotel is perfectly situated between cambrils and salou with a lovely promenade walk either way. The hotel rooms have been renovated very well and the reception area and bar will be renovated over the winter. We found the staff to be particularly helpful and attentive, being forgetful I lost cardies and video equipment several times and each time it was returned with a smile. The food whilst not a very extensive menu was well cooked and beautifully presented although sometimes not as hot as one would like we never went hungry. Prices in the bar were very reasonable particularly as compared with our visit to Barcelona. Not a lot of entertainment but it was adequate for over 50's but would not recommend it to a younger element. In all would we go there again - yes.

Room Tip: rooms from 1005-12 are on the sunny side and the higher level is better

We booked this hotel just 5 days before we went. It is in a lovely position right on the promenade which stretches from Salou to Cambrils lovely to walk on. Hired bikes from Hotel and rode right along the bike path no need to go on any roads. Hotel is exceptionally clean and rooms are very well presented. We had a side sea view and had the sun from 10am to 7pm when it set. We went in October and had lovely weather. Staff are very helpful and pleasant. The only thing was the food was not as hot as it could have been at meal times. Although there was plenty of choice and it never seemed to run out. Drink prices were quite reasonable in hotel 2.50Euros a pint of beer. Snack bar was very good at lunch times serving pizzas chips burgers etc. Buses ran to Salou and Cambrils right outside the hotel very frequently and it was not too expensive 1.55Euros each. We had a very good time here.

Myself and my family have just returned from a weeks stay in the Centurion Playa and while it has a few very good points, I honestly can't give this hotel any more than 3 stars.

The location is excellent as it is right on the beach with just a small path to cross to reach the beach. The beach was pretty quiet when we visited so plenty of room and there is also a small beach bar right outside where you can have a drink and some basic, but tasty food. The beach itself is very clean.

The hotel itself looks tired and dated from the outside but thankfully the inside fares better. The main reception area is small but clean with the bar to the left and dining area to the right. Straight ahead there are 1 or 2 arcade machines for the kids but these are woefully inadequate at keeping anyone entertained for any period of time. The rooms have all been refurbished and are nice and clean if a little small, our room looked out over the car park so the balcony view wasn't great! Bathrooms are also very clean and a good size, shower was good but water temperature was variable to say the least.

Food, as with most hotels like this is a buffet selection at breakfast and evening meal and both are average at best and being honest a bit of a disappointment, especially compared to other 4 star hotels. Breakfast is the usual cold meats, croissants etc and a selection of some hot food that doesn't really change all week. Evening meals again were pretty repetitive and usually lukewarm at best, pasta, fish, meat are all on offer but nothing really that interesting - kids fare less well with very limited choice. For lunch you can eat in the dining area or in the pool bar but we ordered a pizza and saw them take it out the freezer and cook it - not really what we expected!

Nighttime entertainment was also pretty poor with some singers on a couple of nights and the usual flamenco dancers that we the best of the bunch but the clientele (mostly pensioners on our visit) enjoyed it more than we did. There was no kids entertainment at all and very little for them to do at all if they weren't on the beach. (this may just be because we went at end of season)

Prices for drinks etc are very reasonable and certainly couldn't complain about these at €2.50 for a pint.

Overall the quality just isn't there to give it any more than 3 stars, especially as it is advertised as a 4star platinum with Thomson. The food, entertainment and lack of amenities (no indoor pool, gym etc) all count against it however the actual town of Cambrills is beautiful and certainly worth a visit - think of it as a good 3 star on a great setting and you won't be disappointed.

The Estival Centurion Playa hotel is situated right on the beach with great views of the sea. Our room was a sea view room overlooking the beach and the pool area. It was modern and light, with all the usual facilities of toiletries, hairdryer, fridge and kettle but no milk was provided with the tea and coffee and these were not replenished during our stay. A safe was available at 3 Euros per day. There was a flat screen TV but no English channels were available. Wi-Fi was available free of charge but unless you upgraded to a faster connection for 4 Euros per day the connection was painfully slow.

We stayed for one week. The towels were changed every day but and as far as we could tell, the bedding wasn’t changed or the bed even made during that period. The bear minimum cleaning was done such as emptying waste bins and removing glasses.

The food was just OK with reasonable choice but slow to be replenish when dishes ran out. The service in the restaurant and bar was good. There was some entertainment provided by the hotel three nights. There were few bars/restaurants in the area that were opened, none at all at night. It was approx. 1hour walk to the lovely resorts of either Cambrils or Salou along a flat, wide promenade, .We enjoy walking and visited one or the other town each day but for those who have difficulty getting about this may be a problem.

We took a Thomson organised trip to Barcelona which took approx. 1.5 hours away. Lots of shops, culture and atmosphere and is well worth a visit.

Overall the holiday was good but the hotel is not a 4 star and definitely NOT a Thomson Platinum class, but a good 3.
